So, today is exactly 3 months post HoLep surgery by Dr. Lingeman.

Overall, and without any reservation, I am quite pleased, actually amazed, with the outcome--there was no need for pads (ever). There was some blood when peeing initially and as the prostate healed there were small clots and threads-scabs- that were peed out (normal according to local urologist).

Given my many discussions with the local doctors and urologists, they regularly see alot of poor surgical outcomes through TURP and other procedures.

Indiana Univ. and Dr. Lingeman are 1st rate.

I am a 54 year old mail, I had HoLEP 8 days ago.  In the preceding 2 months I self-cathered due to bladder issues, my condition was not good.  I was/am very fit for my age group and have no other conditions.  Results for first week post surgery:

Surgery finished 4 pm Thursday, by 8.30 am Friday all conditions for exit had been met.

Ensured I took all anti-biotics, no requirement for pain killers  Small amount of pain in tip.

Excellent flow, bladder fully emptying (checked by ultrasound). Blood in urine has ceased today, day 8.

Semi-erect day 3, fully erect day 4, resolution saw large drop in fluid but still small amount released.  No loss of positive feelings. Sex will not be a problem, indeed previously associated pains have now gone so should even improve.

Only one minor issue with leakage and a few drops lost late on a few occasions, by day 4 all leakages ceased.

Resting carefully, light exercised planned from day 11.

I was very worried about sexual and incontinence issues, pleased that all concerns already negated.  Looking forward to getting on with life again after bad 21 months.

Procedure carried out by Dr Mandeville, Lahey Clinic, Burlington Massachussets

I am 60 years old and had Holium surgery when I was 59.  Before the surgery I could pee with some difficulty and had great erections.  Now 10 months later I have had to cath to pee for the last 10 months and can not get an erection, this surgery literally has ruined my life and frankly the prospect of living a long life having to stick a 16 inch plastic tube in my penis 3x daily and the prospect of no sex life is repugnent to me.  I wish I never had this surgery and I wish I would just expire and get out of the miserable life it has sentenanced me to.

46goat,

We live in India, and my father needs to get HoLEP done. Because the doctor's competence/experience with the equipment is a critical part of this I'm looking for positive feedback/referral about doctors/hospitals. Did you research any of this when you considered India? If so, can you please share what you found? Thank you.

Hi Ron: First an up date for others. I think I'm fully recovered (Just over 5 months from surgery but I was basically done needing pads about 4 weeks ago. I see the surgeon (Dr. Das) on Wednesday (in two days) and hoping for good report.

Ron: the pill he gave me (I got samples as they are expensive) was Myrbetriq (Mirabegron) 25 mg extended release for urge. I used afor about 4 weeks and didn't need any more. Seemed to help urges but still wore pads. After I saw Dr Das on 3/13 he sent me to a nurse to learn Kegel excercises. I read about them but until she used boofeedback so I could SEE that I was doing right, I didn't get relief. I did kegels for about 4 weeks. Haven't needed since then.

I feel great. Oh, as for erections, I get them (I didn't before surgery because of side effects of Flomax and Avodart.). I haven't had an active sex life (hey, it's life that is most important - at least to me - not sex at 68) so can't tell much about that. But even with a cup of decaf coffee at 8pm I get up at most ONCE a night at about 4am. Some nights not at all. This HOLEP has sure changed my life.

As for "guest" a few weeks ago I'm sorry to hear your issues. Yes, it would be good to share name of Dr. And maybe you could get a second opinion.

I'll try to report back after Wednesday.

How are you doing Just Me?

Ron. I learned there are two causes for IBS: One is a trigger food which is hard to discover. The other is mental - and can be caused by anxiety. I didn't think I had the latter BUT. I went to a psychiatrist (MD) and we tried a few things. The one that worked is Lexapro (which other folks told me about). I take one in the morning and NO more IBS! I'll be on 6 months and then try to get off of it under Dr. care. (I have Medicare - thankfully - which covered the psychiatrist who i now see every 6 weeks.). Befgore we found Lexapro my gastro guy pot me on Adivan (generic) which worked as needed but only for a few hours. (It's for anxiety.). Hope this helps. The best advice I got was to see a Medical Psychiatrist.

Off to Dr. Das (HoLep surgeon) in 5 hours! Will report back.

Okay back from my checkup with Dr. Das. Clean bill of health. Emptied completely! And good flow. He wants to see me in 5 months (1 year surgery anniversary) and a PSA test then (annually). The guy is great! He also thi9nks very highly of Dr, Lingerman - if you are closer to the mid-west. I told him that I owe a lot to him. The surgery has me of urology pills and up once a night at most! The only thing you NEED to know going in - is that full recovery could take 5 months (Mine was closer to 4) but it's mostly the inconvenience of wearing a pad (which I never needed but had there just in case) and don't plan surgery for the week before Christmas!

Looking forward to updates from the others.

Hi Steve,

I am dong very well.  I am still loosing a few drops of urine throughout the day as I have a streneous job  involving heavy lifting. No problems at night at all. I held 500 cc through the night a few days ago and emptied out in about 10 seconds!  I have great erections, orgasms are normal ,but I do have Retrograde ejaculation,  However once in a while I do have a normal ejaculation which can be quite forceful, but reduced volume.

This surgery has been a life changer for the good.  Dr Lingeman and his staff are the best !

Im glad you are doing so well!  Have you had your new PSA test yet?  I would like to know what it is for comparison.

"Dr Lingeman and his staff are the best !" I respectfully disagree. BOTH DR. Lingerman (from your case study) and Dr. Das (his teacher and my surgeon) are the BEST! ;-)

Had PSA done in December before the surgery. Next on in December just before I see Dr. Das again.

I think we are both "poster 'boys'" for HoLep!

Thanks Steve for all the information. will definitely look into a Psychiatrist.
I am having HOLEP surgery next Wednesday at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Humphreys is my DR.
A little nervous but I know Dr Humphreys is one of the best HOLEP surgeons.
