It started after I experienced cervical spine trauma. I am physical therapist and I was taking part ir Mulligan's mobilisation courses. One guy did neck mobilisation too harsh for me. Now I have swallowing issues, my hyoid bone is clicking while swallowing and I feel constant lump in the throat, sometimes strangulation feeling and unbearable pain in my neck and under the tongue. It started 6 months ago. It ruined my life.

Anyone resolve this issue or have any info of any specialist that are familiar with this?

I began having the same problem about two weeks ago. Drank some water and ate some fruit and all of a sudden click, click, click. Obviously anxiety sunk in immediately and then I figured Google will have an answer. Google doesn't have the answer but it is slightly relieving that other people experience this.

symptoms:

1. clicking when swallowing saliva (i concentrate on swallowing all the time now). usually stops when drinking or eating bu then returns. Sometimes randomly stop fr a little but every time i swallow i think about it until it comes back .

2. Sometimes throat gets tight and feels slightly sore and uncomfortable.

what have i done so far:

1. Went to ENT: stuck scope through nose down throat checked throat and said throat is fine

2. sent me for sonogram: results were normal

Its funny how no one knows what you are talking about and they all say they never heard of this.

I started to do my own research and found that: its probably the hyoid bone either rubbing against your spine (but then you would probably feel pain) or rubbing against your thyroid cartilage.

THERE HAS TO BE A SOLUTION other than surgery which would probably involve in trimming the hyoid bone so it stops touching whatever its touching to cause a click. It came out of nowhere so its hard to believe its not fixable. Doctors just don't know about it because its rare and obviously they cant see through your skin and muscles to see exactly whats wrong.

Did anyone do a contrasted moving MRI or CT scan while experiencing the click. That should probably show whats going on.

did anyone fix the issue or receive significant relief by doing therapy?

I read that ibuprofen helps people, anyone use muscle relaxes or anything else?

PLEASE POST ALL UPDATES IF WE ALL STAY ON TOP OF THIS WE HAVE TO FIND AN ANSWER, its impossible that there isn't a reasonable explanation to this. We need to get a bunch of people experiencing the same problem and do a voluntary group study. if anyone is interested please let me know.

I recently developed a similar phenomenon to the ones that were described here. It does not hurt too bad, it only happens when I have my head in a normal postural position. When I lift my head up it does not happen, when I lie down or tilt my head down it does not happen, when I eat or drink it does happen. I am concerned about this and It has been making me anxious lately, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do/is this a passing thing/ am i serious danger, please let me know.

Hi have you got to the bottom of this? Or are you still living with it

I have it woke up with it three weeks ago

I have the clunk on the last part of the swallowing motion
All else is fine can swallow food drink with it not doing it and certain head positions it doesn't do it, no sore tgroat
If I hold gently either side of throat by adams apple it doesnt do it either
And seems better after drinking and eating

I do have post nazel drip and can feel cattargh at back there if I try shift it the clunk seems to stop so could be related

Guessing cartlidge catching on something or just tight

I have been to Dr's saw the medical Practiconer who was very thorougher
No raised glands no temp all looks fine at back of throat feel no lumps

I had to go for full profile of blood tests last Saturday so I guess they have been all clear

I have yo go back next Friday to see GP if its still there really ding fancy endoscope as I heard from people who's had it that it's not good, but guess I'll have to if that's what's required

As said by others Ibuprofen helps also taking bisodol to see if acid though I don't have symptoms at all

I'll try and post further after my Dr's visit next Friday, hopefully others will post any experience or help with this or if yours has been cured or stopped

Ok

So yesterday was a good day and hopefully it stopped, this morning throat dry still a bit but not as bad occurrences of the clunky cartlidge effecton the last part of the swallow

I have also been to see my Dr who said after examaning me that all the bloods came back fine and after telling him how it feels and what area wax in which is literally around the hyoid bone area, he was not concerned and said to leave it 2-3 more weeks as ive had a good day and it could be starting to settle down he also said try to put out of my mind an he thinks it will go away

Again I feel less worried now he's explained the symptoms of any cancers of the neck mouth throat etc and none resemble what I am experiencing
But to be proactive to go back if worsens or changes in any way to now

Hope this helps anyone reading and please keep posting your experiences and and helpful tips and cures that were found etc

My ENT said the same to bear with it on the flicking on the hyoid level and crunching sensation on thyrod cartilage level). Like you, the worse position is when I am swallowing straight. Turning my head to the right or left resolves it. I had a CT scan of the Neck and Chest and several flexible scoping in my throat from my nose area by several ENTs ( from Apr 2020 till Nov 2020). I was diagnosed with Eagle syndrome ( the styloid process is long 4.1cm on the left and 3.9 on the right, anything longer than 3 cm is considered potential problem with Eagle). The complications of surgery if it goes wrong where the surgeon accidentally cuts the nerves could permanently leave with disability. At this point I have choosen to bear with the discomfort and hope it does not worsen.

I have been shocked causing a dislocation to the thyroid cartilage's superior cornu. I am feeling like a steady light chock to my throat. I am searching if dissension of the cornu will give me a permanent solution. Checking at multiple papers, most of the petients are healed but there are no long term follow ups.
