Fighting cancer.

Someone said this at the Post Office today. He went up to the counter and asked the clerk, "how's it going?" and the clerk replied with "how are you today?" I knew it was going to be a long wait. :|
i'm a *bit* confused...

the customer said he was fighting cancer?

or are you marvelling at the automated reply where the customer/clerk have predisposed answers/questions that they blurt out without thinking, sometimes creating an ackward moment where no one wants to acknowledge the other persons mistake.

if it was fighting cancer, that's kinda harsh.

During all the tumbling traumas today a lady approached the counter who I recognized to be a 3 yr. member who never comes in. She is way over weight and has several health issues because of it. Half an hour later I haead everything from why her mother don't like her husband to the happenings of their first date. :argh:

i love getting people talking at my store. i find out all kinds of random c**p.
of course the idea is, (if i'm not busy with other folks) the longer i can keep them in the store, the more likely they are to find stuff.
and, all things being in balance, everynow and then i get a customer that clearly doesn't want anything and won't shut the hell up so i can help some of the people that actually need asistance.

I always wish I had the guts to give an answer like that.

That's not guts. That's looking for pity. Guts would say, "I'll eat your children if you give me any more of that lip."

So why do we ask, " how are you today" ?
Are we really interested or is it just another "Have a nice day" and thank your mother for the rabbits.
