Thank goodness for steadyhealth!
I noticed this problem the other day, but I had a yellow coating over papilae but this afternoon after work I got my pulsar tooth brush and gave my tongue a going over after 5 minutes followed by listerine anitbacterial mouthwash it was back to its original color :D but I do have circumvallate papillae and torus mandibularis so i do believe It was caused by stress as I have been under immense stress these past 2 months, and currently am suffering from an unraleted problem called balanitis. (Bad times)
So I do agree with these posts, it can be caused by stress :) not cancer i smoke my self, but i smke maz four a day but its not all ways every day maybe 2-4 days a week at most, then on a night out with the guys. so i doubt it was cancer. but seeing a dentist next month :)
My advice, well do what i did if you have a coating on your cicumvallete that is just a temporary problem caused by bacteria. give it a good old brush followed by listerine. Hope this helps you as after i did some research it seems this is what I have.

The antacid helped but since my last post i have stopped taking antacids. I have discovered that Mountain dew which was all i ever drank, seems to be what causes this problem. Since i quit drinking it, the problem has went away. I have tried a few times to drink a mountain dew and every time the problem came back for about a day. Not sure why mountain dew has this effect on me but i am allergic to a couple other foods so that may be why. So now im drinking coke or pepsi. No Problems now. Hope this helps.

question, have you had sex? these are not related to stds. I have them and I am std free. things like stress or irritation can cause these like me I have been stressed of the past few months and have only just noticed them. if you have yellow coating on the back of your tongue it is just bacteria build up because of the enlarged circumvallate papillae or they can become irritated. the bumps are meant to be there. I am no dentist buy any means but this is what i have found out after research, my advice stay of google search it will only ad t stress and anxiety. google is useless. all it does is uses words you typed in the search bar and comes up with scary things like stds.

Thanks to all of you I can sleep easier. I thought I had some type of cancer and was searching forever. I also saw two different a doctor but to no avail I described the choking feeling the inability to swollen properly the constant clearing of throat drinking water all the time to relieve the sensations and it has caused me to have panic attacks and he told me there was nothing there.
Thanks to you all.

I have had these bumps for 4 months now. First noticed them a week after I had my teeth whitened with the gel and the blue light treatment, could be coincidental but that is the only thing I can think of that could have caused this. I have no idea what chemicals were in that gel. I've been on an acid free spice free diet for 6 weeks and eating lots of yogurt, advise from my doctor. Didn't help at all. Went to an ENT doctor today and he said it's perfectly normal. If it's perfectly normal why have I never had them before this? I have tried George's Aloe Vera juice from the health food store and it does relieve much of the dry scratchy feeling that makes it difficult to sleep at night, I was constantly awaking to sip water. Just take small sips throughout the day, it does help with the inflammation and that constant need to swallow. Maybe the probiotics will be the next thing I try, can't hurt.

Has anyone had dizzy spells since getting this? I just noticed the bumps in the back of my throat three days ago and before i saw them i would occasionally have a dizzy spell that lasted a couple minutes. So far i havent felt any itchy irritation or anything out of the ordinary in my throat. But these things are extremely unattractive and I just want to get rid of them. Also i read that they are not ocntagious so i guess thats the only good thing.

I just went to a specialist about these bumps because my regular doctor didn't know what they were. They are perfectly normal and they may appear larger in size if you've had any kind of respiratory infection, for example a sinus infection. They are called circumvallate papillae (or vallate papillae) and they are on the back of the tongue, which we normally wouldn't see when looking in our mouths. It's only when you stick your tongue way out or use a tongue depressor.
They are typically symetrical and there are usually three on each side kind of in a "V" shape & there are smaller papillae behind them in that "V". Everyone has them and they don't go away, however, they may at times get larger or smaller.
The only reason I noticed them in the first place is because I had a sore throat & was looking. What's funny is that I had never noticed them before now because I've had sore throats before. If you look it up in wikipedia, they have a very scientific explanation which is difficult to understand. Basically they are part of your taste buds. With all of that said, go look them up and make sure they are the same thing and not something else. If you have warts or something else, it would look different.
Hope this helps. I'm including links to a couple of different sites that may be able to help you. Unfortunately, I didn't have the name and none of these came up when I was researching. It's nice to know that they are nothing to worry about.

The one below has pics so you can see what I'm talking about:

Good luck & take care.

I have something like that too. Noticed them while I was sick with a sore throat. They've been there for weeks now. One looks smaller, but the other ones are still enlarged. I think it might be my allergies though. If you have allergies, maybe that's the reason. Or, your circumvallate papillae is just naturally big, or natural bumps just grew. You should be fine. Maybe try gargling warm salt water. That's what I've been doing. :) Hope I helped.

Mine popped up literally right after eating a nutrigrain greek yogurt bar. I thought I had part of the bar stuck at the back of my throat, but I looked closer a while after and it turns out to be these bumps, so I bet a food correlation is a good guess as to why they enlarge!
