I've been having trouble keeping a grip on the handles on the weight machines (lat pull, chest press, overhead press, arm curls, tricep extension, seated row). The handles are black rubber covered steel.

In the absence of chalk, what should I use?

You could try gloves. You may also want to work on grip strength. Wrist curls are good. Another one you can do at home is to crunch sheets of newspaper up into a ball one hand at a time. This is much harder then it sounds and will build grip strength.

Forgive me, but what's a wrist curl?

Instead of crumpling newspaper, would squeezing a stress ball do the same thing you think?

Wrist Curl
Reverse Curl
A stress ball is good if it give you enough resistance. If you are not tired after 20 reps try a tennis ball.
