Hello, folks. I have been reading something about the smoking. Is it true that there are some changes in reward center of brain because of smoking? I must admit that this sounds very interesting to me. I would appreciate if anyone could tell me something more about this. Thanks in advance.

Hello. I have heard the same thing. Nicotine has an effect at the same reward pathways like other drugs such as amphetamines or cocaine. Of course, nicotine does this in lesser degree. It also interferes with dopamine metabolism. Nicotine increases its levels in brain. Dopamine is very important for feeling of pleasure. This effect is only temporary – it disappears in few minutes. That is why a smoker needs to light another cigarette. I am not sure what exact changes you had in mind in reward center of brain. I hope this helps.
