i think its different with the UK and US. I had my tonsils out one week ago, which if you count surgery day as day 1, im on day 8. here in the UK 2 hours after my surgery i had the nurse come round with a menu and i ate a normal 2 course meal. then i had biscuits and tea at around 10pm with my meds. my dr told me to eat a normal diet. it helps clear the gunk out of your mouth and freshen it up a little. obviously be sensible! ive eaten 3 meals a day and snacked inbetween. they dont give us meds for over night here. literally take them 4 times a day from hte moment you wake up to having your last dose before bed. like i say, im day 8 and my scabs came off 2 days ago, which is probably the most painful thing as it stings, but just keep eating normally and youll be fine.

I'm 25 and had my tonsils out yesterday. Before hand the nurse told me I had to have solids and the consultant said to me that in no way whatsoever was I allowed to eat solid or scratchy foods for at least a week-soft foods only! As soon as I got home late last night I was told to try something soft-I couldn't eat half a teaspoon! It made me cry-I was not expecting pain quite like it. I have managed very soft foods today (soggy weetabix, soup and processed corned beef hash-then ice cream which was amazing!) and have been told to keep up the fluids. The hunger is something to try and deal with and watching the rest of the family eat normal food is hard but I know it will be worth it in the end!
I am also not able to talk very much for pain and was wondering if anyone is having a similar experience? Not that it's a major problem as my voice could do with a rest being a teacher!

Lastly, I haven't been told anything about any scabs falling off?!

I have found that holding in place a hot water bottle around my throat is doing me wonders. It seems to ease it and relax me especially when i'm sleeping and before and after I eat!

After a tonsillectomy, in general, foods should be easy to chew and easy to swallow. Your surgeon will give you more specific instructions after surgery which supersedes our advice. However, if you're looking to stock the fridge before the big day, here are some things you should know.

While ice cream is a great food post tonsillectomy, you should avoid dairy products if you are having nausea or vomiting (a side effect of anesthesia and narcotic pain medication). Instead, stick to clear liquids such as apple juice, soda such as Sprite, or soup broth.Avoid food and drinks high in citric acid such as tomato juice or lemonade as they can sting and cause pain.Cold food and fluids reduce swelling and pain.

As long as you're not sick to your stomach, here are some good suggestions of things to eat and drink after your surgery:

ice creampopsiclesjuicepuddingmashed potatoesjellosoft pastaapplesauce

Foods to stay away from:

chipscrackerspopcorncarrotsraw apples

This is a short list intended to help you prepare for your surgery. You will think of other foods that are acceptable after the surgery and your doctor or nurse may give you further instructions and suggestions.

I had my tonsils out 3 days ago. I'm 20 year old female. I wasnt allowed to leave the hospital until i had eaten toast and some macaroni cheese which was pure agony but they sed it's the best thing to scrape all the nasty stuff off your throat! Since then I've been eating yoghurt, potato, KFC popcorn chicken with gravy, toast, hot cross buns and biscuits! I was told to go back to normal diet as this helps the recovery! Otherwise when u do switch to hard foods ur throat will hurt even more!!

Don't give him toast the crusty part can scratch the back and cause bleeding, mushy bread that you dip into warm soup or soft non chunky pasta sauce will work for after a day or two though.

Toast is contraindicate after tonsillectomy. Strongly advise against this.

not true you probably had a different type of tonsillectomy where they leave some of the tissue behind. It's less painful but can also put you are the risk of growing another pair of tonsils. how do I know this?

Thats insane advice. The last thing he should eat is toast. Scraping your throat with toast can lead to bleeding.

I'm day 4 post op and I'm eating normal! As soon as I woke up from surgery I had to eat chips and drink coke. I've eaten toast and chicken nuggets, chips actually helps with the pain... I've also heard that the scabs cause the pain, so if you keep them off by eating hard foods, the pain decreases!

I had my tonsillectomy yesterday. My doctor told me to eat normally and even encouraged potato chips. That being said I ate nearly a whole bag of kettle cooked potato chips and water until dinner. For dinner I had lasagna and a bread stick. Tonight I ate meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I've had no bleeding and have been eating pretty great.

I just had a tonisilectomy and adenoidectomy six days ago.  I have been unable to eat almost everything.  I try broth, but even that hurts to swallow. Someone else posted that you feel worse on day 5, 6 and 7.  All I can say about that is YES IT DOES!!!  I used all my pain meds.  Took the last one last night and if I had read this sooner, I would have saved some.  Gonna try calling the Dr tomorrow to see if they will give me more, but I doubt it.
