My little cousin has meningitis. He has good treatment and I hope he will be fine soon. But I remember something. I heard once that cloramphenicol can be used to treat meningitis. I was surprised. Is it truth? Can meningitis be treated with cloramphenicol? Anybody who know something about it?

Recently I read something about it. Chloramphenicol has proven highly efficacious in the treatment of bacterial meningitis. Oily chloramphenicol is recommended as the first line treatment of meningitis in low-income countries. Only a single injection can help children with meningitis. And when somebody is allergic to penicillins and cephalosporins, chloramphenicol is a reasonable alternative.
