Has anyone had the 'keyhole surgery' approach to hammer toe correction? I've read it has very fast recovery time and very little pain, and that you can basically walk out of the surgery.

Oh my gosh, I just came across this forum (4/15/2013) and can identify with some of your issues.
Can you tell me how everything has turned out for you from your surgery over a year ago?
Hopefully you are happily back on your feet with no problems.

Hi. I read your post and was really curious as to how your foot/toe is doing now. I had a plantar plate repair and the middle joint was fused on may 30th. I am experiencing the same issues as you and I am scared to death. I am wondering if getting this surgery was the biggest mistake of my life. Been out of work for 7 weeks and can't even imagine going back anytime soon. Any feedback u can provide would b useful.

Sounds like your fat pad on the bottom of your foot disappeared. There is a Dr in Los Angels who can replace the fat pad so the bones on the bottom of the foot aren't on the ground! Hope that helps.

I also had this problem after surgery and the same pain for years afterwards I got passed it though with some very painful stretching and that took a long time to do. The way it was explained to me was that the foot is extremely sensitive do to so many nerve endings in it and just a little bit of scar tissue will cause the burning pain. While my toe did not revert to pre-op position, the burning did ease with a bunch of exercises that ballet dancers do and massaging the area the scar tissue is with coco butter lotion. I hope this helps you.

I had hammer toe surgery twice on both feet, from 3/15-12/14, 1st time, kicked the coffee table by accident, and jammed the k-wire into the top of the toe, it pierced the bone and a piece broke off, requiring another surgery to find and remove the broken pin in my foot...the rest was pulled out... Hence, need for 2nd surgery, as both feet ended up failing....I too am having excessive swelling to where it feels like the toe is going to burst...gets itchy, and I also have that tight feeling around the toe. I also have the pain in the foot, directly below that toe area......5 surgeries in all to fix 2 toes and neither one feels ok...both hurt....doc just put me on cephalexan citing a possible bone infection.....what to do? what to do????

I had hammer toe surgery twice, on each foot, 2nd toe...I now have severe swelling, worse than after surgery....have been put on cephalexan for 10 days in case there is a bone infection.... The first surgery on the right foot, I accidently kicked the coffee table and sent the pin into the top of the toe, it split the bone at the bottom and the pin broke off.... had another surgery to remove the piece that was still in the foot. Then, each toe on each foot done again.... I also have the ball of the foot pain as well as the tight elastic on my toe feeling 24/7. Shoes hurt, my feet hurt and walking makes it worse.... suggestions????

What was your outcome all these years later? I had three surgeries in one year (2015) on my left foot. I now have an elevated second toe, burning pain in the toe, pain on the ball of my foot, arthritis in my big toe and intermittent swelling. Some days are worse than others. I currently have to wear a running shoe with a rocker bottom, custom orthotics, metatarsal pads, and the insole is cut out under the second toe as the toe does not have a great range of motion anymore and this alleviates some of the pain from trying to bend the toe at the ball of my foot.

My hammer toe surgery was March 7, 2017. There was bone shaving and pin done to the toe (middle tie). Still have pain and mild swelling. I've read some of the problems others are or have had. Hoping the hammer does not return, and will be happy when I can resume shoes other than flats with a support heel.

I had surgery 12 weeks ago for a hammertoe caused by a torn tendon under the 2nd toe. What can I do to prevent some of the swelling and stiffness in my 2nd toe?
