My 5-yr old twin grandsons developed Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease from a daycare they were at. It is a virus that is highly contagious. Now, 4 weeks later, all symptoms are gone from the HFMD [fever, blisters, malaise, etc.], but we notice that on one of them, 4 nails on his hands look like he is recovering from some sort of finger trauma. It looks like there has been a blood blister under the nail and the nail has separated from the nail bed. A new nail is growing, pushing the old nail out of the way. He has had no finger trauma.
I have read where the viruses that cause HFMD, and there are many types, can cause this to happen. We are told that the new nail should continue to grow and push the old nail out of the way. Also, the risks are that the old nail will break away from the cuticle yet hang on in another place and possibly be torn away when snagged on something like their clothing. Keeping an eye on the progress and trimming the nail close will help prevent any discomfort if/when the nail is torn away.
We are also told that there should be no lasting side effects from the virus.:-)

Hello Everybody. My daughter developed a fever last month and four weeks after that all her nails show grooves close to the root indicating that they will fall off. This includes both her finger and toe nails. The reason for that according to the dermatologist that we visited is that the fever that occurred last month shocked normal nail development. Therefore the nail that was present during the fever is now slower than the post (after) fever nail which is growing faster causing the nail to fall off. She told us to supplement her food with Vitamin E, and if the nail is broken it should be covered and covered with Bactroban cream to prevent infections. I hope this helps.

There is a virus called hand, foot and mouth that causes skin to peel off in large, thick chunks. It can cause their feet and hands to be sore. it can take a few weeks to go away.

My 5 year old and 2.5 year old both had Hand Foot Mouth Disease (aka Fifth Disease). My 5 year old's symptoms were mild with pain in his feet and hands. Several weeks later that was followed by several layers of skin peeling from both his hands and feet. My 2.5 year old's symptoms were more severe, with the tell-tale signs of bright red cheeks, whole body rash (hives), painful feet and hands. Several weeks later his feet peeled and now about 6 weeks later 1 of his toenails has detached and 2 more are starting to detach from the nail bed/cuticle. When the toenail fully came off, there was a new toenail underneath. This is all related to the Fifths Disease. The pediatrician diagnosed them and said they should heal on their own and will be fine. No medication was needed.

If your child had HFM (Hand foot and Mouth ) in the last 2-4 weeks this is another symptom (i.e. fingernails falling off- Onychomadesis) This was happening to my daughter and I was freeking until I found out. The fingernails will grow back without treatment.

Hi - I'm probably joining this thread a little too late, as I notice all the messages were posted over a year ago, but my reply might help... My daugher who is 2 years old currently has the exact same problem with her fingernails. Almost all of them have broken at the cuticle, turned white where they are lifting from the nail bed and fallen or are falling off. Her toe nails are also affected, though not as badly. Just over a month ago she had chickenpox, though the spots only affected her chin and her bottom (she was very lucky!) but two weeks after the spots had cleared up I noticed the skin on her hands and feet, especially around the fingertips and toes, was falling off in large, thick pieces. It literally looked as though she had dipped her fingers and toes in acid. Now, approximately 2 weeks after her skin has returned to normal, her finger and toe nails are starting to fall off! I took her to the doctors today who explained that these types of symptoms are very common in children who have recently fought some infection, so could well have been brought on by the chickenpox - though usually it happens after a bout of flu or other similiar virus. He called it telegon which more usually affects hair growth, causing it to fall out (luckily it hasnt as she doesn't have much yet!) though it can also affect the growth of new nails. Now that the infection is out of her system, her nails are growing normally again, pushing off the old ones. She isnt distressed by this at all, but it doesnt look nice! I hope this helps, as it is very disturbing for a mother to see.

Thanks for the advise.
Both my 18month old and 5year old have fingernails falling off. They both had Hand Foot and Mouth Disease not long ago. Looks like that was the cause. New nails are growing underneath so no big worries.

I noticed a month ago a fingernail on each hand of my four-year old child corroding and breaking at the cuticle and and loosening. The cuticle where the breakage is looks white. The nails otherwise look normal in color. They will fall off soon. Now I see the same thing happening to a big toe nail. What could this signify? Thanks.
Okay so my son has this happening as well. please do some research on Kawasaki Disease. This is what my son has. If your child is showing any more of the symptoms please call your docter imediatly as your child will need to be hospitalized and givin some special meds. This disease effects the heart more the corinary artery and causes sweilling so high doses of asprin are used. Please look into this as it is very dangerous.
