Is there something wrong with breathing through your mouth?

Nobody ever told me I had to breathe through my nose when exercising.

I think you are both pushing it too hard.

I posted a comment on this topic a couple months ago.  I had the same issue for about 2-3 years.  About a month ago the pain completely went away.  I can now push myself as hard as I want and my chest does not hurt.  Unfortunately, I am not sure what I did to make this pain go away.  As per my previous post, I had decided to be seen by a doctor.  All tests checked out just fine, however my chest still hurt.  I tried breathing through my nose a few times and it did seem to help with the pain.  The only problem is that when I exerted more energy I could not maintain breathing through my nose for an extended period of time and it was just not very comfortable.  I do not currently breathe through my nose when I run unless I get a side stitch and need some quick relief (does not happen very often).  I wish I could provide some better insight, but I really do not know what made the pain go away.  My advice is, do not give up.  I was pretty frustrated, but as long as my legs still work, I will train.  Also, if your chest does start hurting do not try to push through it, give your chest a break for a few seconds and then continue on.  Most of the time I just needed to slow way down for a few seconds till my chest stopped hurting and then I could finish the rest of my run without the pain reoccurring, or at least not to the level that it had been.  I also fairly recent started swimming and biking a lot.  Maybe this helped.  Good luck.

Hi everyone,

I am 45 years old, pro swimmer long ago, now@280 pounds 6.2 Feet tall, had no exercise what so ever for over 15 years due to line of work and off course enjoying  a lazy life to be honest with myself and you.

Started to walk/jog and finally run since 20 days ago on daily basis(3 miles), no chest pain in the beginning days but from last week as described by many others here a nagging chest pain(left side)has been disturbing my exercise for almost 10 days.

I did not go to a doctor as I feel healthy like a beast and as I am determine to lose weight and get back in shape this chest pain will not stop me from doing so....I tried a few things and finally I had a very good result today that I wanted to share with you guys, while walking down the stairs (5th floor) I started to do some basic warmup exercises and before leaving the building I did a few jumping  jacks(about 20 seconds) then walked out of the building(outside temp.32F / 0 Cel.) I didn't get the chest pain like before ....it was almost gone but I felt it like 10% of the intensity comparing to other days....so I suggest some warmups before you hit the road specially in cold temperature.

By the way I already lost 5 pounds in 20 days and hope to reach my target weight(210 pounds) before 4th of JulyXD.

Good luck to you all

Hello. My name is Amy. Im only 12, and i get the same thing. I do pe/gym in school, twice a week swimming on monday and football/soccer on thursday and saturday. I dont know if thats healthy, or if i should do more, but when i do alot of the running or going fast, i get a pain in my chest. It hurts so much, but i just carry on with my hands stretched onto my head and breathing in through my nose and out my mouth slowly to catch my breath and to sooth the pain. Sometimes it goes, but sometimes it stays.hope this helps xxx:-D

I've posted here the 9/5/11! Wow! Time does really fly by.

Anyway, I didn't try to get back to sport by then, and only got myself back on track 3 months ago, and it did work for me!

After about running 400m, the pain started to burst quickly into my chest, and I remembered the nose trick, so I paced down a little bit and started breathing through my nose, although my nose is like half blocked most of the time, and I tried to inhale by using the stomach and letting it to dilate, and the pain faded out right away. The joy of running painless was/is un-descripable indeed, and I was in so much need of feeling free to run, until my muscles can't hold me, and that's what happened exactly, I was able to run until my legs couldn't carry me for the first time in almost a decade!

I'm sticking to a running routine of once each two days, and I'm hitting the 4600m, which is great for me knowing that I have Asthma too.

Also, I found that if you try to breathe through your nose by using your chest, it's gonna be hurtful too, but if you use your stomach then you'll notice a huge difference, and what it appeared to me after some detailed introspection is that I wasn't breathing enough oxygen, so my lungs were asking for more, and by breathing through the mouth the amount of air that was getting in was pushing the lungs to expand very much that it could handle at the moment resulting in the pain, let alone that breathing through the mouth will result in drying up the lungs from the moisture found inside of it, and I have to mention that the adrenaline gets released once we start breathing through our mouths and do an effort that requires extra energy, so put all that into an equation and you get a catastrophe for some people like me.

Anyway, I'm still working by now and just thought of sharing this, and I wish good luck for everyone passing through the same thing, and my advice to you, do not let it ruin your life or put you down, get up and make the change happen no matter what, but play it wisely!

I had severe chest pain after running 60 yards t his got tighter and tighter until I had to stop. I recovered breath quickly.
Had an angiogram which revealed nothing and I was advised to run as much as I liked there was nothing wrong with my heart. However I still can't run for more than 60 yards when the pain returns so unbearable I have to stop. I have been prescribed preventative medication and statins to maintain cholestrol. I am convinced I have a respiratory problem as I too found that nose in, mouth out breathing increased the distance I could run before onset of pain. As far as my GP is concerned I have Syndrome X which means they don't know the cause

Same problem - predictable onset of chest pain/discomfort about 2 mins through the beginning of a run. With a combination of nose/mouth breathing, the pain has gone away :)

Go to the doctor and get it checked.

I am a triathlete/ironman, I train almost every day and regard myself as very fit. I have a low fat diet and have never smoked. Last week while running I had chest pains which ceased once I slowed down. Despite no problems in other training I got the pain again a few days later while running. I went to the Dr and had an ECG done. The doctor called an ambulance straight away. One of my arteries was almost completely blocked and when the heart needed more oxygen and blood pumping through it couldn't deliver. I had an angioplasty and stent put in and I'm now on medications to minimise the risk of recurrence. I'm not happy about that but it's better than the alternative.

Repeat - go to the doctor.

I am a 42 yr old male.  5'10'', 195lbs.  I run 2-3x a week about 2 miles each time.

Last 3x running, I get a sharp pain in my heart all around the 14 min mark of my run and right after I have run downhill on my route.

Pain lasts about 2 min, then goes away.  In reading the feedback from many people, I do believe it has something to do with my breathing.  But I am going to schedule an appt to see the doctor

It was likely because you were running it too hard.
