CAUSES OF SWOLLEN LIPS

My boyfriend had a little red bump above hs upper lip. He woke up this morning and now almost his entire upper lip is so swollen. We thought it was the start of a cold sore last night so he started putting abreva on it but it didn't do anything so far. Any idea what it is or what to do? Chapstick and abreva do nothing.

i Agree, I went on a candida diet, (no carbs no sugar no alcohol or caffine and it helped a lot. I still have dry and tight and small cut on side, but it does help.

That sounds exactly like what happened to me some weeks ago..... I had everything you are describing, I tried every lip balm, corticoid cream available in the market and nothing seemed to help. After trying allergy medicines and changing different things in my diet I realized that I stopped taking my Vitamin B complex for some weeks. I spoke to my Dr. and she agreed, some times when you are lacking vitamin B you have all those troubles with your lips. After 2 weeks back to my vitamin B complex my lips went back to normal. Please consider this or ask your Doctor about it!

This is exactly the same thing that is happening to me, after finding out it was not allergies, or a vitimin problem, I took Valtrex thinking that worked. But now after about 2 months it is back, my lips swell and I have been asked if I have had injections, I cant open my mouth wide enough to eat a hamburger without cutting it into pieces. I am at my wits end. Please let me know what you find out, and what kind of Dr. do I go too? I work for a Heart and Vascular Clinic and they have done blood work and find no problems. I am miserable.

did u find a cure. i have same reactions..my lips have been bothering me for four days now irritated,itchy,a little swollen, not much and it looks like im wearing red lipstick. i thot maybe because its been cold out but no moisture seems to work.

I've never had any allergies but within three minute of getting my flu shot I noticed my lips began to swell. Now it appears that peanut butter and other nut like almonds can cause my lips to swell but not every time I eat them. Doc took me off my bp medication but that has not chance the problem. This is so weird.

My daughter is 14 and has the same issues down to stomach pains. Did you ever get anything resolved with your child? The symptoms seem to be the same for mine and no one can diagnose her. Please help

Hi, I went through a really bad experience with my lips and wanted to share my story and treatment. I am a kindergarten teacher of 27 students, so it should be known that I am exposed to weird germs and bacteria ALL the time. All winter long my lips have been very chapped, and two weeks ago I noticed a crack on the side of my lip. The crack was irritated and itchy, but I didn't think anything of it. Over the next week and a half, a yellow crust formed on the side of my lip that seemed to spread, and red bumps appeared on my upper lip, lower chin, and on the side of my face. My lips also began to be very swollen and painful, oozing yellow liquid and crusting over. I went to the doctor and he immediately diagnosed me with oral herpes (luckily, he DID take a culture). I have NEVER had a cold sore in my life and I had a hard time believing this, but I figured, hey, he's a doctor, he must know what he's talking about. He said it would clear up on its own after a few days. Well, a few days went by and my lips were swollen twice to the normal size, the red bumps were spreading, and I was in a lot of pain. I went back to another doctor who again said it was oral herpes. Finally, my test results came back and it tested NEGATIVE for herpes and chicken pox. I spent all day researching this condition (I couldn't go to work because it had become so bad) and found a picture of a person who had the same condition as me. Lip impetigo. I went to the doctor AGAIN on Friday and FINALLY got a doctor who listened to my circumstances (around little kids all the time, crowded classroom, chapped lips) and she immediately diagnosed me with impetigo. Because it had gotten to be so bad (which is frustrating, because if I had been diagnosed properly it wouldn't have spread) I had to go on an oral antibiotic and a prescription antibiotic cream. Three days later and it is fading fast (thank goodness). Before impetigo gets as severe as it was for me, you can probably put a 1 percent antibiotic cream (neosporin) on it. Hope this helps!

Yesterday all of the sudden my right eye felt strange and scratchy, within minutes my eye swelled and was completely blood shot for NO reason. Few minutes later my lower left lip swelled like I was punched in the mouth. I almost went to the emergency room, in lieu of this I put maximum strength visine in my eye, and drank a glass of wine with a friend to calm me down, as I was extremely alarmed. Incredibly, the swelling in lip and swelled blood shot eye was cleared up and normal 4 hours later, with NO explanation. I take NO medicine for anything, except aleve, aspirin, occasional benedryl, for my recent unknown outbreaks of hives every week, and for fibromyalgia.
Interestingly, I am waiting for an appointment with an encronologist to test my T3 and T4, as recently I was diagnosed with 2 calcified nodules in my thyroid. I suspect I have a potential thyroid problem. Perhaps this is associated with this unknown swelling that has NEVER happened to me before. Thanks for your post! Cathy =)

Waking up to "Octo-Mom" lips!  

Well I'm very glad to hear that this is not an isolated problem -- maybe glad isn't the word :'(  About 3 am this morning, I got home from a very long, stressful drive (with a total of 13 hours on the road) getting lost in both daylight AND night-time.  I did have a great visit wih my grand-daughter.  So when my lips felt funny upon waking up, I looked and WHOA!  The only difference throughout today was that an area of the bottom lip was more pronounced at first (was I getting Bells Palseu?)  Now they are still swollen alike, very dry and I have outbreaks of itches (not hives) on my arm, turning into red splotches.  I got and tried Benedryl and also took Aleve for the headache.  Change -- nada.

I feel like fecal matter.  I am reluctant to to to Emergency, as I already am paying on a hospital bill for minor surgery (not that you'd know it WAS minor) but I am still concerned.  I plan to wait until tomorrow but I'd sure like to hear some feedback.  I do NOT have allergies per se, but the springtime tree blooms in NC do tend to trouble me as well as others.  I had done nothing different in the area's already noted.  Flying critters and/or spider possible, though.

I've had the same symptoms and couldnt figure out what was the cause.I have the bumps around my lips where lip liner would be and red raw peeling lips.It's probably strawberrries because ive been drinking vitiman strawberry water! Never had a problem before when i drank this water but i guess thats the culprit! thanks for your post! It never crossed my mind that strawberries were the cause!

bottom lip swollen, then top lip and mostly in center of top lip, now welps over different parts of the body

check into raynaud's disease especially considering that you have a thyroid disorder

Hello! My story (current) is almost exactly the same. I had a bout of swollen/dry/peeling/itchy lips (and around mouth) 4 years ago (and it lasted about 6 months). It just came back about 3 weeks ago and I'm miserable. Did you figure out anything that helped you? Thanks, Julie
