Hi Folks,

I have what you are all describing as well, and for the first time (yay stress...).

I have a third theory (after reading up on both Whitlow and Dyshidrosis, neither seem to fit the bill). Check it out (copied from Wikipedia):

"Athlete's foot causes scaling, flaking, and itching of the affected skin. Blisters and cracked skin may also occur, leading to exposed raw tissue, pain, swelling, and inflammation. Secondary bacterial infection can accompany the fungal infection, sometimes requiring a course of oral antibiotics [...] Some individuals may experience an allergic response to the fungus called an "id reaction" in which blisters or vesicles can appear in areas such as the hands, chest and arms. Treatment of the fungus usually results in resolution of the id reaction."

I'm going to explore this one. I'd be interested to know if this rings a bell for anyone.

Hope you all find resolutions.

I'm 36 year old male, and am being treated right now for strep throat. I thought it might just be a severe case. But this is exactly what I have. It was hard to describe, but when someone said it felt like a tiny sliver, that nailed it. I have several on both of my hands. When reading up on Whiltlow, I thought that's what it was, because right before I got strep, I was cleaning tonsil stones from my mouth, and they mention that people can get Herpatic Whiltlow from oral secretions. It's crazy that no one know exactly what it is.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience with these small bumps. After reading carefully everyone`s stories and doing my own research, it seems that these small but annoying red pinpoint discomforts meet the description of dyshidrotic eczema/pompholyx.

I got two bumps on the pads of my thumbs in recent days after a long time without (they seem to be very occasional), and I was wondering if this isn`t somehow connected to the use of my mousepad/trackpad on a new mac laptop that I purchased, as it`s in these exact places that my fingers are rubbing up against the metal surface (I do a lot of computer work).

Just a theory, but interestingly nickel, cobalt, and allergy to ingested metals are listed as one suspected triggers of these bumps. (other suspected triggers were stress, fungus, and contact allergies to the same metals). Apparently this is also a potential real cause of these bumps, ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed

i have the same problem.....  I went to a dermatologist and he told me I have eczema...... its a reaction of asthma, stress, handling a lot of paper and other things i cannot remember.  I don't have asthma, but in my case it was a reaction of handling a lot of paper becuase im a teacher and stressing too much.... he gave a cream so when i get those red spots..... instead of using lotion on my hands i use vaseline to keep my hands moistured all the time..... the red spots come out becuase your hands get very dry.....  try to keep them moistured because you will always get those red spots for ever and ever.

I also had these painful red bumps on my hand and after reading everyone's posts, I decided not to go to the Dr. because people said the cream they give doesn't do much but hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol does. I started doing that about 10 times a day and it did help dry them but I still had a few on the back of my middle finger that were not getting better so I went to the dermatologist today. I didn't want to go to the general practice Dr. because they always seem to guess and they often guess wrong! The second the dermatologist saw them he knew exactly what they were. They are shingles. Getting them on your hand is very rare. He said I was the first case he had seen this year. Look up pictures of shingles on the hand and see if that's what yours looks like. It was definitely mine! He said you can put all the topical stuff on you want and it won't make it go away because it is a virus and you need medication. He gave me Prednisone tablets and Valtrex. I just started them today. Stress is the main factor that brings this on. I was stressed when I started to get them and they continued to develop even after the stress subsided. This virus lives in everyone who has had Chicken Pox but not everyone will get shingles. If you do have them, go to the dermatologist! Don't delay!

I too have these red spots.  Mine appear on the palms of my hands AND feet.  I have actually had the same syptom in my knees??  The worst part about them is how they come on so fast and disappear just as quick.  Mine seem to go away in about 3-5 days but them may return in another location.  It is hard to get a physician to diagnose them because of this.  I have lived with it for about 25 years.  My biggest concern is the cause and is there an underlying condition that I should be aware of???

This is the third time I have read about this in connection with stress. I have never had this before until two days ago. It started with one finger and now it is all fingers and toes. Painful to open up a jar - anytime I put pressure on it. I am going through a divorce that I don't want and lately I haven't been dealing with it well.

Herpatic Whitlow is a herpes virus.  If you have ever had herpes or know anyone who has you would know that these are fluid filled blisters that erupt.  They do not sound anything like the small painful bumps with a red center being described in this forum.  I have the small red bumps too and am still looking for information on them.  I am certain they are not herpatic whitlow.

I have one right now on my thumb!! I did nothing peculiar then I just felt that my thumb was aching. Then I saw my thumb has a red dot in the middle. It looks like a splinter but it has a lump. I don't know what to do so I just nailed it (literally *usingfingernails*) then nothing came out but it became more painful. It looks like a splinter but it isn't because i can see that my skin doesn't have any holes or peelings. 3 hours later it got larger (that is now) what am i going to do? I'm a Grade 7 student btw
