i have just got out of hospital from sever chest infection , i suffer from asthma and have had a bout of pleurisy several years ago in my right lung , i receive yearly jabs against flu and yet this year i have suffered three chest infections already and as stated this current bout resulted in me going to hospital, i discharged my self last night because i was sick to death of the nurses waking me up to give me a sleeper or meds, i needed to get home for a rest quite frankly, anyway i was rushed to hospital 3 days ago after i thought i was dying of pneumonia
fever , hot cold sweats , headaches ,confusion, delirious, could not breath, seeing stars , pulse rate going like the clappers. needless to say it i was ambulance d to hospital at 4 in the morning. even though i was coughing up dark green phlegm from the right lung amazingly my chest ex ray showed up clear, i spent the next 24 hours in the re-suss room on oxygen , nebulizer, and steroids, i was put on a intravenous drip of 3000 mg of Amoxicillin per day for 3 days, like i said i discharged myself last night and was sent home with a further 2x500 Amoxicillin 3 times a day, this morning i awoke to the ongoing coughing and bringing up phlegm , i must just say finally i feel the infection is being beaten , however during my coughing fit at 2am this morning i suddenly noticed my right lung was feeling like i have broken ribs and the blinding headaches from coughing, i also saw spots before my eyes and thought my eyes would pop out of my head. i immediately got on this forum to see if any one else has been through the pain like i have, o.m.g. i don't wish to sound nasty here but i am over joyed to find i am not on my own, good news though folks is i done some research for you and 9 times out of ten the rib agony your going through is caused by violent ongoing coughing and causing damage to the ( intercostal muscles ) around the lungs the great news is you will survive but by god you will experience pain like me and many others out there , SO ALL I CAN SAY IS GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL AND MAY YOU GET WELL SOON , OH AND DON'T WORRY ONE DAY SOON YOU WILL WAKE UP FEELING A MILLION DOLLARS

It doesn't seem right. Yes when you cough a lot your chest gets tender. It's normal.
yes but i would just say that when people think they have broken a rib its not so drastic, !!! research i have done over the NHS service on this subject repeatedly claim the pain is of ( intercostal muscles ) damage ( most likely ? ) get well soon
It goes away though. Its just temporary, that's the good thing.
i'm with you on that one as far as i am concerned it come soon enough
I don't like it when the cough is so progressed and the dry cough kicks in. That's when the chest hurts even more.
i broke a rib coughing last year and only at that point did i go to the dr and learn i had mild pneumonia. they treated the pneumonia with antibiotics but the pain from the rib fracture lasted months and months. every sneeze is like a trip to hell. i learned that if i raised my arm above my head while i sneezed, for whatever reason it didn't hurt so for 6 months every time i had to sneeze my husband would go "WEEEEE" like we were on a roller coaster lol. fast forward to this year, spring allergies are hitting early and hard and i'm feeling pain on both sides of my mid back following a sneezing fit last week. this pain is definitely not rib fracture though. much more of an ache than a sharp pain. i'm assuming even though it's not a fracture it will still take a bit to heal these sore muscles b/c i use them all day every day. what's the moral of this story? it sucks getting old (i'm 37) and it will go away but don't be surprised if just when you think it's over a random cough or sneeze comes out of nowhere and knocks you on your butt again. feel better everyone!
oh and p.s. for those of you who had 'clear' CHEST xrays, rib fractures don't always show up on chest xrays. you need either a rib xray (not the same thing) or a CT scan, that's what i had. so a dr saying to you your chest xray is clear, it's just sore muscles could be way off the mark. my chest xray was clear way before my rib fracture healed.
I feel better knowing this is fairly common. I got the flu three weeks ago, and I'm still coughing. Last week I coughed, and something popped on the back of my rib cage. Clear Xray, but it still hurts like crazy. I hope yall feel better soon.
You probably cracked a rib. I just got home from the doctors and they said I have a cracked rib. All I did was cough super hard and then a pain started around my right side rib area, and the fist day it hurt a lot to breath. But with pain medicine it is way easier to breath deeply. who should have gone to the doctors when the pain started. My doctor said it was only the 2nd time she saw someone crack a rib from coughing, but it is possible.
find a chase clinic and get some pain meds
Had bronchitis and was coughing for weeks. Started having pain on my right side for 4 weeks today. Many Dr visits one er visit. Two chest xray came clean. Dr say either bruised (3-4 weeks recv) or fractured (6-8 wks rcvy) rib. I have pain on the right side under breastbone and looks deformed a bit. odd when I breathe in and out the lung doesn't seemed inflate that well(its Freaking me out a bit). Dome shortness of breath. So the Dr is sending me for cat scan and to a pulmonolgist next. This is the worst and longest recovery ever! But its nice to know it not uncommon.
what did the doc say?
YOU CAN BREAK A RIB FROM COUGHING! I broke 2 ribs from coughing and it's terrible. Painful and really annoying.
I coughed hard all weekend and finally went to my doctor today due to terrible pain and bruised feeling in my upper left rib area. Turns out that I have bronchitis and broken ribs. Didn't know it was possible, but after the diagnosis others told me that this had had happened to them too.Learn something new every day! Thank goodness for antibiotics and Vicodin!!
Might also be pleurisy -- inflammation of the lining around the lungs. I understand this can be exercise induced. I think I have it now. It's a sharp pain in the left side of my chest (away from the heart), front and back. Muscle/rib areas in front and back are sore to touch, and it hurts like the dickens when I sneeze. I hear a "crack" once in awhile. If it doesn't go away in a few days, I'll see a doctor then. It's been slowly but surely getting better these past three days.
