What connection is there between TIA and hypothyroidism and/or adrenal insufficiency? I had a partial thyroidectomy October 15 2009 for multinodular goiter and technically my thyroid levels are OK, but symptomatically I have suffered from hypothyroidism and/or adrenal insufficiency for about 10 years. I had a TIA on May 28, 2009 that lasted for 2 1/2 hours: paralysis on the left arm and leg, speech slurring, cognitive disfunction then it lifted. I had another one Nov 17 2009 lasting an hour - same speech and cognitive stuff, no paralysis. Hospitalized both times with doppler studies, CT scans, blood tests - all came back OK.

I also have diabetes which is controlled by diet and bipolar disorder, which I take 60mg of paroxetine nightly.

I have a SEVERE reaction to sugar, honey and glucose - depending upon how much I ingest, I either go into a coma for several hours, faint or have a SEVERE headache for 4 days on the right side of my head which causes the right side of my face to go numb on the 3rd day of the headache;which lifts almost exactly at 4 days after ingestion of the offending stuff. (The coma would be a gulp of Coke, faint would be a small glass of fruit juice, headache would be a tablespoon of sugar in a pasta sauce or more than 2 pieces of fruit in a day.)
Any thoughts?
cheers

That is an interesting conection to make, and I don't think I'd ever heard much about it but it sounds like there definitely is one. Does anyone else have an experience similar to this?

Look, hypothyroidism is very common in patients who are diagnosed with TIA. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with hypothyroidism. In order, they suggest that hypothyroidism may represent a modifiable stroke risk factor. Now, I am really in doubt what in this case can cause an underactive thyroid, since I have heard so many negative issues about this. My good friend also has this problem and trust me, she is struggling so far to get to some really normal information. I am trying to help her as much as I can. She had one stroke and since that day she is eating healthy foods, she changed her lifestyle totally.

I have the same issues. I had my thyroid removed due to a goiter and still have systems of hypothyroidism and adrenal weakness.

i just got home from the hospital after having a TIA ,same as OP described, except the left side of my face was also paralyzed. lasted between 10 - 30 minutes (i blacked out, so not sure on time). The only thing they could find abnormal was that i am extremely hypothyroid.

I have been a hypothyroid patient for about 40 years and I had similar episodes of TIA in 2002, 2007 and recently on Jan 25th, 2013. Every time
the CT scan with and without dye, blood works, Doppler studies etc. came back normal. Now they have put me on Plavix blood thinner. I also have hypertension and cholesterol for which I am on medication.
Appreciate any solutions or advice to correct the hypothyroidism.
