I had my tonsils removed at 12pm yesterday. it's not 7.47pm and I've been eating solids since I came out. I've eaten sandwiches, roast pork, corn beef hash and even toast. for me personally, everything hurts the same to swallow so I may as well eat foods that'll fill me up. I was adviced by my doctor to try and eat at least one solid thing a day. I hope I'm doing the right thing.

I had a tonsillectomy and in day 13 i suffered terrible bleeding and had to go to the emergency. Was fine while i ate soft foods but as soon as i felt better around 11-13 it started bleeding right as i started eating solid foods

Are you a vagina? I had my first sandwich a hour after my op, they wouldn't let me leave hospital until I did. it helps with the healing process if you eat harder foods, although couldn't eat more than 1 small meal for the first 6 days

Note, this info by an Australian ENT specialist.

"After surgery

The first night

All tonsillectomy patients are kept in hospital overnight. This allows intravenous access for fluids, anti-nausea and vomiting medication and analgesia. Most people will be able to have dinner but some will not feel like.

Discharge from hospital

Discharge is generally mid morning the day after surgery. Before discharge however tonsillectomy patients must be tolerating a normal diet and consuming adequate fluids. I don't send anyone home until they are ready.

Diet

A normal diet post operatively is important as the passage of food keeps the tonsil beds clean. A soft diet such as soups and ice cream does not do this as effectively as meat, bread and vegetables."

I had my tonsils out today, so I'm on day one, finding it okay just very swollen, not that much pain, I was also told to eat toast at the hospital before I left, then again later on they gave me a sandwich, has this just changed since last year?

My doctor advised eating toast to remove any residues from surgery and prevent infection. I'm day 4 post op

That is very true I just had tonsillectomy and my surgeon told me the same.
I think it stops the build up of the scabs but I guess the USA does it differently(I'm from Australia) which probably takes longer to recover eating soft foods.

In the US the Dr's seem to like scabbing. They tell you to expect scabs to come off sometime in days 7-11 post op. That's when a lot of people end up in the ER with bleeding. I am from US and had to convince my Dr to allow me to follow post op food protocol from UK and Australia. I skipped the thick scabbing by eating normally, my pain was less and my healing took half the time as one of the other women my age getting the procedure done. I can't imagine sticking to soft foods that clog up your throat or living off of broth for up to a month!!
