Please do update us. I started having pain in my chest and throat when I swallow yesterday, and it's got a bit worse today. It started when I was up all night Saturday night with nausea and stomach pains. Later on yesterday when I got my appetite back, I could hardly swallow food or drink because I will have a sharp pain in my mid chest for about 5-10 seconds after I swallow. I've even tried taking tiny sips of water, but the pain is the same. I plan on going to the doctor by the end of the week if this does not go away. Hopefully I will see someone update on here too!

I am 22 year old healthy, active male, and I've had the same exact pain that everyone has mentioned here -- same symptoms (can feel food/liquid go down my esophagus, burning or needle sensation, etc.). I had it three weeks ago -- I woke up one morning, and had chest pain when I swallowed food or water, and even when I burped. After it lasted three or four days, I went to a clinic and the doctor claimed that since I work out/lift weights, I must have pulled a chest muscle, and that the pressure from the food/liquids when I swallow are causing the pain from irritation on the strained muscle. I didn't agree because of the severity and oddness of the pain (have had many athletic strains, pulls, sprains to compare it to), but it went away a day or two later, so I didn't think anything of it.
Now, the pain came back a few days ago, and it is extremely difficult to eat or drink anything again. I had been working out again before the pain, but it just doesn't make sense to me that this would be the cause, but it might. If the pain persists, I am going to seek a second opinion.
I hope this helps, and hopefully someone can make sense of whatever the cause of it is, because I haven't yet.

Hmm, after reading all of your guy's posts I am starting to get a little freaked out. It seams the doctors clearly have no ideea what the cause of this could be. And when telling us it is because of a muscle stretch I think he was just trying to get rid of you, using the "take your pills and hope the pain will go away strategy".
I too have experienced cold fatigue, a ear infection a sore throat and what it seamed to be a real tough cold. After trying to take some pills, again with no water, I felt as if one was stuck in my esophagus. I fell asleep and thought the pain will go away by morning. It wasn't. IN fact the pain persists even today after 2 days. I can hardly eat and It "burns" me when i try and drink anything. I tried drinking some ginger ale and it burned even worst.
I will see what happens but I fear going to the doctor will only give me more pills to take, and again no real answers.
Thanks everyone for their honest insights.

hey sounds like they're two groups of people posting on here.
People who took a pill without water; that happen to my friend and the pill stuck to his esophogus and because of the consentration of it, it burned like a little ulcer into his throat which would cause a burning pain.
the first posters all had the kind of symtoms i'm having which is when i swallow and for a while after i swallow i get a pain in my chest that could NOT be described as burning but an aching right around my heart and a sharper pain in my mid back close to the spine. The pain is the worse with a big bite of something cold. When the pain is very strong i also feel it in my ear like one other person mentioned.
I do not get heartburn and can't remember the last time I have.
Im off to the docter in a couple days

I was vacationing in Ocean City, Md when I tried taking a pill on the beach with no water. The pill was of Tetracycline. The pain in my chest is directly after I swallow anything, including saliva. There is a brief moment in between when I swallow and when I feel the pain. Like someone had described earlier, it feels like a small bone is stuck inside my chest.
I figure that there may be many people with chest pain with different causes, so it is important to describe the exact feelings. Is anyone else suffering from the same thing?

I saw this forum as I was experiencing the same problem. I went to the hospital. What the problem is that the valve or opening at the end of you throat, top of you stomach is infected. I had some narcotic pain killers, I could take a couple of those and eat. It sucked none the less. My pain was blinging. So if you have minor discomfort, this may not be for you. Doc prescribed penicillin.

My 16-year old daughter is having the same symptoms for two days now - a pain in the middle of her chest when she swallows food or water and it hurts when she burps. I thought it might be GERD...will probably go to the doc this week if it doesn't improve.

I've been reading all of these posts due my recent experiences with chest pain and thought I'd throw in my two cents. First of all, I am not a doctor!! I am just a 31 y/o female who has been treated for similar symptoms over the past year. I first went to the doctor with the chest pain, pain upon breathing, eating, or doing anything, and pain that radiated into my back with deep breaths. I didn't think I would have GERD because I didn't have significant trouble when I would lay down. (Reflux/heartburn tend to worsen when you lay flat because of residual fluids running back into the esophagus.) However, after an ultrasound and full work up, I was diagnosed with a peptic ulcer and a reflux problem. For many months, I took Nexium regularly and responded wonderfully. (Many over the counter products are effective too. I have heard that Prilosec and Pepcid work quite well.) When I thought I was doing better, I stopped it and have now had a sudden recurrence of the chest pain. Some of the things they ruled out on me as being common explanations of chest pain in a healthy young person with no history of heart problems were back spasms, gallbladder disease, esophageal lesions, acid reflux, peptic ulcer, and mitral valve prolapse. Hopefully, this at least offers some of you some comfort that it can very possibly be something other than heart disease. Go get yourselves checked out and good luck! Be well all.

17yo male - noticed a feeling like when eating too quickly occasionally happening after taking two pills a day sometimes without water or minimum of water. When eating solid food, approximately one second after the initial swallow a very uncomfortable feeling strikes seemingly somewhere in the esophagus and lasts no longer than probably a second or two. Liquid consumption is insignificantly painful, but regardless painful versus the norm. No other notable symptoms so far. The pain of swallowing has gotten progressively worse over a period of probably 4 days. Will update if situation resolves itself.

I have the same symptoms as the first person that posted this. I am a healthy active 25 year old female and I was having trouble with my back last week and it started to go up my neck and then my right ear started to bother me.. now every time i swallow I get a sharp pain in the right side of my chest and it radiates down right below the right side of my my ribs. its a sharp pain not a burning and it lasts for about 10-20 seconds every time I swallow foods or drink. My doctor told me its all related to muscle strains and a pinched nerve in my back and gave me vicodin and a muscle relaxer... its helping my back but not the pain in my chest...

I have pain swallowing and acid reflux ( i take 2 pills a day in morning and at night) my throat is stretched and it is because the sphincter muscle at the bottom of my throat isnt opening to let food pass into my stomach. I found out I have been diagnosed with achalasia - look it up. i have been "dialated" many times now and it seems to only let me eat for about a month before i have problems again. Now they are suggestion surgery to cut the muscle so it wont ever close up on me again and make it hard to swallow.
didnt mean to scare everyone.
I had the tube ran up my nose and down my throat checking pressures and acid levels...i have had many barium swallow tests - MRIs - cat scans - xrays - went thru 3 doctors all saying same thing and now being sent to 4th one for surgery.
hope you all only have GERD the other options are a pain.
