I was had a scan which revealed gallstones 10yrs ago after visiting dr with pains both in the right side and the right shoulder. I decided to give it a go managing this with weight loss and lower fat diet. Within a year symptoms and discomfort had disappeared. I remained symptom free for years. Then over the last year i have noticed the symptoms are back but only during my menstrual cycle. It starts anywhere between 3-8 days before my period and lasts a few days into it. The worse thing is that because the pain comes at a point when i am emotionally all over the place then i start imagining alsorts of terrible things in my head usually culminating in liver cancer. So it was a real relief to enter the link between gallbladder discomfort and menstrual cycles and find this thread. Thanks for everyone who has posted.

I also suffer from gallbladder spasms before my period. I have been treating this with a diet change. Mostly eating all natural or organic vegetables and proteins(meats).I do eat dairy like yogurt, milk, and cheese but I try to limit my intake to one dairy product a day and none the days before my period. I also take Solaray brand Dandelion( it is a mix of root and leaf). 2 pills with each meal when I think I'm going to get an attack (like the days leading up to my period). You can take 2 pills up to 4 times in one day. It is all natural and dandelion stimulates bile production and it is one of the best liver cleansers. It increases the activity of the liver and the flow of bile into the intestines. So while it helps with the bile for the gallbladder it is also helping cleanse the liver of excess estrogen which helps lessen gallbladder spasms before and during your period. Sometimes dandelion doesn't fully do the job and when this happens(usually when I break my diet and eat something fatty which sometimes you just have to cheat) I take a homeopathic remedy called chelidonium majus made by boiron. This homeopathic calms the spasms and pain when my gallbladder goes crazy. Some months are symptom free other months(when i feel my hormones seem a bit out of whack) I get an attack. I just read recently that another homeopathic called belladonna might work better for the spasms because it is said to relax the smooth muscles and relieve spasms. I haven't tried this one yet but might give it a shot soon. I heard it is also helpful for menstrual cramps. I have blabbed on enough. Hope I could be of help to anyone. Thanks for reading and good luck to all of us in hopes that one day doctors can figure out why this is happening to so many women.

I am so relieved to find this conversation thread. To know that I am not alone makes me feel infinitely better. For years I have been dealing with this pain that started one day after my period began. In the last year or so the pain during my period is severe. I told my OBGYN and she dismissed it and told me to take ibroprofen before my period. (unhelpful!). The pain was radiating and would come in waves. Now it is so intense that I can barely function for a full day of my period. I haVe been having symptoms I foolishly ignored separately from my period. Feeling like I had a rubber ball tucked under my rib cage, bloating and other symptoms of gallbladder issues. I have just seen a gastro doc and my testing will be complete with the results in a few days time. After reading everyone else's posts I haven seen many successful natural remedies. I am so happy to see that. But my pain during my periods is so severe that I am losing one day a month of of my life to this, and 2-3 days afterwards to the residual pain. Not to mention the anxiety of knowing the pain will come. My question is why removing the gall bladder not an option for so many of you? Good luck to all of you, and here's to more of us finding the support we need!

I had my first gallbladder attack 2 years ago, after stopping birth control pills. Went to the gastro and was diagnosed with GERD (even though I never complained about indigestion or hear burn). Told him that I thought it was a gallbladder attack and he agreed. Decided that since was feeling ok, no need to follow up at that time. Fast forward to present and for the last 5 months experience symptoms again, mainly around my menstrual cycle. Now I even get a migraine (over right eye once a month). Going to the gastro doc today and will hopefully have my gallbladder test to see if functioning correctly. My symptoms are: monthly migraine, gas, constipation, pain or ache in lower right rib cage. Also, pain when doing certain functions ie: exercise, dance.

I have had the same symptoms as you with the same outcome as you. My doctor can't seem to find anything. Although, I'm now having more and more persistent pain and problems. Guess I need to push the issue more with my doctors, maybe you should as well. Good luck.

I thought I was alone on this subject...and did not want to even talk to the dr. about this link, I figured the dr. would think I am crazy. . but I also have notice the gallbladder pain with the onset of my menstral cycle. it seems to hit the strongest about 2 weeks before menstration begins... I have had many test and an ultrasound of my gallbladder and they can't find anything wrong..the dr. says its IBS...I don't think so. I have been dealing with this for 10 years and have tried a lot of remidies, diets, gallbladder flushes etc... so far what seems to help the most is taking" PURIFY" its a detox herbal gut cleansing formula that makes you "go" every day, it keeps everything in your gut moving and it seems to the best thing I have tried. I have been on it for 2 weeks and just started my period and I feel fine...no gallbladder pain...relief at last ! any other remedies out there??
