They do smell don't they. I just coughed one up and thought "Damn, I've had enough of this, what is it..!!"
Now I'm worried about my breath though, can you smell your own breath when it is bad? Or as it's so close to the nasal passage can you not smell it because your used to it?

I tend to get these stones in series when fighting off a cold or flu. They also help as an early warning sign that my body may have been fighting off a bug. Sometimes I will spit them up and hour later I feel noticeably better, while other times they seem to be a precursor to getting full blown sick.
I always thought of them to be accumulated chunks of sickness my body had killed and was discarding. Like throwing a carcass from a bridge, ei; my mouth.

I would like to work mine out but it feels like they are a little farther down my throat, both when they are stuck and when i can work them up. Could this mean that i have damage to my esophagus near the adams apple or might i just have freakishly low tonsils?
