After driving my '78 Chrysler New Yorker for more years than most people keep a car I had to get something else last year. I found an '05 Ford CVPI that had been part of my home town's police fleet. The front tires were badly worn but when I opened the trunk I found two new tires. I just had them installed and today I measured the tread depth so I can keep checking for unusual wear.
I discovered those new tires have only about half the tread depth I expected to find on new tires. For the last 60 years of my tire buying experience I have always found them to have about 13 to 16 32nds when new. These have 7 to 8. Are the tire companies shrinking the tread on new tires like items you find on grocery store shelves? I know a 5 pound bag of sugar has recently shrunk to 4 pounds along with many other things.
Anyone else measure their tires?
