I got my gall bladder removed about a year and a half ago. I'll be 22 in August. I ate healthy as a kid and apart from the occasional fast food and sodas kept to a decent diet when I got older. I never went through a heavy drinking phase or anything else... so of course when I started having severe stomach pains the last thing that came to mind was gall bladder issues. I suffered for over a year with the pains on and off. I thought that it was perhaps a food allergy (my friend suggested this because he suffered from pains in the stomach) because I've always had horrible allergies. I cut back on dairy food and started taking allergy pills, but nothing helped. I came online and researched possibilities and thought that perhaps it was an ulcer so I began taking tums which would help the pain a bit. The last six months prior to my surgery were absolute misery. I didn't have insurance, so I put off going to the doctor for as long as I could. I was literally living on vegetables and fruit, but still had the pains on a regular basis (up to 7-8 times a week prior to my surgery). Thankfully, when the pains started becoming much more regular, my insurance became active. I made a trip to a doctor immediately who prescribed medicine for ulcers and sent me to get an ultra sound. A day after my ultra sound I got a call telling me I needed to see a specialist immediately so that I could make an appointment for surgery. I couldn't even wait the two weeks and ended up in the emergency room and had it removed the next day.
After the surgery I had a real hard time getting rid of the gas and was in absolute agony. I didn't go to the bathroom for 5 days or so, and the gas was just NOT leaving my body. My doctor told me to start taking Sienna which has helped, but I still have not returned to normal. I have to take up to 8 Sienna a day in order for it to be effective. If I go a day without it, I end up EXTREMELY bloated and just exhausted. Unfortunately, the Sienna makes my stomach cramp horribly so I find it hard to take when I know I'm not going to be near a bathroom or am going to have to be really active. My hair is also extremely brittle. I've tried everything. I've even gone to the salon and had them deep condition it quite a few times, but no matter what it doesn't work. I try drinking water, but find it hard. Actually... I find drinking anything hard. I take two sips and I feel like my stomach is going to explode. It's miserable and I really hate this. I still have no idea how my gall bladder got bad, but I have theories. I used the shot for birth control (the one that you don't have your period on for a year) and I honestly think that did it for me. I used the shot about 2-3 years prior to my gall bladder, and since then my period has been irregular. I hear the hormones can affect digestion... so yeah.
I'm just furious because I was never told how severe it can be after surgery. I guess it doesn't matter, because I doubt I had a choice. What I really think it falls back on is our society. We preach so much about being little stick figures, but no one is preaching about just being HEALTHY. Issues with the gall bladder can easily be avoided if people are educated.

Hi,
I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time. I think there's a few things that could help you. I would recommend taking digestive enzyme supplements with meals (you can get them at Whole Foods or any GNC)--check the label and make sure they have 5 different enzymes or more. Although your bile flows constantly now, it is much weaker so you need to add some additional enzymes to help with the bloating, gas and constipation. You're constipated partly because the food isn't breaking down enough in your upper GI tract. Eat more roughage in the form of fruits and vegetables to help keep the food moving though. Chew Lots to break the food down as much as you can!!! Don't drink anything (water include) while you eat, it dilutes your enzymes. Avoid processed wheat and dairy, they are very hard to digest and they will constipate you--they're like glue in your system. Some people get alot of help from bile salt supplements also.
In regard to your brittle hair, this is a sign that you're not absorbing essential fatty acids well (on the inside). This is common with weaker bile flow. You'll need to OVER-supplement EFA's in the form of fish oil, flax seed/oil and/or hemp. Eat lots of salmon too. For sure take fish oil capsules or liquid everyday. This is really important, the brittle hair is just the first sign of malabsorption. If it persists you will begin to feel lethargic and have reduced focus and concentration. One thing I do in the morning that has helped alot is I make a fruit smoothie every morning with flax, coconut or hemp oil and I add 1-2T of soy lecithin (also at GNC or Whole Foods). Soy lecithin is a fat emulsifier, it will help your body absorb the essential fatty acids in the oil.
I hope this helps. Good Luck!!

I had my gallbladder removed almost 2 years ago, The doctors don't tell you all the problems you will have afterwards. If i have plans to go out i cannot eat or drink anything for atleast a day prior to the day i am going out. And i certainly DO NOT eat or drink while i am out. I get severe pains where my gallbladder was. I was told that is my liver, or phantom gallbladder pains. I have no energy, sometimes every bone in my body hurts. I catch every cold or bug that's going around. I don't drink any kind of alcohol I don't drink anything carbonated and i watch what i eat, but none of that has stopped the diarrhea or the chronic pain. In fact I was in the hospital for 3 days, due to uncontolled high blood pressure. And the doctor suggested I might have crohns disease but his discussion of it ended there. He gave me a script for my blood pressure and zoloft, as he said the pains were a sign of depression. I took the zoloft for a week. It had me shaking and very nervous, like i was waiting for something bad to happen. I didn't have those feelings before the zoloft, so I stopped taking it. I don't think depression was the correct diagnosis. I would just like to find someone to give me the answers I need. And i would like to have my life back.

I had my gallbladder removed 5 years ago now. I was 38 then and had had unexplained stomach pains since i was 12. I had always been told it was acid reflux. I couldn't get my doctors over the years to do anything about it. I ended up driving my self to the hospital after a 8 hour attack and finally the er doc did a ultra sound and poof it was the gallbladder. I ended up getting it removed 2 days later, but what aggravated me was, they did a scope to see how bad it was, and told me i would have the simple surgery. I woke up with a big scar and a 2 week hospital stay they said i had a infection and that the gall bladder was so bad when they got in there it was falling apart and had 40 stones at least in it. I wasn't told about a special diet, wasn't told what i should do to get back to normal. I had to do some research.
It took me a month and a half after surgery to feel better, and that didn't last but a couple months. I have a upset stomach 1/2 the time, doesn't matter if i eat healthy or stuff i shouldn't. I have diarrhea most of the time and maybe have a normal bowl movement 1 day a week if i am lucky.
This whole experience has made me distrust doctors. I may have gotten a bad one, but I have not been back to one since and plan never to go again to one. I still feel after 5 years i was butchered.
My advice is for anyone who has to have it out, get a second opinion, check out your surgeons background and make sure you know what your in for.

Just a note on the Vitamin D issue: anyone who has had their gallbladder removed should consider taking a Vitamin D3 supplement. Bile, produced by the gallbladder, is crucial to the proper breakdown and assimilation of fats.
Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat soluble and those with impaired fat digestion or on extremely low-fat diets are at risk of becoming deficient in one or all these. Vitamin D is especially a concern, as deficiency is already very common, especially in northern areas. 5000IU's a day of Vitamin D3 should be a part of any post gall bladder removal regimen.
On another note, the issue of impaired fat digestion can be addressed with digestive enzymes. When taken with a meal, they assist your body in the breakdown of foods, in this case fats specifically. They can help tremendously with discomfort caused by low bile. If you have 20 bucks to experiment with, I cannot reccomend them enough.
Therazyme has a wonderful formula for fat digestion:
NOW Foods also makes a decent enzyme formula for those on a budget:
Or there are a plethora of other brands out there, just look specifically for lipase and ox bile in the ingredients.

Hi,
Just thought I would chime in here. I had my Gall bladder out going on 4 years ago I am male and now 34. I ate like a typical kid and teenager and drank pop like it was water so it happened one night in a severe Gall bladder attack, I killed it. I had to have it out the discussion was had while I was on morphene and I can say that I was advised that I should be able to go back to ewating pizza and fries with no issues. They Lied
At first I lost like 30 lbs, I have now gained half of that back. For the last year or so My depression and lethargy were getting progressivly worse I could time the bathroom runs to 45 minutes after anything that contained Nitrates or was High in fat. My job suffered and so did my life outside of work. I have been sick more now than I have been in years.
In the last month though I feel like a new man. I have started taking digestive enzymes with my meals take 1000mg of Vit D every day and a probiotic drink every AM. The bathroom runs have lessened, but still happen, but I have energy again. The fog has lifted over me and I now know that the last years was sue to malnutrition.
Was in store for the future I think some Fatty acid suplements may be added and acidopolus? My co-worker swears by the stuff. Best of luck out there.
Remember Doctors are "general" practitioners and do not know us as well as we do. together we can come together and share our stories and learn for each other but they will never admit that they do not know.

I had my gallbladder removed when I was 18, I am 25 now. Fresh out of high school, I found myself working the overnight shift at a local store, tending to sleep a great deal during the day. During this time I decided to get my life under control. I had been obese my entire life and enough was enough. Over the course of about 6 months I lost an incredible amount of weight due to a self-created (foolish) diet consisting of less than 3 grams of fat a day, and very high in fiber. Roughly 115lbs in 6 months. I had experienced a dramatic change in my energy level, but attributed it to working the overnight hours; It wasn't unusual for me to sleep up to 12 hours a day. Through it all, I was very happy with my life. I was down to about 220lbs, 5'10 and losing an average of 5-7lbs per week, working and sleeping away the time preparing for college.
One night while I was off work, I woke up about 3am with incredible stomach pain. I'm sure most of you have experienced this before and know exactly what it was. No position helped, I found myself laying on the floor, getting up, sitting on the stairs, going into the bathroom, waking up my parents asking for help. My mother always at the ready produced some aspirin and sent me back to bed, all to no avail. Eventually the pain subsided. A week later, another 'attack', this one even worse than the last. I was literally crawling across the floor crying. I ended up driving myself to the emergency room and testing revealed that I had gallstones. The doctor indicated that my gallbladder was filled like a gumball machine. The only option provided to me was laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder. I met with a surgeon that day and went on to have the procedure performed less than a week later. All the while being told that it was like having my tonsils taken out and that after a month it would be as if it never happened.
Two days following the procedure, I was rushed back into the emergency room, jaundiced, feverish, and what felt to me as if I were dying. A urinalysis was requested and my sample was the color of coca cola. The diagnosis? Shockingly enough, gallstone.
I was confused, this was supposed to be an hour long procedure and I was supposed to be on my way with a few weeks off on medical leave from work. Apparently a possibility never revealed to me had become a reality. A gallstone had found its way out of the gallbladder during the procedure and became trapped in a liver duct. Another procedure (and applicable medical bills) I was back home again.
Fast forward 7 years. (7 already...) I gained back every bit of weight lost after the near death of my metabolism. Despite taking on a more healthy diet including vegetables, non-red meat, fruits, etc and bi-daily exercise, the weight would not be stopped. Eventually I gave up. I actually gained back more than I had lost. At this point in time, no matter what I eat, I suffer stomach cramping and diarrhea within 20-30 minutes. I am always tired, my energy is spent. I'm depressed. I wish I had been told the truth in regards to the long-term effects of this procedure. At this point I should have been back to normal 6 years and about 4 months ago.
I urge anyone considering this procedure to research all of the options. Don't let anyone pressure you into a choice. More importantly than anything, ASK QUESTIONS.
Sorry for the life story.
*Note that my experience with this procedure is not the normal outcome, most people I have spoken with regarding it have had highly positive outcomes with only minor side effects, but nothing is ever certain. Having said that, surgery should never be the first and only choice in regards to this particular illness.

I had my gallbladder removed on the 13th of January. I had to go back to the hospital two days later for an ultrasound and an iv because I was dehydrated. It's now the 31st of January and for the last 3 days I've been throwing up. I can't keep anything down. I am running a fever. I had a few sips of gatorade this morning and that has stayed down so far. I wondering if what I am experiencing is normal?

Hey There!
I was told today that my gall bladder is only emptying at the rate of 23% (healthy is 60% or over) & I must have it removed. I dont have stones, just a slow or dysfunctioning gall bladder. However, I have been 7 kilo's ligther than normal the last 3 years (Currenly 46 kilos normally 52 would love to be 55 kgs). Doctor's only answer always was I was too stressed from work or home, smoking etc - then my mum had a stroke & I had to care for her full time & the weight dropped further 43 kilos (A mates daughter even asked me if I was anorexic).
History: Had failure to thrive as kid. In the last 10 yrs I haven't been able to consume soft drinks (fizzy drinks) or alcohol (unless without lots n lots of ice (i.e.1/2 ice, 1/2wine) - hey it's unaustralian not to drink at every opportunity we can get it. In my early 20's I developed a sensitivity to certain fruits (apples pears berries) & nuts in their raw state (itchy mouth, hives, sores eyes it varies) but CAN eat these if cooked??? - was told this was a protein thing that can't be solved. Have had survere depression 3 times. Late 20's later I got invasive pneumonioccol desease (spelt wrong sorry) - which gave me with blood poising (rigor), lungs filled with fluid & even vomitting blood & a terrible ache in my upper right centre chest area - had a gut ultra sound but showed nothing. 7 months later I had too much to drink & couldn't stop spewing, same ache in chest & was given nexium for a month.
More recent now 35: 4 months into mum's stroke (20 mths ago) I was sent to the ER with internal bleeding, after 9 hrs waiting they sent me home with panadol & then they rang apolosing the next day asking me to return then they did an endoscope to ID a bleeding ulcer. Put me on nexium. Been on that till 3 weeks ago was doubled over in pain all night, no position i sat, lay, crawled or yoga'd alleviated what felt like someone kneeding my intestines like pizza dough & putting them through a pasta maker. I went to the doc (scared ER would not take me seriously as internal bleeding last time certainly i wasn't bleeding enough.....) she increased the nexium & gave me a note for the hospy incase it struck again. I went on for 10 days for the increase to work to only get my sis to drop me at hospital on Australia Day (2 weeks ago) to get them to find out what it wrong.
They fasted me on & off for 4 days packed me Endone pain tabs & somac (necxium replacement) , did a CT scan after drinking contrast stuff for an hour - nothing, & this HIDA scan which showed that my gall bladder won't empty property on 26% success. I was then sent home with pain tabs & to wait for an appt with the gastro dude. In the week waiting I was home bound, sleeping 12 hrs a day - used to struggle to get 5 hrs a night, have a worse pain all over my guts & one morning experienced even nastier sharper pain on my left side like a squirting pain (if that makes sense - something being squeezed) it held me completely unable to move for 1 minute. 5 or 6 minutes later, I eventually made my way to the phone & as dialing broke into a mad sweat & was about to faint. lying on the floor I recovered terrified at what the NEW pain was & rang the hospy gastro area for advise - 3 hrs later they rang back telling me to see GP. I saw GP next day, she said it was panic attacks (which I've apparently suffered for years, burning guts, about to completely c**p myself, shaking hands & jaw) & said just wait till today appt. Today i get told my GB must be removed!!
I think I've had a GB prob for fricken years now! & everyone has ignored my pain, my suggestion that something else is wrong. I've asked what can kick start it again, but no useful answer. I've been told to relax more - as I've been in counselling for years due to this so called nervious stomach!!!! if i was anymore relaxed i'd had my own book, be tony robins or seriously be able to stop my heart pumping I know so many relaxation techniques!!. I think it's been this GB!! I'm going drink heaps of water, continue & escalate my more than healthly eating & see what effect that has as there are NO stones, no infections & no tumors, I want them to check my liver further as it's the boss of all things in that area. I'm terrifed of the side effects you all mention as I've been through enough. I'd rather investigate anything I can prior to having my first ever surgery!! I feel at the mo' i'm in the posy to maybe have choice about it, so if I can save my GB I'll give it a good hard Aussie go!.
Thank you all for scaring the consitpation from the pain meds outta me!. I'm getting second opinion's, what ever i can!.

I stumbled upon this site looking for information about my liver, and here it goes back to my gallbladder. I had my gall bladder removed about 6 years ago and that was after having a child and having back surgery...so I was well "used". After the surgery, I gained weight even with a diet and became very frustrated. Before getting pregnant, I was exercising 3 days a week and in the best shape of my life at 40. After all this I gained 50 pounds. My energy level has dropped out of the bottom and I get depressed from all this.
I just had blood work done and it came back with a high Alkaline Phosphatase level. The doctor called it "fatty liver". A lot of the information I have found on line that a lot of information has included gall bladders. Although nothing as stated directly that it may cause it. It does mention weight and bile in everything.
Does anyone have any additional information about the correlation between the gall bladder and "fatty liver"?
Thanks to all of you who have written your experiences. Even tho a lot of us have had similar experiences, I'm sure energy and weight gain is still an issue for all of us.
Thank you

i had my gall bladder removed about a year ago at age 22, it just wasnt functioning, it would continue to contract and wouldnt release for HOURS causing extreme pain. After my surgery i felt better pain wise but i was just waiting for my energy level to increase. Well i still feel drained all the time, i have an extreme intolerence for alcohol, and no matter what i eat i feel as though my body is not absorbing any of the nutrients. I lost 12 lbs before my surgery due to the pain i would experience every time i ate. My family all said i looked so sickly at 5'7' 113lbs. i looked forward to getting my energy back and regaining my healthy physique. But still to this day i am constantly plagued with fatigue, hard time concentrating, and constantly going to the bathroom. As a result i still havent put on a single pound and am still be told by family that i look ill. I have been into the doctors several times and they tell me this is all a normal part of recovery. I dont miss the pain one bit but i must say i miss my old lifestyle, so if you dont have to have it removed i would hold off as long as possible. for me its been an uphill battle both ways.

I feel a little different... I started having pains in my side, back and horrible heart burn. The heart burn started and I thought it was due to eating to fast.. however after I looked back over time I saw that the symptom was due to my gall bladder. With the pain at first I thought it was Kidney stones but the dr ran a sonogram on me to see if I had gall stones. I didn't have stones, however I started to get worse and for the next 2 months anyhing I ate lasted maybe 3 minutes and came back up. He then ran the hydascan or hidascan not sure how its spelt and it showed that my gall bladder had just shut down on me with only 18% still working. By the time I had surgery and got it out it as about to rupture and that was only about a week or so later. Has anyone else had this problem of it shutting down without any reason... I have no kids *as they say moms are more easily to suffer this issue*.
I have went fro a size 5 to a 9/10 yet its just in my lower tummy where I cant fit into my pants. I look swollen and have tried many differet things to lose the weight. I feel awkward becauce even from high school and when I first started colleg I weighed 125-135 Im like solid muscle now i weigh 140-145 and jumped like to a 10... to me that seems odd and very bad on my self image of myself. I feel insecure as ever and I hate the way my stomach looks. I have constant problems and it happens randomlly... I never know if what I eat is going to make me hurt or cause bowel movements or not. I have found it to be all types of food not just the fatty ones as well. Even salad at times will hurt me the worst. I recently got a subway salad and instead of dressing i just squeeze maybe 2 or 3 teaspoons of lime on it. Not even that much really just to give it flavor and it tore my stomach up. I cant do dairy at all, no bbq, no beer, and yet other days cheese wont do a thing to me.. I have nexium that kills my pocket book but even that doest help me. If I hurt it feels to what to me is like a heart attack.
Has anyone gone thru this? Is there anything at all that can be done or with time does it ease a lil or get any better?

I had my gallbladder removed 4 months ago. After 1 full month of feeling nauseous and queasy as I ate then escalating within 1 day to debilitating pain, I was glad to get rid of the gallbladder and the stones! The surgery went smoothly and my recovery was quite easy.
I have had no long term effects from the removal with the exception of really really greasy foods bothering me. Am glad to know about the liver effects to pay attention to, but I have returned to excercising, eating a little better than before, and have lost 7 pounds! Everyone has different reactions to medical issues and surgeries and this one was a great benefit to me!

I had my gall bladder removed when I was 15 and ever since then I have had various problems with excess bloating, and gasses. I really have found this blog useful because I had not considered the bile problem. I definitely have to get on a diet which will help alleviate some of the problems I have encountered after the surgery.
