My son will be 2 in June. And everytime after sex I have strong contractions. When I had my first 2 daughters I had such bad contractions after giving birth to them that they had to give me strong pain meds to get me through it. It was excruciating. Those two I had naturally. Then I had my son and my cervix refused to dialate. After two days of having my water broken they made me take pitosin. Well that was an f@$!#*& nightmare and so painful but I never experienced the contractions after birth that I did with my daughters. I also want to add I've felt more swollen in my belly after him as well. Its almost like the pitosin stopped my body from doing what it naturally would have done on its own... And now im paying for it. Almost 2 years later.

Hi Crystal P

Pitocin is nothing by Oxytocin which is given to induce contractions and labour. It is also used for women who have trouble with let-down reflex - the milk-ejection reflex when baby feeds at the breast. Below is more info for you -

Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and is secreted into the bloodstream by the posterior pituitary gland. Secretion depends on electrical activity of neurons in the hypothalamus – it is released into the blood when these cells are excited.

The two main actions of oxytocin in the body are contraction of the womb (uterus) during childbirth and lactation. Oxytocin stimulates the uterine muscles to contract and also increases production of prostaglandis which increase the contractions further.

Manufactured oxytocin is sometimes given to induce labour if it has not started naturally or it can be used to strengthen contractions to aid childbirth. In addition, manufactured oxytocin is often given to speed up delivery of the placenta and reduce the risk of heavy bleeding by contracting the uterus.

During breastfeeding, oxytocin promotes the movement of milk into the breast, allowing it to be excreted by the nipple.

More recently, oxytocin has been suggested to be an important player in social behaviour.

In the brain, oxytocin acts as a chemical messenger and has been shown to be important in human behaviours including sexual arousal, recognition, trust, anxiety and mother-infant bonding. As a result, oxytocin has been called the ‘love hormone’ or ‘cuddle chemical’. Exactly why when a baby feeds at the breast, a mother feels contractions in her uterus and vagina.

Many research projects are undertaken, looking at the role of oxytocin in addiction, brain injury, anorexia and stress amongst other topics.

Pitocin is not documented to have long lasting effects, there seems to be more of oxytocin in your system than normal. If the problem persists, please contact an endocrinologist for correct evaluation. Good luck
