I compete against anybody that is near me.

Fitness first and foremost.
I couldn't fathom entering races just to get a tshirt or do something good for a charity though. Therein comes the competition. Hopefully I'm age group competitive again this year.

I run because I cant stand not pushing myself every day. Off days feel like a wasted day. races are fun too becuase you really get to push yourself there.

Fitness and fun. Although races are a great way to get really motivated.

I run 90% for the fitness of it. That's how I can justify running some marathons at 4:50:35 and others at 3:52:xx and not get upset at my performance. I do always check my results whether a 5k or marathon against others in my division and age group and really get psyched when I'm in the upper third, but even in the lower third I don't get bummed out.

My idea of success in any race is if I 1) stayed out of the medical tent, and 2) still enjoy running after the race.

Now let me get back to my training plan to do 3:45:00 in the OBX Marathon. :)

It used to be competition. I used to race others.

Then, I raced myself.

Now, I don't race. I just try to run, and enjoy it.

Because I'm being chased.

Fitness. Fun. I run because I want to and because I enjoy it. But I run because I need a goal to get out there. If I didn't have a marathon coming up, I'd probably have missed more runs than I did this season. Increasing mileage seems to only be goal based.

Competition is only against my self and with the understanding of what my training has allowed me.
