I am still scheduled for the 16th of this month although I had a real good day yesterday (only got up once at night) so I keep vascillating a bit!

Who will be the surgeon?

I am told the younger you are and the smaller your prostrate the shorter the recovery.

The very best to you.

I had HoLep at Mayo 2 weeks ago. Just got rid of blood but continue with urgency, frequency, and razor like pain on void. Mayo Dr has been very responsive with Rx additional antibiotic now (BACTRIM). and a followup to rule out a clot and other possible post op issues. Unfortunately they found cancer in tissue removed, scored a Gleason 6. Mayo will test again in 6 months for cancer. I believe I ended up with prostatitis post op, and hope to be on my way to recovery from surgery. HoLep may have removed the cancer, and the procedure was a big plus to identify cancer that went undetected in all the pre op test.

Hello,

I certainly hope and pray that the surgeon got all of the cancer. I had colon cancer removed just prior to my HoLEP. It proved to be stage 1 (a different scale). It sounds like they may have caught yours early.

I have a high pain tolerance according to my surgeon. Post op I did not experience pain when urinating but during the time of healing I felt like all of the prostate nerves were firing after I moved or compresssed the prostate followed by a strong urgency. That has, thankfully, subsided. I am 5 months out and the incontinence is now down to drips and dribbles. I am using one mini-pad (shield) a day.

Please keep in touch.

Well, had the HoLEP yesterday; arrived at the hospital 6 AM ...home by 12:30. Catheter in...no real pain but constant feeling like I have to pee (which is crazy since I know the cath is in). It seems to be clearing pretty well...looks like apple juice now. I do have some bleeding around the tip of the catheter. They're going to take it out tomorrow...fingers crossed.

Well, the cath is out for about 3 hours (that parts a relief) but so far I'm pretty incontinent...don't even feel it coming out. Especially when I'm sitting and then stand up. Have only been able to pee a dribble on my own and it's a tiny stream (smaller than presurgery). And boy does the tip burn. But I know it's early.

I don’t remember a small stream after surgery but I do remember that I wore paper underwear and had to change it frequently the first two weeks then I graduated to pads.

The one thing that is memorable is that I had a catheter in me that was two way. They had saline flush going into me and then the urine coming out. That was the most uncomfortable fourteen hours! That thing was HUGE.

my catheter was removed the day after surgery. I did have incontinence several times a day for the first week or two, and as I recall (it's been a year and a half since my operation) I did experience burning on urination for, I think about a week. It took me several months before I was comfortable going without an incontinence pad. Today, I wear a pad rarely, only when I will be in a situation where I don't know if I'll be able to find/get to a bathroom for several hours. I will be taking a long plane ride in two months and will probably wear a pad then.
I think my experience is fairly typical of Holep survivors. So, hang in there, Daniel, better days are coming!

I experienced the same thing Daniel. Didn't even feel it coming out as it freely flowed the first day. I had no control at all. That improved fairly quickly, but I wore full pants for a good 2 weeks squirting frequently until things got slowly better before I had the confidence to move to shields. I'm at 7 months now and still dribble and drip every day (more when active, less when not) and always wear a shield (usually no more than 1 a day). Now I pee'd like a fire-hose from the 2nd day that cath came out, but I had a catheter for a full 3 days, and spent 16 hours with a 2-way catheter pumping saline to flush. You MAY be experiencing clots that are slowing your flow. You may want to chat with your MD to see (just a thought). I am confident things will improve for you quickly. Continue please to let us know - we're all with you!

Catheter out about 20 hours. I guess I'm doing better. The stream is pretty strong now though it goes sideways sometimes and the latter half is very blood tinged and still burns. Moderately incontinent but diapers work. The biggest problem right now is that I have to pee every 1-2 hours...I was up most of the night. I guess it's because my bladder muscles are so enlarged...hopefully this will improve soon.
Thanks everyone for your encouragement and for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Daniel,

It sounds like you are right on track. The urge incontinence will go away over time. It is different for all of us. I can tell you that I can sleep a lot better than before. I can get a solid 3 to 4 hours of sleep. Others have reported that they can go all night.

Hang in there it gets better. The next level is when you graduate to just pads.
