I have, for the past 5 months, experienced ear pain deep inside my left ear. I have also been experiencing what feels like nerve pain shooting down the left hand side of my neck. I noticed that around the same time as this happening i had a raised lymph node in my posterior triangle which was in and around 1cm in size (this later was diagnosed benign). I also discovered that in my left ear, in behind my tragus, a hard boney lump which im sure isn't normal. I would like to stress that this has all happened on just the one side, the left side. I am freaking out that something severe is going on and all the doctors are failing to diagnose what could be quite serious. The obvious worry is that i have something devastating like cancer, but just knowing that i have something, no matter how bad, is better than not knowing. Does anybody have any suggestions. Thanks peeps

Well, from what I've read, when you have a serious infection, white blood cells in nearby lymph nodes multiply in order to fight the infection which leads to lymph node enlargement. An ear infection can lead to one or more swollen lymph nodes near the ear. If it's an ear infection it can be easily treated with antibiotics. But you should follow your doctors advices. I hope you'll get better soon.

Thanks April O.

I had wondered if it was a serious infection, but my doctor gave me some antibiotics about 2 months ago for a weeks course, which if im honest, made little difference. I'm wondering if i have something more serious, the dreaded C work keeps popping into my head, I know that i shouldn't worry until i know more, but it seems that everywhere I look, cancer seems to be a possibility. I wish doctors took my worries seriously. I have an appointment with the ENT specialist on the 11th of March, but not confident in their abilities or willingness to correctly diagnose me. Do you have any advice on what questions i should ask and how best to get them to take me seriously. I really hope to walk out of there with a clearer idea of whats going on with me.

Again, thanks for your comments :-)

Yes I know, especially if you look for signs and causes on google, it's always a C***** when you type it there. Don't even think about it. I'm sorry to hear you're not confident in your doctors' abilities and willingness to help. You can always look for a second opinion elsewhere, although that means spending more money :-( I still believe it's just an infection, since those antibiotics helped. You can make a list of questions, use the Internet for it, if something specific concerns you write a question and explain what made you think so, be persistent, and stay in their office as long as it takes to get those answers. Good luck.
