Hello,

I came across this discussion by doing research online, and it intrigues me.  I have had an undiagnosed left side pain ever since birth.

I too can draw a perfect line down the middle of my body and anything to the left of that line always hurts, from head to toe.  The pain never goes away.  It is more of a dull, weakening, nauseous pain.  Any type of touch, air, light, etc. on my left side is bothersome.  And it hurts even when nothing is happening.  Pain medicine doesn't help.

I did all kinds of testing when I was 6, and nobody could find anything abnormal or diagnose it.  I am now 28 and really wanting answers.  I want to know if it's auto-immune or degenerative or if it's something neurological.  I'd like to start having kids soon, and I want to know if it's something I could pass on.  I've never heard of anyone who has had this kind of pain since birth.

I have also recently been dignosed with multi-level disc degeneration disease.  I  have several herniations in my upper cervical spine, that have added a whole new level of pain to my already exhisting pain, but I have no idea if this is even related to the problem I've had since birth.  I can't seem to find a doctor that cares to hear about my left-side pain or do anything about it.

I am not weaker on my left side, but I do have to find mental strength to use it equally. I used to be a runner (it helped take my mind off of the pain).  I was a collegiate athelete, and I continued to run after college.  But due to my spine problems, I have been told I can no longer run.  Now I do yoga as a non-impact form of exercise and release, and it helps with spine strenghtening.  I say this to point out that I have not been dibilated in any way.  But I'm finding that I am having a harder and harder time getting past the pain mentally.  It's starting to take its toll on me and I worry if it will become degnerative.

I used to think that this is just my thorn in my flesh, my cross to bear.  And I gave up.  I'm tired of being looked at like I'm crazy when I tell doctors about it.  The last time I tried to find a primary care doctor, I walked out because he mocked me and treated me like I was crazy.  Nevertheless, I have been encouraged recently to look into it again with the 20+ years of medical advances.  But I can't afford to waist my time and money on somebody who won't listen.  I don't know where to start.  With that said, do any of you have any insight/advice?  Thank you!

wow. im in exact same boat, only right side. 6yrs ago, i felt a bit dizzy sitting at my desk, a few days of this, then BAM, i had lancing pains shooting thru my skull...was holding onto walls to walk...mri normal, blood normal, etc, etc.....over the years, ive lost at vibration sensation from skull to foot, everything hurts on that side, ive developed what appears thoracic outlet, my gallbladder acts up, my leg buckles, my right side is noticeably lower...ive lost muscle in my neck....and the sensory loss is scary, and its permanent for years, it doesnt come and go...neuro says my loss of sensation doesnt fit any pattern that can be explained...so, obviously, im nuts. they refused to even send to get an EMG! ive seen several neurologists and one is worse than the next. i finally met a nice PA at PATIENT FIRST who saw the pain I was in, saw my muscles atrophied and wrote me an order for an EMG! as far as im concerned, specialists arent worth a damn. i hate them. arrogant overpaid idiots. well, i will get back to this post after my emg may 1st

Herpes Simplex, responsible for Herpes is different from Herpes Zoster, responsible for Shingles. Both HSV and VZV (Varicella Zoster Virus--responsible for chicken pox, and is the precursor to shingles) belong to the same class of viruses, but are different entities. As well, shingles follows a specific path along the nerve along which the virus travels. Most can also expect to see a rash of blisters along the nerve. You're right, though, that sufferers may experience nerve pain for weeks, months or years after shingles blisters resolve.
