Hello,

I went to an ENT for a "clicking when swallowing" last week. His answer was that there are many ligaments and tendons in the neck, and that calcifications can occur, especially in women of my age who may be taking calcium supplements. Also, due to the fact that I am thin (not sure what that has to do with anything) I was ready to call my gastro doctor to be scoped, but the ENT said that this is harmless. it doesn't hurt me at all, but is mildly annoying. I see a chiropracter, who does the typical neck manipulations, but these do nothing to help the problem.

It could also be from GERD or acid reflux, or even from arthritis in the upper spine/neck area.

Do you still have this issue??

I remember finding this thread when my clicking was at its worst, about eight months ago. The clicking is mostly gone by now. The direct cause is not clear, but I believe is was the result of a combination of problems. The problems I believe were:

stress
poor diet
lots of sitting down and studying, reading a book
poor bite

I was getting a degree in bioengineering and studying for the MCAT. Three years of that and living in a dorm meant stress, poor diet, and lots of looking down at a book. Poor diet and stress I believe gave me heart burn. Heart burn caused me to have inflammation (or perhaps inflammation caused me to "feel" normal reflux). The clicking seemed worse when my heart burn was bad and my throat felt a little inflamed. How I fixed my heartburn is another long, and still unfinished story.

Looking down at a book I believe exacerbated the symptoms, because it only clicked when I looked down. Looking at a computer monitor is an okay angle (in which my throat won't click), but looking down at a book is too extreme.

Finally, I believe this is the biggest factor: my bite was off. I had braces when I was in grade school. In the first two years of college, my lower jaw grew a little bit. The result was that I had an underbite. My front teeth collided before my molars touched, meaning my molars never touched, meaning I couldn't chew food (which also probably contributed to my heartburn). I adapted by eating only certain foods and using my tongue more in mixing and crushing food. I'd use my tongue by trying to crush food on the roof of my mouth. Not very effective, but it was the best thing I had. My tongue would become tired from how much I used it. The other day I saw how big of a muscle the tongue is through some medical diagram, and it occurred to me that perhaps my excessive use of the tongue caused it to get bigger, beyond what is natural.

I finally became able to receive treatment for my underbite (I had to wait several years after my jaw grew because there was a chance it would grow more). I am on only the first tray of 40 for invisalign, but already I feel the difference. The click is still there, but it happens less often, is less painful, and frankly isn't on my mind anymore (actually, right now I can't make it click no matter my neck angle. It has always been time variant like this, even at its worst).

Chances are, your cause isn't the same as what I think mine was. But hopefully what I have said can help you diagnose yourself. Like others, the doctors I told were uninterested and unhelpful when I told them my throat clicked. Hopefully I'll be more curious than them when I hopefully become a doctor (entering medical school next year).

I hope the best for you. The worst aspect about things like this is that you are certain that they will last forever, despite that often being untrue.

I had this in high school. I would simply swallow spit and I'd feel it just hit my throat. I never thought of it as "Something is wrong with my throat." But it did bother me, and I really got scared at some point that it was permanent. But I figured out how to get rid of it AND why it happened. I started noticing that if I swallowed with my chin closet to my chest, it wouldn't happen. But when I extended my neck, it came back. The reason it happened (at least to me) was because I was doing unnecessary things with my neck extended. Including swallowimg. The body knows how to heal itself if you A: Let it & B: Give it the proper tools. But this can normally fox itself. Mine did. Spend the next couple weeks to a month or so swallowing with your chin to your chest. Eventually your throat will put itself back into alignment. And all should be good. It's nothing to panic about I promise. Just give your throat a break. It'd like anything, it can only take so much, before it needs a short time out.

Lol, Surgery is not necessary. This happened to me in high school. Although it's unknown EXACTLY what it is, it can be fixed, with no surgery or pills or procedures. Just you. The reason it happened I'd because you have been swallowing with your neck extended. Our neck isn't exactly meant to do that all the time. For a month or so, just swallow with your chin to your chest. You won't feel it at all. After a month try it noreally and it should be gone.

Can definitely be damaged fighting / accidents, common and often ends up healing out of alignment, surgery is ultimate fix tho will take a lot of complaining to your gp before they'll look at this option

How can you be a college educated woman. My daughter just started doing this after two rounds of Sinus infection with antibiotics x2 and has another one. She sings and she also has rubber band man syndrome (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). You obviously do not know what you are talking about and should not comment.

(i wrote this in a different topic/ but with the same related issue :) )

Hi there. I'm new here, 28 year old male, but my "click-ing" throat is not that new :)

I have been having this problem for more than 5 months. It started with a feeling of foreign object that got a cold and i started feeling the clicking when yawning. Now, for about 1 month i started feeling clicking when swallowing nothing or sometimes water. When i eat i don't have this problem. As others from here mentioned, the clicking stops if i swallow with my head turned to right or in some other positions. Sometimes i feel a bit of pain, sometime like a sting but most of the times is just the sensation as something is pushing my neck on the right side. It's very annoying and sometimes it gets me frightened even though i've been to numerous doctors.

Some background: around 8 months ago i had a bad Vertigo ( a BPPV they said ) and from time to time i still have small vertigos but i don't think are all related to BPPV. For my sanity, i think the other vertigos i due to the stress and anxiety my neck problem is causing me. While i was treating my vertigo i got a bad cold where i almost wasn't able to speak, but got better after few days and some drops for my neck. The strange thing was i was still coughing from time to time and had my nose full. So my general dr. (sorry not english native ) gave me some antibiotics and coughing drops. Didn't really have any effect. I'm not sure if then or before i had starting to have the foreign object sensation in my throat. It was strange that i was feeling it only on my right side, and felt like that part of my neck was dry. I first gave it to anxiety, since the vertigo almost gave me some panic attacks ( i still am stressed by it from time to time ). Ah , almost forgot, after the treatment for my vertigo i started having some slight tinnitus in my right ear (the only one working in my case)

Medical history: never had anything strange/important until now. Not perfectly healthy but nothing serious. I'm keeping a somewhat balanced life ( eating somewhat healthy, doing some sports ... )

Went to multiple ENTs (around 3), Generalist, did ET ( i have some small problems but nothing serious and nothing that should give me these feelings), did head CT and MRI (for vertigo mainly), Cervical CT. I even went for some cardio tests. Nothing ... I will have in February a doppler ultrasound scan on my larynx and sub-mandibular. I'm taking in consideration doing another neck MRI/CT ...

It's really frustrating because i have no idea what's there, and no doctor can tell me what really is. Most of them threat this as not important, but it's driving me crazy. Yep, i try to reassure my self it's not life threatening but every time i feel something different/ strange i get scarred.

Later edit: Reading some of your thoughts here is somewhat less stressful for me. And it really makes me wonder if maybe there is something off with my bite. in the same period i had some "alignments" done to my teeth. I will have a talk with my dentist too :)

I suffered whiplash 3 weeks ago and I now have a click when I swallow. It occurs on the right side of my neck. Has this happened to anyone after whiplash? I have been given some posture exercises from my PT and I noticed when I do them I don't feel the click as much.
