Clicking in adams apple when swallowing

Went to the ENT and was told that this is NOT cancer and is nothing to worry about. I do sleep in strange positions and lately have been sleeping in a recliner often (past 3 years or more) and my head always leans to one side. I feel this is what caused this and the doc agreed. He stuck a spaghetti camera through my nose and looked in there and said everything looks good. Also checked my voice box while I made different tones and all was well.

Hi all that suffers from this anoying clicking feeling that comes from adams apple,Throat. I too have had this symptom for about six years,it isnt painfull and it just appears from no where,when im sitting or just moving about. I thought id look this up and Im glad im not the only one that feels this. I told members of the family and they too looked at me as though im mad . My youngest daughter who has studied the human body tells me that the feeling we feel comes from some kind of gland with trapt air bubbles,and thats what causes the clicking. She says that sometimes folk can hear a bead rattle in the head when walking or running and this also is this. Hope this may help . Im confused too.

This is crazy im a 30 year old man and one day i was practicing my singing because i sing in church at times..Then the next morning i got up swallowed normally and felt a pop or whatever like something went in my larynx then out..At first it was just annoying but later began to start getting a lil pain to it..It was like my adams apple is going in my larynx and thing back out..But when it comes back out is when it pops!( I too thought of cancer but i dont think so now) Now it does feel like it has something to do with my throat muscles because i feel fatigueness on certain parts of my throat at times when i swallow or talk..I may have slept wrong my guess is and my throat muscles are off sort of like a crook in your neck or shoulder..Im gonna try some throat excercises and icy hot or warm towels..Because these dam docs dont know wht they be talking about talking about i have laryngitis! I dont belive i do cause i can talk okay...They got me walking around whispering and ish.like im a cancer patient!..Lol its hilarious..My kids think its so funny..lol I tell you what ever happen to real diagnosis by docs..These days its all about the almighty dollar..They dont give a dam..Hell the doc barely looked at my throat! To all having this problem im gonna find my own cure..lol i say try some warm towels and lick your toungue out as far as you can for about a week..try that and get back with me..GOD bless.. yes Mj im also having the same problem ..i have clicking thing when ever i swallow salaiva ...and i can feel somthing struk next to my addams apple ..its come out like a hard bone ...and goes off sometime ...its very irritatable ...i have ear pains some times and i am feeling very tired ...and i sweat a lot ...i dont feel this when i swalloing food or any liquid ..i only feel it when i swallow my saliva ...hope u got any answers regarding this ...kinldy help if u have the answer

I have the same problem and stretches really helped me a lot to eliminate about 90% the remaining 10% are due to some habits that in neck posture that i didn't quit yet, but stretches for me are really helpful till now

if someone, like hits your adam's apple and it goes in does it aventally come back out ? my mate did it as a joke and im worried :/

I've been experiencing a similar problem.

During a long taxi ride recently I feel asleep with my head rested on the window. When I woke up It felt as if something was stuck in my throat. When feeling my throat it felt as if my adams apple had moved inward on the left hand side (almost as if it had collapsed inward a little on the left hand side?). If I moved it with my hand my left hand side of my throat would 'click'.

After a few hours it went away, but then 2 days later it came back! And now it's been with me for a while.

It's not painful, it's just very annoying! It constantly feels like something is stuck in my throat and it's making me swallow constantly. 

I was thinking if it doesn't go away again then I'd go to the doctors, but after reading some posts online it seems as if they have a hard time believing people or simply won't do anything about it! :-(

I hope there is something that can be done because this is driving me mad!!

OMG! I have the same thing! I got strep throat back in October of 2012 and after it went away i could feel like what felt like a pill was stuck in my throat behind my adams apple. That went on for a few months and then it started the "popping" "clicking" noise when I would swallow my spit. Then a little while later it started doing it while eating and drinking. It is still doing it. I went to my general doctor he ran a strep throat test, a mono test, felt around on my neck, looked down my thoat, just with his light and eyes, and did not see anything or feel anything. He said he was pretty certain that it was not cancer, which of course is what I thought I had. (ever since my dad passed away from cancer in 2008 and my mom had a heart attack in her sleep on 2009 I think i have everything now, lol) And then told me that if it got to the point where I could not swallow food to come back and he would have to send me out to have my throat scoped. I too did not have any insurance at the time but I now have coverage that will start 10-01-13. I do have TMJ and grind my teeth like mad, so maybe it is nothing and it is just something related to having that. It does make me feel a little better knowing I am not alone with this condition. I am going to go ahead and have it looked at some more once my insurance kicks in. Well I hope everyone else the best with theirs and that it will go AWAY!!!!!!!!!

I had Strep in June of this year and I am dealing with the same thing. I have had a sore throat that still hasnt gone away. Clicking when I swallow. Food gets trapped when I eat. Drainage. Its driving me mad! Been to the different doctors over 7 times. No answers! Let me know if you get any answers. Good Luck!

The click clunk sound is normal swallowing! You all have it because all humans have it, it is a symptom of the normal swallow. -Speech langauge patholoist

check out CranioSacral Therapists. the hyiod bone is the only bone in the body that is attached only with tendons and ligaments, not touching another bone or joint. when the muscles in the neck are overworked or used unevenly or traumatized the  pull can be uneven. CST can release those restrictions. call and talk with them to see if they can help. Good luck!

First off, let me say THANK YOU THANK YOU to everyone whos posted before me. It was your posts that made me really dig deep. But i THINK i have the solution! I too have the same popping issue for a few years now. Im a pro sax player, so ive had these issues for a long time. And ive seen a pattern with singers and other horn players. I think its that straining is awkward neck postions that throws this sensitive bone out of place. Through many frustrating trials and tribulations, ive come to the conclusion that its your TONGUE thats causing the clicking. Now im no doctor, but lets be real, do they REALLY know what theyre talking about? Plus i went to college with a few med students that got Cs and Ds and they STILL gave them a medical degree. So forget medicine, lets look at logic. Overworked muscles get knots, right? When your legs are sore, u need to stretch and massage the knots out. Well what muscle works more than the tongue? Now when was the last time you stretched it? How about massaged it? And the tongue is really long! Goes down into your chest! So for the past couple days, ive been stretching and massaging every angle i can possibly touch before it makes me gag. Its kinda nasty, but ive been putting 2 fingers under my tongue, and using my other hand under my chin to massage all the soft meat between my chin and throat. You would not believe how many knots i needed to workout. Especially in the area (that i could actually reach) right above the popping. Now heres the kicker. After about 4 sessions of massaging and stretching, the 2nd morning i woke up, i took a big yawn with my tongue out, and something popped right under jaw, about an inch below my left ear. This was followed by the craziest pain shooting up the side of my whole head, and down into my collarbone. But the pop felt soo good and relieving. So i stuck my tongue out and stretched as far to the right and left as i could. This caused a few more little pops that didnt hurt, but gave me much relief. Like cracking your knuckles or your back. Since the pop was in such a weird area...under my ear. I started massaging my whole jaw, my temples, and all around my ear. Knots everywhere. That loosened some things out, and when i stretched my tongue again, more little pops happened. Considering ive NEVER been able to pop my tongue, this figures as HUGE progress in my frustrations. Now this is only my 2nd day practicing this theory, but i feel so much better! The popping isnt totally gone, but now i can go a couple hours without one pop. When it starts again, i do a quick jaw massage and stick my tongue out as far as i can in each direction, and the popping goes away. So in "theory," I do believe that sleeping positions may be a serious cause of this as well. I normally sleep on my side, then turn to my stomach when my neck starts hurting. Im starting to think that sleeping on your back, with your head neck and shoulders slightly elevated might be the trick to taking pressure off the hyboid bone. Only prob with that is, how do you stop the snoring? Haha. I also believe that neck stretches, shoulder massages, and strengthening your abs (all mentioned in previous comments) have DIRECT correlations to our problem. So heres where im stuck. If any of you would like to try my theory... PLEASE email me and tell me your results. Im sure this is not the 100% total solution, but with all of us working together, im sure we can completely cure this issue on our own! Gluck my fellow pop and lockers! Hehe. Blessings.

I have the same prob but when it gets stuck it hurts to swallow hope we all get the awnsers we need I'm a Lil freaked out about it

please what are those excercises for the clicking hyoid bone?

I'm female and have had clicking swallowing issue for 10 months.  Did the barium swallow and ENT checkup with scope, had doctors listen with the stethescope.  It's postural for me, sometimes more prevalent or bothersome - although generally I sit very straight.  I have a cervical bone spur, had cervical fusion and lumbar fusion, have other ortho-issues - but no conclusive answer to this.  Thanks for suggestions I read in this blog, and at least I know I'm not alone in this.  Some doctoral student should do a study on this.
