Hi ANGIE, Im 23 years old and diagnosed with:
1.Mild acetabular dysplasia with undercoverage of the superolateral femoral head of my right hip
2. Complex tear of the anterosuperior labrum. Hypertrophy and degeneration of the posterior superior labrum with small non detached tear.
3. Mild insertional tendinosis of the right gluteus medius and minimus tendons
So you are not alone in this! I only had an MRI on my right hip because my left hip has never bothered me..
When I was 13 years old, I had a torn labrum on my right hip. I had hip arthroscopy surgery at 13 to shave the cartalidge. The injury, I was told was caused by my competitive dancing. I started dancing at the age of 4 years old and by 8 I was dancing professionally. I majored in dance and theater in college and since Im injured again, I stopped dancing and have been pursuing my singing career.
I have seen 4 doctors this year and will be seeing another one this month. I have been in no rush to have this 2nd surgery because I was scared and hoping for surgery to be my last resort. I
I have good days and bad days with my hip. Somedays, I dont want to leave my bed because my hip has a dull ache all around from the groin to the side of my right hip to underneath where my sits bones are. I take hot bathes to numb my hip and do stretches and am in Physical therapy doing ultra sound, pilates, some manual hand therapy, and stem therapy. I also took MsN and Glucosamine supplements and try to drink atleast 2 glasses of water in the morning before I eat breakfast.
I have also done "Art of Alignment Fascia tissue Therapy" with a lady named Anne Marie here in New York City. She works on a lot of dancers and patients post hip replacements I know for sure.
Everyday is a learning curve and I try to keep doing my exercises. I've lost weight and have experienced depression from this injury. My parents have been my emotional support. Everyone needs emotional support to help stay positive and keep researching to find out what you can do.
I am debating having another hip scope. I just truly wonder how "manageble" "MILD" hip dysplasia is. I've pretty much read if you have dysplasia then you will need an operation. Im a bit confused bc mild means only a little. It's strange bc I also did not learn that I had mild dysplasia until 10 years after my first hip operation. My advice is to look up doctors who are very experienced with what you need. Make sure they specialize in that procedure and talk to other patients who have had surgery with them
Feel free to write back! Im definitely interested in talking and sharing stories.
Best,
~Alexa

Hi Alexa..since you are in NYC it would be easy for you to see Dr. Sink at Hospital for Special Surgery. He is the best and would know what you need. The problem I have heard with waiting for surgery is that you could do more damage to your hip joint and eventually need a total hip replacement. My 16 yr old neighbor had the surgery last year on one side and is diong great now. Her other side needs it also. The surgery process was a good 3-4 months, but well worth it.
HI- thank you for your response. How do you know of Dr. Sink? Did your neighbor have mild dysplasia or full o dysplasia? did she have multiple labral tears too?
Thank you,
Best,
Alexa

I have had 2 kids one at 18 yrs old and another on at 28yrs old and I was 33 when I find out that I have congenital hip dysplasia in my Left hip. Didnt know until I had arthroscopic surgery and it showed up. It didnt show up on my x-ray or MRI. But yes its painful. I cant sleep, lay on my left side, sit for a long time nor stand and it hurts to walk. My pain meds do not help so if I have to I am going to have the surgery. This will be the third time I have surgery on my left hip but the first time that I will have a hip replacement and i know it will be soon. I can feel it.

I am 49 yrs old. I have been dealing with hip pain for almost 3 years. When it first started I ignored it, thinking I had torn a muscle in my groin. After slowly declining I finally gave in and went to see my family doctor. He did manipulations since my hip was out of place. I had relief for about a day. He referred me to Orthopaedic. That doctor told me I had arthritis and I was too young for hip replacement ..I would have to deal with it. ( this was about a year ago) My family doc has prescribed narcotics for the pain( yes I tried the Nsaids..no relief with them).
I am now to to the point that even sleeping hurts.I have lost more weight than I probably should have, just not hungry when I am in pain.
Found another Ortho doctor. He took one look at my x-rays and MRI and told me I had dysplasia. More severe in the left than the right ( left is my problem hip as of now) and of course arthritis, and bone spurs. At this point he said arthroscopic surgery is pointless due the amount of arthritis I have. He recommended cortisone injections. I got total relief for about 4 days then slowly declined again. Went back for a follow up to see what my next step is and he said he was leaving the practice and am now referred to another doctor.
I am now waiting for my next appt with a new doctor. All the while each day I am able to do less and less. It's really a depressing thing for an active person. A few years ago my hip would "act up" and I would baby it.Being into Taekwondo, I would skip class or use an assistant to demonstrate something that would hurt for me to do. If I knew then what I know now, I would have done things a lot differently. Would have sought treatment from the get go, not ignored it. Maybe I could have spared myself some of this misery and pain?
Best wishes to all dealing with this. I know how hard it is, and sometimes others just understand what we are going through.

Hi, I am a 22 year old female with congenital hip dysplasia. I had two surgeries when I was a kid. However, they were unsuccessful and now I have a painful limp in my left leg, but I have found that massaging with olive oil or mustard oil every night is really helpful.

I am sorry to hear your problem JC, i have been in pain for over 5 years anf just recently been diagnosed with hip dysplasia with a poorly formed acetabulem and femoral head. The pain i get is indescribeable very sharp bursts of pain without warning when sitting standing even sleeping, i am currently on the public health waiting list for an operation, it is coming to a point where i cant work any more as i need to lift heavy panels of glass, i have no insurance that can cover me whilst not working so i am just hoping i get a call from the health department soon as i am rapidly getting worse. I feel for each and every one of you and in the hope we all get some reprieve.

My mom is 63 and was just diagnosed with hip dysplasia... She was born with and the doctors told her that if she had caught it 30 years ago then they could have done something. I am a yoga teacher and have become passionate about Yin Yoga, which is an entire practice dedicated to the connective tissues around the hips and spine and it will change your life and fix your hips. You have probably had this your whole life and could have gone 30 more years without having a diagnosis, don't let anyone tell you the way that it's going to be when your older, or convince you to have surgery out of fear for the future. You have the ability to heal your own body and yin yoga will help you access your bodies own healing mechanisms to do just that. There is also a doctor in Utah that does an experimental procedure where he injects you with your own stem cells and it helped my mom with pain, but she's bone on bone. Take iynenger yoga and Baptiste Power Yoga and you will be cool.

If you think the best advice is a positive attitude, then you should read "You can heal your life" by Louise Hayes, she will teach you to heal your hip by changing your negative thinking patterns. Western Doctors only know how to do hip replacements, its all they know how to do....
