Yes. I am having it done in a few weeks by Chief Colo/Rectal Surgeon in the largest teaching hospital in the Albany Area. Dr. Lee explained that the mesh is not the preferred way because it can cause adhesions and can actually work its way through the colon. Most women will need the surgery again. I've dealt with this for over 15 years. I am nervous also. But I'm sick of the pain and pushing to get the feces out.

anyone having surgery really needs to research the use of mesh....there has been plenty of controversy over it. i had a hysterectomy & bladder lift but chose to use my own tissue. however now post surgery i developed a rectocele...totaly bummer . but surgery i find, is not always the answer so i am going to try & deal successfully with this issue for now. Good luck to you all

I had this surgery done back in 2004. It was done through my tummy, as I had a high rectal prolapse. They cut out the prolapse, used the mesh to hold it all together and stapled the mesh to my spine. I was in hospital for 7 days and the pain was horrific. Also, when they put the staple through my spine, they caught a nerve and I have been left with neuropathic pain and have to take very high doses of opiates, which i hate. I was never told this, but expect to have some difficulty passing bowel movements after the operation, as the intenstine tube is made narrower during the op. Unfortunately, my bowel has prolapsed again, so I will further surgery in the near future.

BACKGROUND

I am seeking the advice from an urogynecologist.  My appointment is in a few weeks.  After having my secound child vaginally, I was not able to evacuate my bowels without sticking my finger in my vaginal area and pushing down on my rectum (sorry  TMI).  I was referred to gastro specialist by my primary doctior and for MANY months it was suggested for me to change my diet, drink more water.  I explained over and over again that I ate plenty of fruits and vegetables and drank large amouns of water.  Still they thought that it was unexplained constipation and was prescribed high cost prescriptions.  With copays and prescriptions I spent  well in to the upper hundreds out of pocket.  One day after having a bowel movement, I noticed after standing up that something near the opening of my vaginal area and sure enough I am now suspecting that I have a rectocele prolapse.

SUGGESTION

When it comes to surgical operations on imperative functioning areas, I strongly recommend finding the best of the best.  As long as your insurance covers it, find someone that specializes such as an urogynecologist.  These specialsit specialize in prolapses. I am traveling over an hour but I feel that I am worth it.  I want to live my life to the fullest and I am sure you all do as well.  Hire someone that can get the job done and do the job right "the first time"!

i have just been told by a general surgeon that he wants to do a hysterectomy for my vaginally bulging rectocele, he said that as im just 42 it can cause problems with intercourse if i have a repair, my own family doctor says that my uterus is in place & not moving or decending so its not causing the problem.

therefore, what good will it do to remove my uterus as i will still have a week vaginal wall & a big bulge in it.

Im so worried about going through all this to have the problem still there.

also, is this not better carried out by a gyneacologist?

thank you all

I had a complete hysterectomy a number of yrs. ago due to a prolapse. Now, last summer, I feel the same sensation as with the vaginal prolapse. Thinking that the sling broke, went to have it checked. Now it is a rectocele. My concern is, not the operation to tie it up too, but - what else will fall down later and have to be put back? Have you noticed anything like this happening?

My Dr. and Nurses have said all they could tell me for the regulation of my bowels. I feel they have left me lost in translation. Im very sad and unhappy,I started taking anti-depresents again.

I would like to say on this topic, that I wanted to try EVERYTHING before resorting to surgery.  I've been working with my acupuncturist and taking herbal pills.  I've been on this regimen for almost 3 weeks.  I have found that the bulge I felt originally is not as noticeable :-)   I feel it fall whenever I lift or pull too hard on any task, so I need to watch it.

Rectocele surgery can lead to painful sexual intercourse - it did for me but my surgeon did not think to tell me this risk. A 2012 study found 30% of women stopped sexual intercourse after this surgery because of painful scar tissue. It should only be done as a last resort..

I wholeheartedly agree with your views about this operation. I am determined to change this cavalier attitude of surgeons by taking this as far as I can. I too find sex painful following a rectocele repair. I am trying serrapeptase (a natural enzyme produced by silkworms to dissolve the cocoon) as it reportedly heals painful scar tissue, the cause of painful intercourse. I am also using penzim, the brand name of another natural enzyme which softens tissue. I have had some success, although not 100% but I have only been using them for 3 weeks. These enzymes are natural and no adverse reactions have been reported, only positive outcomes. I have been told that Kegek8 pelvic floor exerciser may have the peeing problem. I hope you feel better soon.

I had the rectocele surgery in 2000. I was 49 at that time. I did have a cath and packing after the surgery. I spent one night in the hospital. Once released I was given pain meds, Lidocaine spray for the sutures, ice pack, stool softeners and an order for a 6 week rest. I felt like I had birthed an elephant. The pain was very significant and I could not sit on my bottom for 4 weeks. Once I had recovered I was able to resume with sex and all was well. Currently, 2013, I am having the exact same problems. The doctor told me that it probably would last 12-15 years depending on my bowel habits. Because of chronic constipation I once again need surgery. I can't complain because it lasted 12 years. Good luck and unless you are super tough, plan on being on limited activity for 4-6 weeks. I had 3 vaginal births with my largest child being 91/2 pounds.
