Thank you so much for your insight, I have had that same problem for just a couple of months and decided to go to the doctor... She prescribes antibiotics treatment and really does not quite understand the problem... I am taking the necessary steps to go to an ENT but I think your version of the problem is the one. I hope you are doing wel. Let me know. Marie-Pierre

i went to see a few specialists.. the first one said i have gerd and the second one said i have allergies.
i have had a lump in my throat for about 3 months now. it started out small but has progressed slowly. did the thyroid blood work and the ct but no ultrasound.
it feels like my upper palate and vocal cord area is swollen. hard to describe other than having the choking feeling so common on here.

I have been having popping, snapping and clicking in my throat for a few months now. It is positional when my head is straight. I also have a tightness feeling in the back of my tongue all the time. I had a CT and no cancer. They did find a nodule on my thyroid but said it was unrelated. I am trying to take smaller swallows and avoid the clicking by keeping my head turned to the right when I swallow and that seems to help.

I wish there was more information. And wish some of you would post back and let us know how you are doing today. It apears to be rare. But very frustrating. :-(

I had this issue. I went to MUSC in Charleston and demanded the Head and Neck surgeon do something...he decided on removal on the mid-section and I was very aware of the procedure and wanted that done.

To the surgeons surprise, the mid portion of my hyoid bone never ossified, which means it never turned from cartilage to bone, it was a congenital disorder that he said many people are born with. Anyways, it popped right out when he opened me up, so it apparently got jarred loose at some point. He just made sure the area was clean and sewed me up. The clicking is gone now....I still have a bit of difficulty swallowing and that maybe due to the fact that the hyoid is in two and working indendently, there is a reason the midseaction of the Hyoid bone exists...to keep swallowing in sync. I have some eustachian tube disfunction(ears popping) and a tight feeling in throat....in theory I had the sistrunk procedure done before it was actually done. I am going to try swallowing excercises to see if i can get my swallowing correct, the easier my swallows are the less my ears pop so I know one is related to the other....my surgery was done just 3 months ago. I guess there is some untold rehab one has to do to correct the swallowing after this.Btw,

oh btw, CT Scans and X-Rays showed nothing. Sometimes docs just need to open you up and see what they see. Lesson I learned here too is go to a swallowing center at your states university hospital.

Hi,

I have this issue too - on my left side, had it since around March this year.

I have been to docs 3 times and ENT for a larygoscopy. The ENT doc was very confident in his assessment, stating that the upper part of my oesophagus is inflamed and this is rubbing against adjacent structures when swallowing.

I have been on PPIs to stop acid reflux (which is apparently causing the inflammation) for around 6 weeks with no real effect unfortunately, but it is potentially self-fulfilling in that the more clicking/grinding that happens, the more inflamed it gets.

There is an option for surgery to trim the offending cartilage I believe, which could be a solution. I have an ultrasound in 3 weeks also - a little worried that I was referred for that but guess it will provide more answers and hopefully negate any more serious concerns.

Hope you get sorted

What a pain the butt this is! I was sick for several weeks with a major cough, I was coughing so hard that I almost passed out... really horrible! shortly after that I started getting a clicking when I swallowed. At first my tendons and neck muscles would ache like I got punched on the right side, since a few days ago that pain is gone and now when I swallow it clicks. its not all the time, sometimes it doesnt do it when I drink or eat, but maybe I just don't notice it. Went to the ENT and she looked me over thoughly and said it was a strained throat from all that coughing... well, the cold is gone by the clicking is still here... WHAT TO DO!

I've been following this thread for some time.

I have the same problem with crunching in my Adam's apple area.  I'm 41 and it hasn't done it for 40 of my years but now the worthless ENTs tell me "everyone does it."  In my case, I don't touch it (which they insist I'm doing), I just barely move my head up and to the left and it causes this crunching.

My physical therapist also noticed that my left SCM muscle is super-inflamed and tight.  He said the omohyoid muscle may also be inflamed.  We've been working on stretches and stuff but I've noticed no change.

My ENT looked at a scan that was a year old and told me that it was not Eagle's and it was probably just stress (!).  I'm not sure if the swollen SCM could be causing a pressing on that area.

I had a clicking Adam's apple and did isometric neck exercises (with a ball) and it fixed it up. Go see a sports medicine doctor as well. They deal with football injuries to this area.
