I am in early pregnancy with type 1 diabetes.  What should I expect with my pregnancy?  Is there anything I need to be aware of that could be dangerous for the baby?

Under the care of a qualified obstetrician, you should be in good hands; your pregnancy will go well with minimal problems.  You will be given an insulin pump that will administer the right amount of insulin for you so that you have no need to worry about giving your shots. The baby should be just fine just so you follow your doctor's recommendations.  Many years ago, a type 1 diabetic woman could not have a baby, but now we have such advances in obstetric, antenatal, and neonatal care that the risks have been reduced significantly.  Not to say in every case nothing goes wrong, but the care and medical interventions have improved so that all babies get the best care available.

My cousin had a baby and she has juvenile diabetes. She had a bad OB doctor in the beginning so she ended up getting someone new. The old OB didn’t think she should have a baby, he was too old to be practicing any way. So she didn’t listen to him and quit going. Someone referred her to a younger doctor (female too!) in the big city 40 minutes from here and she said it was well worth the trip to go see her. There are better medical facilities there so for her needing better specialized care, it was the best thing for her to go to the big city. Just be sure you have a good doctor that listens to you and takes you seriously. That is the thing you need to be sure to do, because it is a long nine months if you to a doctor you don’t like or trust.
