This is a follow up to my first post after having an EMG test last week. I got the results today and I have peroneal neuropathy in my right leg. My doctor had told me at my 4 week visit that my drop foot would recover in 3-4 months. I am now in my 11th week post op and my foot and lower leg still are numb and not flexing as it should. The neurologist said it was too soon to tell and there could be a time frame of 12 months. When I asked him bottom line if my foot would return to normal he replied that he thought so. My physical therapist said it could be up to 18 months. She wants me to be fitted with an AFO orthotic which I am considering. :-( That's all the info I have. Now I am just waiting on the nerve to awaken.
Hi balhan, thanks for telling us about your condition and I think that everyone who posts here who wants to know about drop foot and the recovery from the surgery would really appreciate this. Thanks for telling us about how it's going. How is your mood? It seems like you're disappointed but you seem to be in good spirits. Is that accurate?

Hi Health Fitness Guy. In response to the above, I was disappointed when the neurologist said "it was too soon to tell" but learning about how long a nerve takes to recover I decided I should be a little more patient. At first I focused on that I would not be able to drive but I have a husband that is willing to drive me everywhere I want to go so one must count their blessings. I actually walk pretty good when I am out and about but when in the house (with no shoes on) I tend to stub my toes on the carpet and trip and it can really jar your system. I believe things happen for reasons but I just don't know what yet? I will definitely keep posting on any improvement even if it is small to all of you who are going through the same thing as myself. Keeping your spirits up is important. Thanks so much for asking.

Hi balhan! It's been almost two months since your last update. How are you feeling? I'd like to see how you're doing because you seemed a little more encouraged the last time you posted. Let me know, okay?

Hi Health Fitness Guy:

Saw my doctor on Aug.18th. (nearly five weeks ago). Again, he insists I will recover but it may be up to 12 months. My spirits are still up and probably more so because I have decided only I can do this. So I started with a foot orthotic to help me walk during the day and a nighttime orthotic to keep my foot straight at night. I have started walking around stores behind a shopping cart instead of riding in the scooters (you can become addicted to them). My foot can plantar flex really good, like pushing on the gas in a car but I still cannot dorsi flex but I can move my toes up and down which I do 24 hours a day trying to wake up the nerve. I have two months to go for my next doctor visit and I am looking forward to showing him my improvements. At that time he said there are other things we can do but let's give it a chance to recover on its own. I believe him!! BTW my hip has healed wonderfully. I can actually sleep on the side of the hip replacement. With my exercising I am getting stronger and stronger and am now being able to do simple chores around the house. So, all in all, I think I am in a pretty good place as of today. And again, I thank you so much for asking and hope to post more improvement soon.

Hi Health Fitness Guy! It's been a while since I last posted. Yikes, almost a year. And what a year it was. Last March my doctor suggested that I get an AFO to hold my foot in position and it has helped me tremendously. In May of this year my doctor dismissed me as not being able to help me any more and referred me to a neuro surgeon who told me the truth that I probably wouldn't recover from the drop foot after 12 months. It has now been 15 months. To date, my foot is still partially numb, but I see upward movement that I didn't have before. I am walking very straight with or without the orthotic and since two weeks ago I am driving my car again. One sometimes have to look at small steps of improvement than leaps and bounds. I am in a much better place today than a year ago and I am thankful for that and looking forward to further improvement. Thought you might like to know. Thank you
