OK, so according to numerous running calculators out there on the web, I punched in my 5K time, and my goal pace for the half should be 1:40.00.

I think this is too fast.

Help!

Mine says 1:39:36. GO FOR IT!

Don't be too sure. I used WAVA, which also takes age into account. Based on my latest 5K time, my half should be 1:53:00-1:54:00, and my full marathon 4:01:00-4:02:00. Those are pretty close to what I've done recently (within three minutes for my last half, and seven for Mad City).

I think you are probably right. No offense, but if you don't put in the miles, in most cases the 5k time doesn't convert to half. This is only my opinion, but from what I've observed, it is especially true of young, athletic guys like you that come from a very active sports background.

I'd plan to take it out by feel. Run the first 5 easy (10-15 seconds slower than what that calculator says) and every couple of miles drop the pace a few seconds, with 5k left you'll be feeling it, but if it's a good day you should be able to run the last few miles near 10k pace. If you can't, you can't, but you'll be happy that you didn't take the first 5 miles fast.

Granted, i would normally advise even splits...but if you're having trouble knowing where you're at, I think starting slower that what you think is better than going out too fast.

Thanks sue, that's about exactly what I was thinking, and I probably really just needed to hear that from someone.
You know what they say about great minds.
