I had just got out of the hospital from having my gall bladder full of stones and a few in my bile duct, also waiting for surgery but i did have a procedure done in the hospital to remove the ones in my bile duct, they put you to sleep and put a camera down your mouth and just pull/push the stones out, its a pretty safe procedure that doesnt have side effects as having your bladder removed and it has helped me a lot, you might consider at least getting that done and it only takes like 15 minutes for the procedure. the doctor who admitted me to the hospital said that having stones in the bile duct can be life threatening.

to be honest alcohol has never affected my gall stones and i've never had an attack after a night of drinking. i also asked my doctor this question and he said that there is no problem in having a drink as long as i keep it to a sensible amount

I'm having my gall bladder operation in 3 days. I have a stone, 1.8 cm blocking the duct. I also have many smaller stones, and "gravel".
I love my red wine, but I tried white wine twice, but in small amounts, recently, and I had minor attacks. I have avoided hard liquor, such as a simple Pisco Sour. I'm on a strict diet for chronic gastritis and high cholesterol. I tried some forbidden foods, but without alcohol, and I never had a gall bladder attack. I know what they are - I was taken to Emergency, "la posta" in Chile many times, until the doctors finally discovered what was wrong with me. I will have my operation, because I cannot endure any more of those severe attacks during the night. I hope my comment helps someone out there.

Hey, I'm 19.. During my pregnancy I put on 3 stone and then after my baby was born I started drinking a couple glasses of wine every few nights.. Then one night after a big chinese and a bottle of wine I had the worst pain in my life, Thought I was having an attack. I went to the hospital 4 times that night!! and the next!! They said it was excess acid, tummy ache, heartburn, or gas... Then the day after I went to my doctor n did some tests.. It showed inflammation --- Caused by alchohal!! Not the gallstones... It had been causing excess acid in my stomach.. then a couple months later an ultrasound confirmed I had them..

My mum previously had gallstones since she was 23, she had hers took out when she was 50! Her attacks were on and off but she never did anything about it.. When coming to her operation she had lost 5 stone from being left in so much pain as the gallstones had got soo big they were ripping her gallbladder to pieces.. The waiting list was just too much of a wait and she nearly died from her gallbladder bursting..

If you have gallstones.. Respect them, they are very dangerous.. Make sure you have something done about them even if its tablets to break them up..

Lots of differnt opinions on this one.
I'm waiting for my ultrasound and have experimented with my diet a lot.
Yes, fat of any type triggers me, I'm just getting over a short one this evening after having dry tune on toast with a scrape of flora; the flora margarine set it off.
I drink Cava most Firday nights and it has NEVER set me off, ever.
So, alcohol in THAT form is ok for me; but dark ales and dark beers trigger me too; so I guess they have a degree of oil/fat from the grain used in the brewing process eh?

To the guy that said he is an alcoholic; well, we know the liver and gallbladder work together and there is the possibility a stone is blocking or affecting your liver too, so that may be why the alcohol triggers you, or you may have a direct liver problem that is affecting the gallbladder so when you drink, the liver inflames, and causes a gallbladder attack.

I do not think that alcohol itself affects anyone with gallbladder problems such as stones; it's the form it takes, like the dark ales etc.

Symptoms included: back pain that felt like someone was pulling my spine through my stomach since the pain was also in my right upper abdomen. No position was comfortable. I was nauseated and vomiting.

I also get symptoms like the above quite often, and last night suffered it all night, pain also under ribs. I can't drink spirits, I have one then by the 2nd I am getting an attack. Foods set it of too, last night I had a sandwich and piece of cheesecake and I was in hell. Doc sending me for tests and ultrasound this week to see if it is gallstones. Be nice to find out so I can manage my diet better and avoid all the horrid symptoms I have been getting. I also suffer regualr pains in stomach, as well as gas and cramping after eating pasta, breads, fatty deep fried stuff, coffee, milk, takeaways etc. Still have to pin point every trigger, seems to be alot :-( On the upside for some reason so far I can still have a few beers which is a relief on a hot day and weekend. I have found I have put on weight over the past 2 years as this has got progressively worse, is that normal... I always feel bloated.

i have been diagnosed with gallstones. i thought i had the flu at first. i felt nausiated, i was throwing up everything i ate and had no appetite. my urine was a dark tea like colour and my skin started to get itchy. my eyes also started to turn yellow. i went to the emergency and 3 doctors said "hmm painless jaundice" and they did not know what was wrong with me for a long time. they did an ultrasound on me, and an MRI and finally found out that i had gallstones. i was jaundice for 8 weeks!!! i did NOT want to have the surgery and have still not had it. I did however have an attack where my back started to really hurt after i ate one night and before i knew it i was in the emerge with the nurse giving me two shots of morphine and a shot of gravol to numb the pain and numb the nausea. after the attack they gave me an ERCP which is when they stick a tube down your throat and go through your intestine and look into the bile duct. the doctor said nothing was blocking yet i was still jaundice for a few weeks after that. because i did not want to get the surgery my mom and i decided to go to a naturopathic doctor. she gave me these mixed liquid herbs which took the jaudice away within a few days to a week. she also said it would take away the stones but after being on the herbs for a month or so the stones were still there which was shown from another ultrasound. i do recommend going to see a naturopath. she helped me and alot of other people i know. surgery is not your only option. as for eating i looked online to see what to eat. obv stay away from faty foods and spicy foods. i also want to have a few drinks but im not sure how bad it is. my attack (yes i had only one) was not that bad and i have a had a few drinks and did not have an attack. back to he food basically all you can eat is fruits veggies and salmon or tuna, everyhting i found on the internet said not to eat anyhting but basically the foods i just listed with some exceptions being beans onions and cauliflower form what i can remember. goodluck!

Sounds like a lot of gallstones for the holidays..The Drs have such cute sayings like if ya live in the South, you will have gallstones..
Another...fat and 40? gallstones..

Well i was diagnosed this week too with one the size of a quarter...so i am waiting for surgery next week..
There are as many good stories as there are bad ones..
but my stepmom waited and then had an acute attack- had to have the cutting surgery, not laproscopic..and took her forever to get over it.
Not many people who have them can adjust their diet forever to avoid another episode...I am so tired of a week and a half of grits, rice, crackers, broth, and tea.
I want a STEAK and a HUGE glass of WINE!
but i will have the laproscopic surgery and return to teaching school and all will be better than the attack I hd over Christmas that came from a hotdog and french fries that made me think someone had an ax in my back and stomach and all over...

best wishes to you all!!

I have been living with gallstones for 11 years now non-stop, which is most of my life given i'm only 21. Mine are due to a hereditary blood disorder i have. My specialist was reluctant to remove my gallbadder while I was managing ok with it. I haven't had an attack in 6 years now that i've learnt to manage my diet. I've never cut out whole food groups (like dairy, spicy etc), I'm just careful to always eat those "fattier" foods in moderation. Although, when you've been living with it for as long as I  have, it just becomes a way of life and you don't think twice about not eating alot of fat. I've never been told not to drink, and i'd probably be considered a binge drinker, and i've never had any attacks that were related to drinking. So, i'm saying if you're prepared to put in the effort, read food labels and learn to manage your fat intake there's no need to have surgery - I'm living proof!

I just had my gallbladder out 3wks ago. When I still had my gallbladder I never had an attack from food. I only had what felt like pressure in my upper abdomine. But when I drank I ALWAYS got sick. My surgeon told me alcohol isn't a problem with gallstones but I knew something was different because I used to knock back the drink without hangovers or puking ever ( I don't drink often but when I do I drink a lot). So I noticed over the course of a year drinking becoming more and more of an issue til I was hospitalized for dehydration due to vomiting after only 3 drinks. So my point is after my gallbladder has been out I am back to being able to hold down liquor and beer just fine. No acid reflux no puking. And for those who are afraid of surgery. So was I big time we are talking BUG TIME. But I was quick and pretty much painless. After the surgery it only takes 3 days to feel pretty good and a week 1/2 to feel perfect. It's worth it. No more nausea. Good luck
