I was informed by my doctor to only eat soft foods. I've stuck to chicken broth and Popsicle for the last 3 days. Did try some scrambled eggs today, but it was horrid.

soft foods, cold foods, mashed foods. NO HARD FOODS OR HOT FOODS!!! I two hemorrhages, the first caused mainly by a weak/infected scab, but i ate foods that weren't gentle too soon and that caused the scab to come of prematurely. the second hemorrhage was unrelated to foods eaten.

If you're worrying about not getting the nutrition you would get from eating normal, use protein shakes like Pediasure/Ensure, make shakes out of instant breakfast with blended fruits. the obvious jello, popsicles, frozen fruit bars. I've heard a lot about dairy products building phlegm in the back of the throat, which can make swallowing difficult, and for those with sensitive gag reflexes, it may cause you to vommit which is not good for the healing process.

Another suggestion would be to ask your doctor about grinding up a daily vitamins and mixing it with pudding, like Flintstones chewables. I also grind up my percocet pills and mix it with pudding, so as long as the vitamins have nothing harmful in it, its worth a try.

bottom line: NO HARD/HOT FOODS... believe me you dont want to have done 8 days of recovery, then hemorrhage and start all over.

I agree with toast! It's the easiest thing I've been able to eat, I had my tonsils and adenoids removed, septoplasty and endoscopic sinus surgery and yoghurt is next to impossible to eat, I had pasta with pesto and the pesto was too bitty and the pasta kept on sticking to my throat but toast goes down quite nicely and as long as you chew it properly it doesn't scratch. my only problem is that whenever I put anything in my mouth my nose bleeds which is starting to really gross me out!

I had Tonsils removed/Sinus Surgery/Adnoids on friday. That very next sunday they unpacked
my nose which was alittle painfull, after going back home I was able to peel the scabbing at the top
of my mouth which was DISGUSTING but once removed I felt much better... I Ate Macoroni and cheese
Mashed potatoes, Jello, Italian Ice And wife made me grilled cheese with tomato soup. The Tomato soup
was a little burning to get down. But all in all I think I have been fortunate to feels good so soon afterwards.

Best wishes to all, Hang in there Everyone!!!!

Its along ways from your heart, so it won't kill you.

Well, I'm glad the guy that posted above me has had such a great experience, but unfortunately what he's saying isn't true for many people.

I'm 22 years old and had my tonsils out over two weeks ago and I haven't been able to eat much of anything because the pain is so horrible. I have had to stick to mashed potatoes dowsed in gravy, popsicles, water, gatorade, applesauce, and broth soup. Two weeks later and I'm barely able to eat soup with small noodles. My throat couldn't even handle smoothies because the extreme cold burned like crazy!

You just have to find what works for you. Everybody's experience is different, but I'd definitely take it easy. Don't think "oh, that guy ate toast and was fine, so I will be to!" It just doesn't work like that.

I guess you live in the US as you are using terminology such as 'popsicles'? In the UK it seems to be standard procedure for people following tonsillectomies to be advised to eat toast following their operations to get the muscles in the throat working and remove the 'sloughing' build up which facilitates faster healing. People don't get to leave hospital until they are able to eat normally and if there are complications such as haemorrhaging people would be prone to this regardless. I was advised to gargle with Difflam ten minutes prior to eating as well as take a couple of paracetamols, eat, rinse mouth and gargle with difflam. I didn't have any problems thankfully, nor did my son who also had a tonsillectomy and followed the same advice.

Is it possible you would have had the haemorrhaging regardless of the types of food eaten as you have already said that you had an infected scab? The surgeon that did my operation explained to me that it was important for there NOT to be any scabbing, hence the toast/normal foods to remove any build up, ie keep the throat moist and it heals quicker which does actually make sense. Allow scabbing to form and that's when the problems arise. The soft/cold foods advice is an outdated mode of post-surgery care and pretty much akin to the old advice of rubbing butter on a burn.

I had my sugary two day ago. I was not aloud to leave the hospital until I could prove to the hospital staff i could eat a full meal. This included TOAST. The theory with this is that it will scrap at the scabs forming on the wound, forcing your throat to heal from the outside in, and that it keeps scabbing to a minimum, decreasing the risk of a serious post op bleed. And to be honest ice poles are good to keep the swelling down, but as far as food that help with the pain, toast is seriously great. Where as ice cream and pasta etc, get stuck toast clears the throat.

I'm having my tonsils out on Friday, and I've already been told by the doctors that I should expect to start eating most normal foods straight away.

In the UK (as in Canada and Australia I believe) we're given either toast or cornflakes to eat post op. The reasoning for it is that if you eat only soft foods then you are likely to develop a thick scarring, and this is more likely to case bleeding complications as it falls off. Rough foods are also said to speed up the recovery process.

From what I've read on similar forums people have the worst recovery when they do not hydrate enough, and when they do not move on to normal foods quickly enough. I will be sat drinking plently of water, and digging into crunchy nut cornflakes and cheese puffs while watching DVD's during my recovery.

I'm 21 and I had my tonsils removed in Canada this morning. They only recommend soft/liquid food for the first 10 days. The first day being only clear liquids without chunks or anything (broth, popsicles, ice water, but no jello). Day 2 is everything from day 1, but in addition; jello, maybe sherbet if its not too acidy, and yoghurt. Day 3-10 is oatmeal, mashed potatoes, and things of similar consistancies. They also said specifically, no TOAST, hot food, spicy food, acidy foods until the 10 days up. Possibly longer if not feeling well. Tonsillectomies are usually day surgeries, as it was in my case. I was knocked out by anesthesia at 7:55am, woke up at 9:00am, out of post-op at 9:45am, and then I left the hospital at 12:45pm.

So I believe we are supposed closely moniter and not irritate our throat where I'm from because if we do hemorrage we're already out of the hospital and would have to return (possibly not in time!)

I'm gonna try iced tea though (no sugar though) and see how that goes.

PLEASE READ! I HADE MY TONSILS OUT 2 DAYS AGO!!

I don't know whos claiming to be a nurse and saying don't eat toast but I was given toast in hospital after my op (and I was in a privet hospital). I don’t know if it’s a difference between UK and US hospitals? But I have been told to eat as normal. It is painful at first but eating proper food clears you throat and give you a lesser chance of getting an infection. I suggest taking pain relief an hour before you eat so it has time to kick in. In the morning I struggle and can barely swallow or speak but as the day goes on and I nibble when I feel hungry it some how loosens my throat and by the evening I am able to eat as I normally would with just some mild discomfort. Like I said I was eating toast the day of my op and I’m fine. If anything I’d say its better than ice-cream or softer foods as I did try eating ice-cream and porridge and it just left like it got stuck in my throat.

The only good thing I can say about ice cream is the cooling sensation sooths the throat but you could always try iced water. Hope this helps :-)

Well i'm in Australia and my nine year old had her tonsils out yesterday at a childrens hospital.  She had surgery at 9.30am and by 5pm they were feeding her toast.  They have told us to feed her as normal but push fluids an to have toast at least 2 times a day for the next week.  And she's doing really well.

I know in America they push soft foods however my doctor told me that if I could eat normally then I should. It builds up you strength and you will feel a million times better once you begin to eat again. You just need to stay away from "sharp" foods. I ate normal food from day 4 onwards except chips and pretzels and the like and I was fine. It really helped my recovery, I never took the prescription pain meds because they made me nauseous but after I started eating again I was able to go off Tylenol completely. I never had a problem with bleeding, you just need to really chew your food.
