i'm 29 yoa f. I have had the mirena iud for 3 1/2 years and for 2 1/2 years have had a swollen lymph node about the size of a walnut in my neck. It really doens't restrict my breathing, and is only that large when I wake up. It is painful only when touched. I have gone to the doc about it and have taken multiple anitiotics never the less, I still have it. I was wondering if maybe the iud could be the cause of it.?

Hi,

If you had your Mirena IUD few days ago and you are experiencing enlarged lymph nodes I would say that you have an infection and that is the cause of the enlargement. Because lymph nodes tend to swell up if there is an infection in the body.

However you are having this for too long, two years is not a short period of time. If you had infection two years ago it would mean that you are constantly having one. Have you had your doctor check up your Mirena UID? Is there a possibility that you have some minor allergic reaction all this time?

There is a possibility also that you have some bacteria in your body and the body is fighting it all the time.

I had the Skyla IUD put in April 2017. And started getting swollen lymph nodes underneath my arms and and close to my breast tissue consistently (beginning June 7th). I am on antibiotics, which I've been told by my doctor would likely kill a potential virus in my body. Hoping this is a symptom of the IUD and not something worse.

Hello, here is an answer from our health expert.

Yes, an IUD (intrauterine device) can cause swollen lymph nodes in some cases. This is because the body may perceive the IUD as a foreign object and mount an immune response to it. Swollen lymph nodes are a common symptom of an immune response, as the lymph nodes help to filter out foreign substances and bacteria from the body.

However, swollen lymph nodes can also be a sign of other conditions or infections, such as urinary tract infections. If you are experiencing swollen lymph nodes after getting an IUD, it is important to speak with a doctor to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment, if necessary.

Here are a few potential treatments for swollen lymph nodes from an IUD:

* Anti-inflammatory medications: Over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help to reduce pain and inflammation associated with swollen lymph nodes.

* Warm compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area can help to reduce swelling and discomfort.

* Antibiotics: If the swollen lymph nodes are caused by an infection, such as a sexually transmitted infection or urinary tract infection, antibiotics may be necessary to clear the infection.

* Removal of the IUD: In some cases, if the swollen lymph nodes are persistent or severe, removal of the IUD may be necessary.

Oh wow! I am the same age and I've had it for the same time and I've also experienced this. I got it removed and I'm not joking when I say that my body immediately felt different and the thing in my throat is also changing and getting smaller.

Hi I just had my IUD removed two days ago. Had it for 1 year but constantly had swollen lymph node in armpit. Drs didnt really take me seriously but have removed IUD as I really think this is what is causing the discomfort. Out of interest how long did it take for you to start to feel an improvement with your lymph node?

I had my Mirena IUD removed January 5th and I had experienced a swollen lymph node near my left bicep for years, not really sure how long (also been using Mirena for about the last 12 years). Dr’s never had an explanation for it, it only hurt when pressure was directly applied to it. I would always notice it while carrying my paddle board. I just realized today January 24 that it is no longer swollen or sore to the touch. I really think it may have been the IUD that was causing it to be swollen. I have also noticed that I no longer gag when I brush my tongue with my toothbrush anymore, I think it was the hormones that were making that worse too because I literally could not brush my tongue while I was pregnant, now that it is gone I have no more issues with it.
