I had a bunionectomy a few years ago and my bunion seems to be returning ,and the old bone against bone pain is re-occuring. I went to another Dr and she said the surgeon put a screw in that was to long and thats where the pain is coming from also my toe is beginning to turn again. My initial surgeon came highly recommended and was board certified so I really have no advice especially since I need an operation on my other foot also :-(

I had bunion surgery 3 weeks ago in LA, and apparently the technique he uses - triangulated bunionectomy with insertion of a surgical screw - is the way to go these days. I have minimal pain, but still swelling (I believe the swelling is gradually going down). However, I am a dancer, and want to know how long it took, approximately, for everyone to fully feel recovered. I am a dancer and need to wear heels and dance in tennis shoes - light jumping, etc. Any comments from bunionectified veterans when you could go back to normal activity?

Initially the surgery seemed to work, the bunion pain went away, and has never grown back.
But, about 10 years after the surgery I started having pain (a neuroma) on the bottom of my foot. At first it was just during extreme activities, like alpine climbing with a big pack, but now it's progressed so that after a couple of hours of shopping the bottom of my foot is in pain. I got a second opinion from another podiatrist and he said that I do not have enough bone material on the big toe side of my foot to support my weight-- and I weigh only 100 lbs.
I can function pretty well, but if I could do it over again I would never have had the surgery. There were many things I could have done- worn better shoes and exercised my foot-- that is something podiatrists don't ever recommend, but I know it makes a huge difference.

I would not have the bunion surgery. Had it in October 2006. Things are much worse. Second toe in now leaning into big toe - which has no feeling. It's been a continuous battle against blisters and burning on 2nd, 4th and 5th toes! DON'T DO IT!

I would not recommend bunion surgery unless the bunion is super uncomfortable. I had both bunions removed and now I have worse problems. My right foot feels numb on the top of the toe and hurts at the end of the day where the screw probably is. The surgery lengthened my big toes and now my right foot is bigger than my left by a 1/2 a shoe size or more. Honestly I didnt have any problems before the surgery just that I wanted it done to feel better about myself. Now im wishing I just had accepted my feet as a little different. Holla! %-)

Hey I also had bunion surgery about a month ago. I am pretty young and have had bunions my whole life. I would get so much joint pain so I suggested the surgery to my parents and since bunions only get worse over time they agreed.
I think that a major part of getting the surgery is to have a good surgeon so you should research some good ones. Also, talk to them about it. My surgeon went over everything with me. Complications and all.
When I first got the surgery I HATED not being able to walk but after 3 weeks I started hobbling around. Right now it's been about a month and a week and I can walk pretty well. Im not sure if it was a good or bad choice yet though.
I also have numbness from about half way up my foot to my big toe. Im not sure if this is how it's supposed to be or what but my Dr. seems like it okay.

There were a number of questions I should have asked prior to my bunion surgery. First, are you having a double or single osteotomy? With a single, they only break the big toe. With a double, they also break the bottom of the foot. This is selected if the bunion is severe. But I should not have allowed the double, because the complications came from the break in the ball of the foot. I was non weight bearing for five months, and I am overweight, and it was extrememly unpleasant. The pins in the ball of my foot loosened, and I lost one of them, which resulted with the bones being separated and a longer period of recovery. My foot still hurts extensively, and I have a v space between my big toe and second toe that is unattractive. I would also go to an orthopedic surgeon over a podiatrist. If you do not have to have the surgery, please don't have it. I at least was able to wear high heels and exercise prior to the surgery, which I can not do now.

It all started out eight years ago. First of all I do not recommed surgery on a bunion at all. I have had six total surgeries and have had to have three bone grafts to try to repair my foot. My last surgery was a year and ahalf ago and still do not have total healing and prob never will. I do suggest that you really look into your doctor and as a last resort make sure you go with an orthopedic surgeon because they deal with bones everyday. I had my original surgery done by a pediatrist, which in hind sight I would have never done. They do not deal with bones on a daily basis. Really think about it first because I would not want you to go thru the ordeal that I have. Good luck

hi, my mother had her first surgery from both feet 4 years ago. since then she had 3 more surgeries for each foot. she had her big toe frozed. because she is still suffering from under her foot and the scar of the surgery, we went to several doctors and none of them agree on what to do next. the risks are increasing with every surgery. we honesty dont know what to do and would never recomment bunion surgery to anyone.

Hello, I have had three operations on my bunion, the first time it went very wrong about 25 years ago, the second time they broke all of the bones acroos my foot and cut through the tendons across my foot which has left me with a weird sensation down the side and top of my foot. Over time my big toe began to collapse and lean into my second toe, I had constant sores and blisters in between the big toe and second toe, at the same time the arch of my foot then collapsed and I was literaly walking on the bone underneath my big toe and second, talk about pain or what. The secon op I just said do what ever it takes I want this bunion gone, they cut more bone off the side of my big toe, shortend the tendons in my big toe and some of the other toes, took out the small screw and put to wopping screews in. I must say my bunion still looks good now after four years my toe is dead straight in line with the others I get pain from the srews and I think it may be time again to have the srews out but we will see.

I Had surgery on my foot yesterday.....My whole foot was done...bunions, hammertoes and a taylors bunion. A screw was placed in and I am to go in in a couple days to get it out. Right after my surgery my foot was in EXTREME pain and could hardly walk out of the place. I was hoping after I slept (which was me dozing off wit the pain then waking up all night) I was hoping it stopped hurting. I instead woke up with MORe pain and a horrible burning in what feels like the surgical sites. I was and am afraid because people were walking out of the office who had just had it done and were fine. I seemed to be the only one having any kinds of pain. No matter how much I told the doctor anf the nurse there, they kind of ignored me complaints and said the anesthesia jusr wore off quicker on me than other patients and "it different for everybody." Although I can accept that explanation, this amt of pain is not normal...I mean it really really hurts and im in agony. I am being dismissed by all and no one is really listening to me as far as the level of pain im feeling. I really hope nothing is wrong or went wrong. I dont know if its infected perhaps, or if its swollen under the bandages....I found myself crawling to the bathroom because even when I slip on the surgical shoe it hurts like hell so needless to say I cant even walk with the shoe or put any pressure on ANY part of my foot. I just dont know what to think or do....im really dying. If ther is any professional that can offer some advice or anyone who experienced the same thing--please let me know..i am so scared

I HAD BUNION SURGERY ON MY LEFT FOOT ON 12-23-08. THEY SAID THAT THE ANGLE OR NUMBER BETWEEN MY BIG TOW AND MY SECOND TOE WAS A 7.7. SOMETHING LIKE THE LOWER THE NUMBER THE WORSE THE BUNION IS. AND THAT A 10 WAS MODERATE, SO THE 7.7 WAS VERY BAD. MY AIR BOOT, AIR POCKET HAD A HOE IN IT SO I WORE A BOOT THAT WAS BROKEN FOR THE WHOLE PERIOD MY FOOT WAS HEALING. THE DOCTOR DID AN INCREDIABLE JOB, BONES LINED UP PERFECT. BUT DUE TO THE BOOT, THE BONE SHIFTED UPWARD. SO NOW INSTEAD OF MY BIG TOE AND THE BALL ON MY BIG TOE TAKING THE GRUNT OF MY WALKING, THE BALL UNDER MY SECOND TOE IS TAKING IT ALL. GRANTED, I HURTS BUT NOT THAT BAD AT ALL. SO WITHIN 2 MONTHS I WAS RUNNING BACK AT THE GYM. AND JUST TO LET YOU KNOW THE SURGERY I HAD THEY CUT MY FOOT FROM THE TOP OF MY BIG TOE ALL THE WAY UP TO ABOUT AN INCH FROM MY ANCLE. AND THEY CUT THE BONE IN HALF ABOUT 2" AWAY FROM MY ANCLE AND CUT A WEDGE OUT OF IT AND PUT IN TWO SCREWS. I THINK IT WAS THE WORST BUNION SURGERY YOU COULD HAVE.

try socking it to the doctor and see if any lawyers will consider your case. I had the surgery and it went all wrong and no lawyers will even consider. This is an elected surgery and if he/she didn't deviate from normal medical practice, ie: operate on the wrong foot, cut off a toe, put your foot on backwards, or the like, you are out of luck letigiously.

Hi, I had a bunion surgery on my right foot on July of 2008, I went to this "great" doctor on the University of Miami Hospital to fix a deformation on my fourth toe, when he was doing his evaluation he told me I had bunions and that I should fix them too, I was surprised because the so called bunion that I had didn't even look like a bunion at all and it certainly never gave me any kind of problem or pain or discomfort, it was so small that only a specialist would have known it was a bunion, he recomended the bunion surgery for me, I was undecided because I was scared of an extra pain, but he insisted that later on the bunion was going to start giving me problems and it would be a wise choice of me getting rid of this future annoying pain, so I said yes to the surgery.
OH MY! How do I regret it, it's been over a year and the pain I feel is so horrible, I try to use my high heel shoes, and even though I am getting better at tolerating the pain, I can't wear my favorite shoes for more than 2 hours before the pain gets so bad that I can't walk any longer, and when I take of my shoes it's even worse.
I'm planning on going on therapy cause I can't take it any more.
Shame on the "doctors" for trying to make money out of people on ignorance, yes, ignorance, cause I didn't know as much about bunions as I do now, and how many other painless methods there are to fix a little bunion like the one I used to have, he knew too, but it was so much better for his wallet to make me go trough all this pain. So my advice is research all the other options you may have before having surgery, remember only a certain percent come out good out of this, lucky them.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do!
