I had a cough lasting for 10 weeks despite antibiotics and all kinds of meds. After about a month of this violent coughing I had terrible pain in my rib and went to a med express. X Ray was clear. I still didn't get relief a month later and went to dr again. Took another X ray that was clear. Dr sent me to a pulmonologist and had clear CT but lung fx test revealed significant asthma and also began allergy shots. Ribs still very sore so had a bone scan that revealed 3 broken ribs after 4 months later!!! It's very easy to break a rib from coughing and very painful!

YES it is possible!!! I've fractured mine - diagnosed yesterday at the hospital. I too have had a cough for 4 weeks, finished antibiotics for a ches infection 4 days ago, was coughing excessively yesterday trying to clear mucus and felt something pop in my back which sent shooting pains and I could hardly move. Now on a mix of codeine and tramadol for the pain and have been told to put pressure on the area when I cough, laugh or sneeze to help to support it. If you think you've featured it, you ought to see a medical professional to get some decent pain relief! Sooo painful!
For the record, my pain is a dull pain when resting for short periods, but can't sit in the same position for long before it starts really hurting. The agonising pain is on moveing, laughing, coughing and sneezing. Hope that helps

I am 54 years old with a bad COPD EXACERBATION. I am coughing all the time. A COPD EXACERBATION is like Bronchitis and Emphysema togather. It is not a Lung infection like Pneumonia. A while ago I was coughing then I heard a pop. If I cough now it's about 8 or 9 pain wise on a 1 to 10 pain scale. I've been sick for weeks and have not turned the corner where I feel like I'm getting better. And now this. I've either cracked a rib or tore a muscle. Like I wasn't sick enough. If I don't cough it's hurts like a 2.

Thank you! Had this going on for about a week after smoking a bowl of herb, took a really nice hit and coughed my way to a pop. After that it just hurt to do any motions with my left rib cage side, especially laugh or caught, and if I sneeze, it makes it scary, like really really scary to the point I have to prevent an oncoming sneeze when the need arises. The few sneezes I had, made me roll in pain and reaggravated the area causing more tenderness to kick in. Just tried caughing hard with knees pressed against the cages, works great, thank you so much for the tip! Have to give sneezing a shot later.

If you are still extreme pain from trying to cough or sneeze, hope you've gone in for treatment to determine whether you cracked a rib. Yes, ribs heal on their own, but the greater danger is they can damage the area around the lung, which may then become infected/develop pneumonia, fill with fluid, and if you can't cough it out, well, you can essentially drown.

Xrays are really the only way to determine the extent of the damage. Broken ribs can also result in shallow breathing, so treatment consists mainly of managing the pain so you are able to breath deeply enough, so they may prescribe pain meds, oxygen, and/or deep breathing exercises, depending on severity.

When ever you need to cough, sneeze etc place a pillow over the area & hold as tight as you can this will help cushion the pain. Don't do anything strenuous to aggravate the area. Also, use ice 15 minutes on 15 minutes off. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

That made me laugh so hard it hurt! I'm practically holding my back and swallowing my sneeze to keep from hurting
