This seems to be the best place for info on these. I have never had this before but I have had http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsillolith before. About two weeks ago I went to the movies and chowed down on a bunch of popcorn. The next day I noticed a sensation like I had a piece of a kernel in my throat. It wouldn't go away and still hasn't. I figured it was something on my throat or another Tonsillolith but its definitely enlarged Circumvallate Papillae. I can see them in the mirror and they piss me off! I have come down with a cold this week and have a runny nose and cough. Perhaps these bumps were a precursor to the cold...hopefully they will go away when the cold does.

I hope acidic drinks don't increase these because I've been drinking OJ like its my job. I've also tried gargling with salt water and it didn't seem to help.

As for the mouthwash idea....I tried using some to clear these guys out and it didn't seem to do anything (I used equaline...the cheap no-brand listerine).

I hope these go away soon as they irritate my throat and make me cough more.

PS I smoke wacky tobaccy every day...perhaps this could be a factor too

This is the second time I've had this happen. The first time was YEARS ago when I was having spicy food, often. It eventually went away on its own. Today was the second time, and the only change I noticed was my toothpaste. It does whitening, so I'm thinking it's that. It's the only major change. I still eat spicy food, but not as much as I was during that last time.

I hear you - I have felt that "fur ball" for about a week now and just looked last night and started to freak out! I figured I would try to research it before I fear the worst. I have a doctor's appointment for another reason in a few weeks, so I will just wait until then to bring it up. Thanks for this post - now I don't feel like such an oddball, knowing others have the same thing....

Thanks so much to everyone who posted on here, I'll sleep well tonight. Never usually try to self diagnose on the internet, but these bumps just came up today and they are driving me crazy...as i'm stealing my neighbours internet thought I'd have a quick look online - first thing I found said 'have an aids test'! very relieved indeed to find out lots of others have these things - also well done to the person who posted the links and the pictures. now I can sleep well and hope they have gone in the morning. next time i try to be a doctor to myself I'll come straight back to this site!

I've had these bumps for a couple months now. I was getting worried because like alot of you, I was thinking it was something like cancer..... I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one. And, is it just me, or do you guys get a nasty taste from this. I feel like I have morning breath all day, so needless to say I have been chewing ALOT of minty gum....

Having just discovered these nasties on my tongue led me to this forum and am relieved to find so many fellow sufferers. I had a malignant tumour removed from my right vocal chord 10 years ago and immediately suspected return of the dreaded! However there appears to be no definitive explanation of how they originate or what can be done to get rid of them. Have I missed a post from a professional offering advice on what its all about and exactly what can be done for relief? I gather from the tone of the corespondence on this subject that its just something that happens - so make the best of the situation and hope it goes away!
I note some sufferers have seen their doctors and have been content with being told the symptoms are not the early stages of the Big C. Has anyone been told how they occurred and been given successful treatment?
I'm an active 77 year old non-smoker (for past 30 years)
Regards to all.

I got this tonight and i had no clue what it was. My mom keeping a close eye on me thinking that they would spread, caused by a penut allergy. They swell up fast, my itching has gone down. As i read one of the replys as they say they have just gotten over a sinus infection. Which makes me think, maybe a sinus infection caused these red bumps to swell on the back of my tounge. Let me know if anybody else has sinus problems and has gotten this.

I have just noticed these lumps and there starting to get pianful. I've just recovered from flu like symptoms, but I don't think it was flu if you get me. I reckon its just an infection, should go down on its own.

OMG wow I am so happy to have found this. So around xmas I said to my sister I feel like I have hair growing on the back of my tongue, I haven't bothered to really look in the mirror because I'm a smoker and well I didn't want to get freaked, but I did tonight! was looking up docs, and pic of cancer, but then i found this and it describes what I have to the T. Also alot of what can cause symptoms of enlarged bumps I have had hormone imbalances and trying new homeopathic formulas, I've had bad acid reflux, and I just tried a New mouth wash within the past two months when the flare up started so..... I'll stop using that immediately! However I saw someone post not to use Hydrogen peroxide...that it causes more of a flare up/swollen, well I wish I read that before hand because that is the first thing I did was go to gargle with HP, sigh... and seems to be really bothering more like food caught in my throat. So i'll have to try out the probiotic, stuff someone mentioned.

ive had these enlarged bumps on the back of my tongue...its annoying because i feel like i need to swallow...could this be from really spicy food...i had a sandwich with jalapenos and hot peppers and it was reallyyy realllyyyy hot much hotter than i expected...it took forever after drinking 2 bottles of water for it to cool down and i felt lightheaded after...could these bumps be caused by that spicy food ?

That's kind of freaky that so many people are talking about this on the net in conjunction with Listerine use. I also have used Listerine and don't usually, but chose to "kill germs" since I have been quite sick with a sinus infection the past week and a half.
Now I don't know if the bumps on the back of my throat are because of the Listerine or the illness. I'm trying some Benadryl because it feels fuzzy back there and I have had a similar feeling due to allergic reactions before. I'll also try the probiotic supplement that I have and post back with results. Just gargled with Listerine in response to the swelling, but I guess I'll discontinue that.
Thanks for the suggestions. It looks pretty scary in the mirror. I just want to be able to swallow without it feeling like I have hair stuck in my throat!

I started to use Hydrogenperixide 3% + 50% water for mouthwash and now I too have englarged circumvallate papilla. It may be the mouthwash, not the soda. Hope this helps!

I've got enlarged papillae, a white yeast on my tongue, tiny raised "taste buds" randomly amongst the white yeast and sometimes my throat feels like there is lump. I find my gums are more sensitive to bleeding when brushing. I had a "bacterial infection" about 4 months ago on my lips that I treated with antibiotics and thats around the same time I experienced the white tongue. I'm sexually active, drink alcohol on weekends, and smoke weed (now I only vaporize) on weekends, if not slightly more frequent. About a month ago during a stressful midterm time I had a small blister on my lip that I treated with ice to suppress it. I also applied lip balm to my lips prior to the blister appearing, so it may be a gluten reaction? But I'm fine with eating gluten foods as far as I know. I thought that I may have a herpes simplex, but nothing is confirmed.

Anyone have any information for me about what I'm experiencing?
