My gorgeous son is a very successful college student and the family just found out recently! Thats how well he hid it!! In his fight to get better any suggestions on the best way to be there as support!! Clueless!! Please help!! We do have one family member who tells him that hes ruining the family! And that he will never be successful in his recovery! Please Help!!
there is always hope, i am a RN who lost everything from an opiate addiction. i took suboxone for approx 1 year, and just weaned off from it. felt like c**p for one week, now better. as a family, my best advice would be to know that it is IMPOSSIBLE to completely understand how he feels, or what he has been through. trust me, as a ER nurse, taking care of addicts for years, than becoming one myselt, I was clueless. This is something he will carry for his life, but just love him, dont smother him. He MUST go to meetings, as there is no other support like those like him. you can go to meetings too. AA, Alanon, look up on internet. You are not alone. Try to treat like this like any other disease, as it totally is. Keep negative family members away from him. Most likely they are just scared and hurt. Dont try to understand. Narcotics take over your entire life. But he can get better. Love to you all- Karen

Sindee44 i know almost exactly what you are going through. I WAS in college and was going to play division 2 basketball in college. I lost it all due to oxycontin and heroin use. I lost everything!!!! Your son sounds a lot like me i'm a 20 year old male and opiates are everywhere. I recently just cleaned my body by going cold turkey which most people cant do. but your son sounds a lot like me thats why i'm responding cuz i feel for you. my mother and family were just so ashamed of me. But your son sounds strong willed and if he this is correct i'd really try just quitting cold turkey. It's so hard but when you go to methadone and suboxine you are only addicting yourself to those meds. granted you don't have go meet drug dealers and stuff but you want him clean.

The really messed up thing is my dealer sells Heroin, oxycontins, but also methadone and suboxine for quitting which is crazy to me. You must just stay positive and let him know he has a family that cares about him. My mother locked me down for 2 weeks. took my cell phone didn't let ANY friends come over and i pray to God everyday that my mom still wanted to help. after all the stuff i put my family through.

And as for NEVER recovering thats nonsense. there is always hope. If your son is not getting withdrawal symptoms bad he is probably not a constant user. There are many signs to see if he is still using and trying to hide it which I myself did very well. I hid it from my family and girlfriend for 2 to 3 years. Black bags under your eyes, Irritability, Moodiness, itching and scrathing, lack of interest, depression, small pupils, vomiting. that's just the ones i can think of.

That's all i got for now if you ever want to ask me anything I know how hard it is but you must not get frazzled and take one day at a time. I will pray for you and your family good luck
