There's a great Doctor in Northern Virginia who heads the Foot and Ankle Center. His name is Steven Neufeld. Worth a visit...nowadays advances in the surgery allow you weight bear in as little as 3 days - 2 days for me. Procedures are changing all the time. Don't give up if you are suffering; it is only a matter of finding a competent Doctor.

i had bunion surgury from one of the top doctors in the country in Los Angeles.
I have now had a second surgury and am told I need a third. I'm still in a boot one year later and it is very painful to walk. Think twice before you have bunion surgury. I did a lot of research beforehand and it still did not turn out successfully

I had both feet operated on 2 tears ago. wo screws were put in each foot to hold the bones in their correct place. Due to increasing pain from the screws they were removed 1 year ago. The surgeon got the angle wrong on the left foot and so I am walking on the two small bones under the big toe. This is very painful and holes soon appear in all my footwear under the big toe - about the size of a small marble. I am unwilling to have an operation that requires a triangular piece of bone being removed from my foot to correct the angle as I am very fearful of more magor errors.
I would have the operation done but in your last consultation state that you are concerned about an incorrect angle. If the surgeon is given about of a reminder of what can go wrong he may pay greater attention to his job.

My podiatrist severed my EHL tendon during my bunionectomy. He chose not to tell me and let me think that having a big toe stabbing into the ground was a temporary side effect of bunion surgery. The two ends of the tendon are separated by about an inch. In addition, my big toe is extremely stiff and has less movement than the toe on the other foot. Don't know why at this point.

I had the same bunnion surgery 2 months ago. YES it does hurt LIKE HELL. It was worse than the labor pain. I would not recomend it at all. Mine was done at Kaiser in Santa Clara and the bunnion came back. The doctor said that I need another surgery! So all that PAIN for nothing. :(
the crutches suck 100% if you will have a surgery, consider getting before one of the knee scooters and a handicap shower chair.
The best part of all is the 2 months off work with pay and the temporary handicap plate good for 4 months :)

Hi my name is Jayne. i had a bunion removal and toe straightening three years ago. I was told by my surgeon that the operation would be a sucess and i would live a fulfilling life after my op. I had a full time job and was a busy mum with a young child. I did loads of exercise and did road running, maybe 20 miles per week. After the op i was in excruciating pain and had to use crutches for about 32 weeks. I have no feeling in my foot, it feels as if it is dead, it doesn't feel like my foot, i can't walk properly and i will never run again, i had to give up my job as i couldn't stand on my foot all day, the pain is unbearable and i can't wear heels anymore as i have a titanium pin and screws in my foot.I have severe cramps in my foot everyday and walking gets so painful. The surgeon won't take responsibility for the surgery going wrong. My life has been ruined because of the op and wish i had never had it done. The whole situation has led me to be severely depressed and has affected my social life and my own well being. The NHS has now closed ranks and keep passing the buck onto me. The surgeon has been a professional surgeon for 30yrs and has a reputable name in his profession but he isn't GOD and he should admit he has made a mistake. Good luck with whatever you decide to do .

I have had bunion surgery on both feet. I have had to have follow up surgery on both. I developed RSD on both. Make sure you have a surgeon with a good reputation. Do everything they tell you to do. It is extremely painful because they have to surgically break your bones. I had to take pain meds every 3 hours because 4 hours was too long to wait. The last surgery I had the anaesthesiologist implanted a nerve block type of bag that lasted about 4 days. It helped immensely along with the pain meds. I will definitely ask for one of those things again should I ever have to have another foot surgery. Good luck. The worst pain is over in about 6 days.

The knee scooter saved my sanity and health. I could not use crutches (no matter how much I practiced before surgery) when I could not bear weight on my foot for 5 weeks after surgery. Please rent or purchase it and the shower chair.

I had bunion surgery one year ago and will never be the same. I would not recommend it to anyone unless they have a mild case. Mine was advanced. I have metal hardware in my left foot and often feel it poking into my skin. Getting comfortable shoes is hard as a result. Even my formerly comfortable clogs now hurt because they press on the center of my foot, causing intense pain where the hardware pokes into my foot. I did gait therapy when my doctor suggested it and I have continued the exercises to strengthen my foot but I have developed a stiff big toe even with daily exercises and my entire foot is less flexible. I was out of work for about 6 weeks, lost wages, incurred high bills, and experienced huge inconvenience. When I finally got a walking boot, it gave me such a limp that my right knee joint rapidly degraded and eroded so much that my only option is to face knee replacement. I regret waiting so long to have the surgery, but wish I'd had a clearer picture beforehand of what would happen. My mobility is permanently and negatively affected because my left foot and my right knee make walking uncertain and painful. My attempt to reduce a painful bunion has created additional problems. I warn anyone with an advanced bunion to avoid surgery.

My heart goes out to you. I wish I had not waited until my bunion was so bad. I am worried that my left foot will always be a size larger than my right foot. As I write this reply I am experiencing "zingers" like crazy. I also wish my podiatrist had gone into more detail about the surgery and the negatives such as possible swelling for a year or more. I will keep you in my prayers.
