I am a 41 year old woman with a fibroma on my right ovary. My ob/gyn has referred me to a gynecologic oncologist, but believes that I need to have both the fibroma and the ovary removed. I don't want the ovary removed, if at all possible. Does anyone have any experience in this?
Dear Maryanne,

In 2008 I had a 7 pound fibroma. I was diagnosed with fibroma/type 2 cancer. I wanted two opinions. My gynecological oncologist in Las Vegas wanted to dissect and re-sect my bowel. I ended up at the Mays Clinic for Gynecological Cancer at the MD Anderson Campus, in Houston, for a second opinion. Fortunately they assured me that there was probably no need for a colostomy bag. I had a radical hysterectomy which includes taking the vaginal walls(vagina), ovaries, uterus, and an excision of all my belly fat and nodes(sounds great but, leaves you a little flabby:).

I don't know how large your fibroma is, but my understanding is that they grow fast and furious. One day I was thin and the next I looked pregnant. If your oncologist is not informed and your fibroma grows large, he could dissect your bowel and try to re-sect it later, which may or may not work. You could have a colostomy bag for the rest of your life.

You can find the Mays Clinic online. They are extremely helpful and will send you all the info that you need to make the right decision for yourself.

Hope this helps.
Peggy
