It seems that through out the blog every one is pointing towards the cause of tongue-base swelling, but no curing.
The resultant effect of all these causes points only towards imbalance of acid/alkaline condition of our bowel.
Dear friends, I recently had the same problem of taste bud swelling at the base of my tongue (circumvillate papila).
I started taking probiotics, yogurt , even homeopathic, but none of them worked. It was during about the 4th week of trouble I
tried with a simple Antacid (DIGENE or Sucral suspension or alike) ...... the swelling started vanishing after 10 to 12 hours.

This is a common symptom between strep patients. If you have had a low grade fever around 101, sore throat, or have been coughing or sneezing you most likely have strep, which is the main cause of your enlarged circumvallate papillae. If you have had any of those symptoms I would suggest going to the doctor testing for strep and getting antibiotics after about a week on antibiotics your bumps should have gotten smaller or vanished. Also if you normally have good breath and are noticing a sort of moldy smell you probably have strep. Otherwise if you are feeling fine then these bumps are perfectly normal unless they seem to have multiplied or are enlarged, this could be caused by many thing, the most common thing I see in the office is people who come in all worried about cancer in their throats when in reality they had just burned the back of their tongue, this region of your mouth is very sensitive and is usually the cause of enlarged papillae. But be sure to go see your doctor cause this could be something a prescription is needed for. The multiplying of the larger papillae is mainly bacteria in the mouth there are several types but most are treated with antibiotics which is why you need to console a doctor. Absolutely no mouthwash or spicy food can give you enlarged papillae and any doctor who tells you this is a m***n and I would recommend consulting a new doctor. Also if you have none of these symptoms than you probably are just now noticing these bumps because they are perfectly normal.

i too have been so worried thinking i have HIV since thrush is one of the symptoms. I went to the doctor who prescribed me cloritozone for thrush..taking it 9 days, last day tomorrow and some of the white in my tounge has lessened but still white in the back of my tounge with the bumps :-( but i guess its good to know its normal..im just not sure what caused it.
I do have a yeast infections and during sex have given oral to my fiance :-( bad idea! Also i had recently been making lots of fruit /veggies juices..not sure if that also caused i:-( ugh all i know is that ive been paranoid and feeling awful, u dont know how important health is until you start feeling sick. Health is so important & so many times we take it for granted !

Do any of you have many dental fillings put in that are composites made from "Bis-GMA" ? (That means it has BPA in it!) I have the enlarged circumvallatepapillae also. They used to pop up once in a while. About a month ago, apparently I bit down too hard on an older such filling that seems to have developed microscopic fractures. (My dentist replaced it and I did get some relief.) Now the circumvallatepapillaeare are chronically inflammed, I developed chemical burns in my mouth, and my stomach clenches when I try to eat. I have had a number of these fillings put in over the last 5 years or so. My dentist concurs that it appears I have become "allergic" to my fillings! It seems that they are "off-gasssing." We are at a loss what to put in it's place.

I'm also having the same problem. But i recently had shingles and I was taking the antiviral Acyclovir 5 times a day for 10 days and that's the reason. So if you recently had a viral infection or something and have to take ABTs then that's probably the cause. I stopped drinking pop and eating acidic foods to make them better also gargling peroxide for about a minute will help the swelling go down.

equally happy i found this site, thank you steadyhealth and the people who left their message.
I just discovered the same thing and like everybody here thought the worst of it. Swollen papillae in the back of my tongue that you feel constantly pressing against your throat, especially when swallowing. Sticking out my tongue in the mirror today also made me freak out.
I'm much more relaxed now after reading your replies and am just going to sit it out, hope it'll clear away.
Thanks again, internet can be a blessing i guess.

One reason is tobacco use, either chewed or smoked...It can be worse if you smoke the new federally "Fire Safe Cigarettes"...The are made to burn slower by adding so called "speed bumps" along the cigarette paper to stop it from burning all the way down...What toxic did they add to do this??? CARPET GLUE...No, NOT joking, they added a glue that has the same chemical composition as carpet glue...
I have been noticing that since they changed the paper of cigarettes, my taste buds are constantly becoming inflamed...I can barely swallow...It comes and goes so my first thought was Oral Cancer...After researching the change in the Fire Safe Cigarette paper, and finding out the Carpet Glue addition, it made sense...And it's timing was related to the change in the paper by the Federal Government......The more often I smoked, the more swollen and sore my taste buds became...
The “swollen” taste buds on the back of your tongue may be normal. Across the back of your tongue are a few large papilla that are called circumvallate papilla.

For more information, research "Fire Safe Cigarette [[FSC]] paper change and these links...

I just noticed mine too are enlarged. I have been sick and went to the dr and was told I had a viral infection. They weren't enlarged at the time of my appointment and after reading posts on here, I am assuming it is to do with having the viral infection..I wasn't given any antibiotics as in a viral infection there really is nothing that works, so I am going to give it a couple days and if they don't go away I will make another appointment to make sure it isn't something more serious. I am glad I found this forum though, I will sleep better tonight :-D

I'm still concerned as to why my Circumvallate Papillae are swollen;
Although, I am thinking the cause may be the excessive amount of cigarettes that I smoke.
My diet has never really changed and I have not been using any special kind of mouthwash,
yet my smoking habit has increased.
Hopefully quitting will solve the issue.
It's just extremely rough to do so. : /

I too am very relieved to see pics of what I thought was some type of tongue cancer. I cried and cried for 2 days after seeing them. It feels like something is caught in the back of my throat. I was wondering how cancer could pop up so quick and how i could have multiple bumps. Thank GOD for the internet. I can rest easy tonight. I was scared to go to the Dr. because I could not bear to hear any bad news. I am so thankful for all the posts on this condition.   Thank You all for your info.......
