I've been trying to figure out why I lose weight on steroids? Why is there no research on this? I've been taking it for a month at low doses. I'm not going to try to list the all autoimmune disorders. Lupus/Sjogrens I'm 33 yr old female. I've been trying to get proper treatment for years! Unlike others who lose weight I gained a 50lbs, but I was still considered average weight. I don't feel like it was taken seriously. I could tell the extra weight it's self was causing issues. I was terrified to take this medication. I was basically starving myself still nothing. I caved to the pain, and the rashes. It does work! To my surprise I have lost 15 lbs. I feel better too. If this many people are losing weight. I can't believe there's no answers for us. I definitely going to ask my rheumatologist what's up?

Hi,

Weight gain is a well-known side effect of steroids, so it is understandable that you are surprised to have experienced weight loss while taking them. While weight gain is a common side effect, the effects of steroids on weight can be complex and may depend on various factors, including the dose, duration of treatment, and individual factors such as age, sex, and metabolic rate.

Some studies have shown that long-term use of steroids can lead to weight gain, while others have shown weight loss in certain populations, such as patients with COPD. However, there is limited research on the specific mechanisms that lead to weight changes with steroid use, and it is possible that more research is needed to fully understand these effects.

Your rheumatologist may be able to provide more insight into the effects of steroids on weight and help determine if any other factors may be contributing to your weight loss.

In general, it is important to remember that steroids are powerful medications that can have a range of side effects, both positive and negative.
