Hi! I've never used the forum before as I didn't know that I had diabetes until today! I've been having loads of problems and eventually went to see my doc who tested my water and he's told me that I've got type 2 diabetes and am gonna have to take metformin? I don’t take any other meds, I don’t have any other problems – until now, and it’s completely confused me by what I can do and can’t do, and what effect it’s gonna have on my life. If anyone can help me get my head around it I’d really appreciate it as no one else in the family has had diabetes at all.

Okay – firstly stop, and take a deep breath. When you went to the docs he will have found sugar in you wee which is why he will have diagnosed you with diabetes. It is a serious condition, but you can manage it really well by making sure that you don’t put weight on and try and do exercise. It’s never easy, especially with loads to do every day but if you can manage it, it will help.

The reason he’s told you, you need to take metformin is that it’s the best way to help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels. You need to make sure you take it as he’s told you, but to be fair it’s not that bad. You don’t have to be obvious taking it – it’s easy to be discreet, and as long as you follow what the nurses tell you, you’ll be fine. You can have a drink, exercise (cos that’s good for you!) and do everything you did before – just be sensible and make sure you keep in touch with the diabetes nurses cos they can be such a good help! Hope that helps you?
