OMG!!!! I've been having this pulse sound in my ear for 2 mos. only in my left ear! It started with headaches only on left side for about 4 mos. After headaches then came the pulse sound,I went to dr. to check for ear infection,no ear infection...went to dentist to check for any tooth problems,no teeth problems...went to eye dr. for eye problems,no eye problems..I wanted to rule all those out b4 I had an ct scan, everything came out good with the ct scan! I can feel the pulse in the back of my head near my ear,it's the carotid artery....I have an appt. to have an MRI & Ultrasound done to make sure I don't have an clogged artery, anurysm or artery disease,I get those tests on the28th & 30th of this month...We have 2 carotid arteries in the back of our heads 1 on the left side & 1 on the right side, we're not suppose to hear or feel a strong pulse from it!!! there's definately a problem!!! The MRI & Ultrasound will locate the problem, when you get a chance look up carotid artery,I stay on the computer trying to find the problem!! this noise is sooooo annoying,I lose a lot of sleep at night because of this annoying noise! I will keep you guys posted on my results...thanks!! ps.... I am a  healthy 45 yr.old female,I don't smoke or drink,I'm 135 lbs.

I have had this pulsing in the ear problem for about a year, and my doctor is trying to discover the problem. I. too, have excessive phlegm, but associated it with smoking. I have cut the smoking to almost zero, but the phlegm is just as bad. If I find the answer to my problem, I'll let you know. Thanks, Jandel.

That's terrifying. I've had it now for three months, and doctors look at me like I'm crazy. I FEEL like I'm going crazy. I'm FAR from an irritable person, but I'm becoming more and more irritated with everthing because of this. My headaches have increased, and it's putting a hinder on my life. My doctor prescribed me blood pressure medicine, but my blood pressure is fine....so I won't take it. He prescribed me the nasal spray with no luck. Finally I begged him for a referral to an ENT, which I'm waiting to see. I have chronic ear infections; however, I haven't had one in awhile. Stress increases the pulsating feeling, but it's almost a constant thing. It's worse when I talk or other people talk. I have experienced some vertigo at times as well. My doctor has looked in my ears and found nothing he believed would cause this. I really hope the ENT I was referred to (the best one in Upstate SC) can give me some clue as to what this is. I feel like I'm going insane!

Try applying muscle relaxer ointment like Bengay or flex454 and massage near around lower ear and neck. I had a brief 6 hour issue with hearing heartbeats in my right ear and after applying muscle relaxer it went away 3 hours later.

i've had ringing in my ear for what feels like my whole life, granted i'm only 23.  i woke with this pulsating thing in my ear, now that i see so many have the problem with no solution, i want to point i've had scared ear tissue for about the same time i've had the ringing. the ringing always goes away when i'm focused on other things and comes back when it's very quiet and have no focus. this week i've extremely stressed out and had (insert bad word here) for sleep. i feel cursed because i love to play guitar and listen to music, but i've always had these ear problems. so if all else fails mind over mater tends to be a big help, for the most part, until you start to have a bad day. so i suppose try not to have too many bad days. good luck to all of you

I've never been so frustrated! I feel like I'm walking around with sea shells strapped to my ears. I can't hear, can't eat, can't sleep. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

I suspect that this particular case could be caused by a leaking Dura( the membrane that surrounds the Brain and the Spine), I have recently spoken to a Radiologist about my ' pulsating Ear sound' who said it is a classic sign of a leaking Dura. He also said that it will probably be leaking in the Thoracic part of the Dura. I am now going to arrange a full Head and Spine scan with a contrasting dye. If it is proven to be a Dura leak , I will then have to have a ' Blood Patch' ( my own Blood injected into the Dura so as to coagulate and seal up the puncture. I must also add that my own Doctor has been very slow to assist in this investigation of my symptoms and thus, I think I will shortly be finding another Doctor. I hope this helps. I do wish you well. Regards....Abe

So did you find out the cause of this problem, I thought it was only me. If I lay down and stick my finger in my ear it stops for a while, I've tried ear drops and like you it didn't work. Tried the holding my breath and popping me ears that was no good either.

I started having the same noise you are referring to after I had a fall on black ice. It resulted in a concussion, busted head, as well as vertigo from the crystals in my ear canal becoming dislodged. I have found that the vertigo can be temporarily treated with physical therapy, but the slushy sound in my ear comes and goes. I've been to numerous ENT's and neurologists with no help. It can get so loud at times that my husband can hear it when he puts his ear up to mine. They first thought that the fall may have caused two blood vessels in my ear to actually merge, but upon testing, that did not happen. It has been 10 years now and I still have episodes of it. If I press on the neck right below my ear, sometimes the noise will stop. It also occurs more when straining when going to the bathroom. Wish I knew what it was and what could be done for it.

How cool, it worked! Holding my neck was momentary but I inhaled and exhaled through my nose, then only used my nose for a minute to breathe and no pulsation sound in my right ear X 5 minutes...Thanx!
