I have recently purchased a moisturizer, hand-made by someone locally, that contains coconut oil among many other ingredients. I suffer from dry skin and I cannot tell you how much difference this moisturizer has been making to my skin. Literally, I have gone from having visible flakes on multiple areas of my face ti being so moisturized I sometimes have to remind myself to use less product. I am not disputing that coconut oil can be drying for some. Many people say so. But for me, it has made a very positive difference and I will certainly continue using this moisturizer until it no longer seems to be the right fit for my skin.

Coconut oil can be a wonderful skincare ingredient found in many commercial cosmetic products, in addition to being exactly the oil most people experiment with when they want to get into home-made skincare products. It can be a great product that really keeps the skin well hydrated and smooth for some. It's not for everyone, however, which is true for almost all skincare ingredients.

Note:

- Coconut oil can lead to extremely try skin in people who already tended towards dry skin
- Coconut oil can lead to extreme breakouts in people who already tended towards acne

I get the impression that it pretty much magnifies the natural properties of your existing skin.

A friend recently gave me a mixture she made herself, including coconut oil, shea butter, and some other things I cannot remember now. These things were meant to act as a mild sunscreen in addition to moisturizing the skin. I can tell you that the coconut and shea butter smell gorgeous and I'm definitely planning on carrying on using this. Rather than having dried out skin, this combination is working rather nicely and my skin feels and looks supple and hydrated. I don't know if coconut oil could dry some people's skin, but it doesn't dry mine anyway.

Yes, I hear you, everyone who says that coconut oil dries your skin out! Despite its fat content, coconut oil is a very light moisturizer that is absorbed so quickly into the skin that it simply does not work well for people who already have dry skin. Not on its own, anyway. It is also comedonegenic, meaning some people break out when using it, especially those who already had oily skin. That makes coconut oil a decidedly bad choice for people who either have dry skin or oily skin in most cases. I have come to prefer jojoba oil, either on its own or worked into a moisturizing cream with other ingredients. This is light, does not clog the pores, and hydrates much better.

It depends which coconut oil you buy. My first bottle worked great but I bought a new organic bottle that says refined, med heat and it dried my skin out. If it doesn't smell like coconut and it doesn't melt to a nice non- fatty oil, then throw it out, it's worthless.

I bought a bottle of coconut oil. It super dried out my skin, like a sun burn. My face swelled up. took a few weeks to get better. My face stayed very dry, and it's been over a year. Some parts of my body never healed. Still red, and peeling. I have to put Vit E cream on 3 to 4 times a day, to stop the burning and itching. I wish I knew before using it.

Also agree that coconut oil does not sufficiently hydrate my skin like other oils or lotions I've used in the past. I've been using it on my body for a month after showering and I keep noticing my legs are dry by midday. I love it for cooking just not for moisturizing.

I haven't had a great experience with coconut oil either and sounds like you should of diluted it down and tested in a spot before using it. I was sorry I didn't. It created a barrier that kept everything else from absorbing except my face there it made pimples that didn't go away soon.
It actually took quit awhile to settle my skin down and I never use it.
I discovered Almond butter and I really like it you should try it to. It feels really nice and it's not to greasy or heavy. I think it has helped with my dark circles to. I make my own face cream/ moisturizer now and I use a few other ingredients. I can use the almond butter as is and I don't have any problems so you probably wouldn't either. Oh and get some "Heal-all.
Good luck

I've seen on the internet that it works on some skin types. It just doesn't work on others. It works perfectly well for me. People with different skin types might have drier skin because of it.  I saw that coconut oil can also cause acne breakouts. :( I might not use it again for my dry skin if I start getting lots of acne. If you still have some dry skin, I do know some remedies that actually work. You can put honey on it. It works really well. I have been putting honey on my dry spots forever! It works so well! All you do is apply it and wait a few minutes. So please use honey instead of coconut oil. Good Luck. :)

Hi all
The key is to towel the oil off with a hot flannel within a few minutes of applying it. Due to the consistency of oil, it blocks the pores and therefore you can have trying of the skin or blackheads if it is left on. If you wipe it off with a flannel after a minute or so (preferably a hot flannel which also will help to open up the pores) it shouldn't dry your skin out.
I use coconut oil to remove my makeup every evening and wipe it off with a hot flannel and I never have any issues with dryness since doing it that way.
Hope this helps

I only use coconut oil as a face mask. I firstly cleanse, then use a gentle microdermabrasion and then I apply coconut oil for about half an hour. I wash my face in a creamy cleanser and then use a Coq10 moisturizer. I am 44 and I have amazing skin for my age. I do this ritual once a week but always use moisturizing cleansers and primer before makeup every day.

It does dry your skin out! I had dry skin for a little while. It was only a bit dry. I got coconut oil, and all it did is make it worse. Don't use coconut oil.
