Hi I'm new to this post. I am considering bunion surgery since both my left and right bunion start to hurt during the last 2 years. I have a moderate bunion that hurts whenever i wear close shoes and also when I'm walking bare foot or wear flip flops or sandals. I don't wear high heels too often.

I have 2 questions that I hope someone could answer..

1)I have been searching on the internet for a good (top) orthopedic surgeon that is specialized in bunion surgery in South Florida. Can anyone recognize a god surgeon in this area?

2) I'm hearing all these horrible stories but nobody actually mentions the name of the surgeon. Is there any reason for that? Is it not allowed on this site etc etc can anyone explain? I mean it would save so many other people from choosing a bad surgeon.

Thanks.

Hi I had bunion surgery to R foot on 30.07.2013, a week later saw the surgeon and ended up back in theatre the same afternoon to have the wound re-sutured. I had infection which caused it to pop open. The wound has been seeping since the initial op. I had half the stitches removed on 21.08.2013, because the wound is still a bit open and also very swollen and red. I most definetly regret having had this op. I have been taking progress pictures of the foot. I have now resorted to soaking the foot in coarse salt and trying not to dress it so that it keeps dry.

A progressive, holistic surgeon in California sends all his bunion patients home with arnica, a homeopathic remedy. I had surgery a week ago with with an orthopedic surgeon and also bled through the bandages so badly I had to descend three flights of stairs au derrière to have dressing changed. I got no post op instructions and finally the LA surgeon helped me, telling me to keep my foot elevated. I am extremely disappointed with his clumsy mattress stitching...my sister works in forensics and said mine are worse than autopsy sutures. and worse, he did an Akin, and put a staple in my toe....never discussed...and three screws in my foot instead of the two discussed. Plus, one screw is as long as my big toe. and of course my large toe cannot move, perhaps due to the cut of of soft tissue between my toes. Amother hideous piece of stitch work there.

To the person who asked for names.  Ask to see examples of X-rays, sutures, ask about post op care, phone numbers of other patients....my surgeon, Dr. O'Malley, did not even do the procedure we agreed on and left my foot looking hideous.

I've had two surgeries and facing third. The first two did nothing to help. During the second the doctor put in a plate and screws, all of which is ripping away and the fourth and third toes are sill seriously dislocated. Is there help, walking hurts a lot and not another doctor wants to go "fix" everything that was done wrond. Any input greatly appreciated.

My surgery went great but as you said VERY painful when the meds wear off! The problem I had was that the screws that were used backed out and were visible under the skin and painful to wear a shoe so another surgery was done to remove the screws.

I had bunion surgery on both feet and did not experience any pain. Had what is called invasive surgery, walked out recovered very quickly, but in about 2 months after the separaters were removed on my lef t foot, the big toe did not go back to its normal place. I also amexperiencing numbness and it is very, very sensative. I cannot wear hardly any type of shoes, only tennis shoes. Right foot is f ine. Dr. cannot figure out what went wrong. This Nov. will be 2 years since surgery.

Don't believe the doctor who says you'll be walking right away. I was told that- ha! Sorry to say that is not possible. I believed it too and here it is almost a year later- and I am just able to wear a sneaker for a couple hours a day. My supposed one week - not one day - off my foot became eight months ! I think many doctors just say what they think a patient wants to hear. Shane in them!

My mother had it done in April 2012. First it was lots of pain, then on the checkup doctor said she needed another surgery. She had another surgery 3 months after the first one. Then her side of the foot opened and she could see the screws and bone. So they did another surgery after 3 months. She couldn't walk.she was in lots of pain. After few months it opened again. They suggested phisical therapy and another surgery. I told her to call a lawyer but she is the old date.... For her it's impossible to sue doctor. She gained 20 lbs because she cannot walk. She is 65 and it added another 10 years to her. Over the last year i saw her literally losing mobility. I have the same problem but I have been using wide sports shoes for last 20 years. It only gets worse when there is a pressure on the bone. I'm sure by now you are done with surgery but for those who consider it make sure that you are in perfect health before you start messing with the bones. Choose the best doctor and get phisical therapy right away.

OMG! Has anyone had a positive outcome? I'm having work done because my bunions are very severe and getting extremely worse. My big toes lay underneath the other toes. I walk on my big toes ( not messing around here. Something has got to be better then what they are like now. I can hardley walk) I sure can't work with them this way. I'm unable to work a full week and my job places me on my feet.  I'm 56 and have had problems since I was in my tweens. This is crazy! Please tell me that this procedure has worked for someone. I'll be having bone removed with plate and screws. I'm so confused and frustrated now cause I was so looking forward to finally getting something done AND getting out of poverty without having to go on disability. If these procedures have such an overwhelming negative outcome, why are they done at all? Please don't tell me it's so I can pay for these Drs. children to get a college education.

I too am very surprised by the negative outcomes mentioned on this blog and another one I visited in the UK. I had a double osteotomy on November 5, 2013 and I was walking on the heel boot the very next day, yet limited. This maybe due to the Ludloff plate used to fuse my bones together. It provides better stability than screws. My doctor designed and patented it because he didn't want his patients laying immobile which cause muscle atrophy.. At my first post-op, I was given a driving boot and I'm currently in PT for 8 sessions. I am pleased with the entire process and may consider it for my left foot.

Lucky you! I had bunion surgery on March 20, 2014.... My foot is STILL swollen ... The bottom of my foot is swollen as well...and for some reason .. My big toe although swollen is sticking up and I cannot plant it firmly on the ground :(... As per my doctors orders... Buy new balance sneakers 1/2 to 1 size larger.... Start walking on my foot as of last week... So scar tissue won't set... Finally got my shoe in the sneaker today... Went to doctor for therapy ... Got x ray done..... Unfortunetly... The bone that she broke to align has shifted ...:(. And now.... Let more complications begin!
