I am an amputee on the left side, have my left femur broken in 3 places, and mulitilple surgeries on my left leg before and after the amputation in 1995. I was in the accident when I was 20 and Iam now 61. I have been treated at a Pain Clinic for going on 6 years. I have had somewhere around 30 plus surgeries. I am now on Methadone 2 10 mg tabs every 8 hours and Hydrocodone every 8 hours as needed for break through pain. I have had surgeries from my head to my feet. I also have severe Osteoperosis, and have 3 plates in my neck, and also had to have a Cyoxxectomy. Now Iam literally sufferring with pain and my pain is not being controled. I have been on disability since 2004. I wear a prosthesis on my left side. The pain is so great I ofetn cry even though Iam a man. I havealso severe Leg cramps on my leg I have left and wake up screaming in pain. I talked to my Primary Dr about this and he knows me well as I have been going to him also 6 years plus. He agrees that he doesn't see why I could not try Oxycontin to see if I can get enough reliefe to live through each day. I told him I would talk to them in two weeks at my next appointment. Do you think there is anyway they would consider letting me try Oxycotin to see if I can get any reliefe at all?  They know I have never exibited drug seeking behavior, but I cannot bear this pain anymore. I am ot only in pain at the amputation sight, but on the right side as well. The pain seems to start at the sight where I had the cyoxxectomy and goes down my leg all the way to my right foot. Also the foot feels like there are thousands of needles sticking me on the bottom of my foot, nd I can't deal with these leg cramps anymore. Could they actually change me to Oxycontin to see if I get releiefe?  Can a person go from Methadone to Oxycontin  safely?  I am definately not any kind of a drug addict, but as I said my car accident was when I was 20. Iam 61 now. I have been taking pain meds off and on my entire life and have developed such a tolerance they have no effect on me. I need some awnsers from someone who knows what I should do. I would like to at least try an Oxycontin to see what happens. I care less about getting any kind of a buzz, but I cannot stand this horrible pain much longer. I am sorry this has been so long, but I had to explain it all.

I am so sorry that you are in so much pain and your need to relieve that pain isn't being met at the moment! That is really not OK. The rules for prescribing narcotics are pretty rigorous, but it should be obvious that you are in need of pain relief!

I think you should discuss your need for pain relief with your primary care doc and make it absolutely clear how much the pain is affecting your quality of life. Ask them about the best pain killers for your needs, including oxycontin, and just say what you just told us here. Hopefully you will get the right pain medication for you very soon.
